But they were hard as rock, and at first I couldn’t understand why they were not rotting away, until I tried to move one... and discovered it was rooted into the ground, still alive.‎ This tree must have been cut down at least four hundred years ago, but it was not completely dead. It had no leaves, however—without leaves, a tree cannot absorb energy from the sunlight. Living cells must have food in the form of sugar, and they must breathe. Without food and air, the roots of the stump (树桩) ought to have died long ago. One possible explanation existed: The other beeches (山毛榉) around the stump had been pumping sugar into it for centuries to keep it alive, through their roots. Most individual trees of the same species growing together will be connected through their root systems. It appears that helping neighbours in times of need is the rule.‎ But the support they give each other is not random. Research by Professor Massimo Maffei at the University of Turin in north-western Italy suggests trees can distinguish the roots of their own species from other plants, and even pick out their own relations from other trees. Some are so tightly connected at the roots that they even die together, like a devoted married couple. Diseased or hungry individuals can be identified, supported and fed until they recover.‎ When the thick silver-grey trees in my forest behave like this, they remind me of a group of elephants like the elephants, they look after their own, helping the sick and the weak back onto their feet. And as those mossy wooden “stones” prove, they are even unwilling, like elephants, to abandon their dead.‎ It seems many tree species do this. I have observed oak, fir and spruce stumps as well as beeches that have survived long after the tree was cut down.‎ ‎24. How did the author feel when he discovered the tree was a live?‎ A. Touched B. Surprised C. Delighted D. Frightened ‎25. How can the stump stay alive for so long a time?‎ A. It can store enough nutrition.‎ B. Its roots are healthy and strong.‎ C. Its cells can produce a form of sugar.‎ D. It may receive support from its neighbors.‎ ‎26. What did Maffei find in his research?‎ A. Trees can help their relatives.‎ B. Trees can have really deep roots.‎ C Trees compete among themselves.‎ D. Trees communicate with other plants.‎ ‎27. In what sense are trees similar to elephants?‎ A. They are tall and strong.‎ B. They catch diseases and die.‎ C. They give assistance to each other.‎ D. They usually exist in a large group.‎ C Conformity involves changing your behavior to “fit in” or “go along” with the people around you. In some cases, this social influence might involve agreeing with or acting like the majority of people in a specific group, or involve behaving in a particular way to be viewed as “normal” by the group. Actually, conformity is something that happens regularly in our social world. Sometimes we’re aware of our behavior, but in many cases it happens without much thought or awareness on our parts. And even in some cases we go along with things we disagree with or behave in ways we know we shouldn’t.‎ There are countless examples of conformity in life. For instance, a teenager dresses in a certain style because he wants to fit in with the rest of the teenagers in his social group. A woman reads a book for her book club and really enjoys it. When she attends her book club meeting, the other members all dislike the book Rather than go against the group opinion, she simply agrees with the others that the book is terrible.‎ Why do we conform? In many cases, looking to the rest of the group for clues for how we should behave can actually be helpful. Others might have greater knowledge or experience than we do, so following their lead can actually, be instructive. And in some cases, we conform to the expectations of the group to avoid looking foolish. This tendency can become especially strong in situations where we aren’t quite sure how to act. Additionally, there are some situations where we conform just in order to avoid punishments or gain rewards.‎ There are many factors that influence conformity. For example, not knowing how to perform a difficult task makes people more likely to conform. Personal characteristics such as motivation to achieve and strong leadership abilities are linked with a decreased tendency to conform. And people are more likely to conform in situations that involve between three and five other people.‎ ‎28. What can we learn about conformity from the first paragraph?‎ A. Actually it is rare for us to conform.‎ B. Blind conformity should be criticized C. Sometimes people tend to conform unconsciously.‎ D. Conformity means changing your behavior reluctantly.‎ ‎29. Which of the following is a case of conformity?‎ A. Joining a certain organization.‎ B. Following the ongoing fashion.‎ C. Sharing something personal with others.‎ D. Giving up your creative ideas cautiously.‎ ‎30. When are we most likely to conform according to the text?‎ A. When we are at a loss.‎ B. When we are rejected.‎ C. When we feel threatened.‎ D. When we feel uncomfortable.‎ ‎31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?‎ A. Conformity cannot be avoided by anyone.‎ B. Conformity is linked to the size of the group.‎ C. Conformity is a natural response to challenges.‎ D. Conformity isn't related to individual differences.‎ D It is a bar that serves nothing but tap water. For free.‎ The concept was developed by two artists from Minneapolis‎, ‎Minnesota. Initially, they made their water bars in empty shops or other spaces across the country, a method for art exhibitions or performances called pop-up events. They’ve been such a hit that Coli Kloecker and Shanai Matteson are preparing to open a storefront (店面) Water Bar in northeast Minneapolis. Their taproom will serve pints of city water plus limited edition pours from other cities. Visitors will get to taste and compare, but the goal is bigger. They want to connect the public with scientists, environmentalists and activists who will serve as barmen.‎ ‎“It is really about opening up a conversation on the idea that ‘Water is all we have,’ because that’s all we’re serving,” Matteson said “And then the conversation from there.”‎ The storefront Water Bar is to open soon. The money it needs for operation will come from neighborhood associations, ongoing pop-up events and so on. A pop-up Water Bar at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville‎, ‎Arkansas, was part of contemporary art exhibition.‎ ‎“The best art comes from your everyday experiences and allows you to think creatively and critically about yourself and your place in the world around. And the Water Bar does that beautifully,” said Chad Alligood, who was in charge of the museum.‎ The pop-up events also have connected Kloecker and Matteson, who are married, to other water-minded organizations. The Crystal Bridges exhibition led to an invitation to the Great Lakes’ annual Taste of the Great Lakes event last June. There, they served Chicago city water from lake Michigan; tap water from Toledo, Ohio, which was dealing with a poisonous algae bloom (藻类爆发) in Lake Eric, and so on. There were always 15 to 20 people around the stand. Some drank the water but spat it out quickly. Some couldn’t tell the difference between samples (样品).‎ ‎32. What do Kloecker and Matteson aim to do?‎ A. To attract more visitors to Minneapolis.‎ B. To raise people’s awareness about water.‎ C. To get in touch with professional experts.‎ D. To open more water bars across the country.‎ ‎33. What is Alligood’s attitude towards the Water Bar?‎ A. Curious.‎ B. Admiring.‎ C. Doubtful.‎ D. Dissatisfied.‎ ‎34. What did people around the stand do?‎ A. They tasted and compared water.‎ B. They discussed the water shortage.‎ C. They collected water from the Great Lakes.‎ D. They introduced other organizations to the couple.‎ ‎35. What’s the best title for the text?‎ A. Popular pop-up events.‎ B. This bar is free for you.‎ C. Water-minded organizations.‎ D.
