B Running and walking are both excellent forms of exercise. Those who regularly do either usually have healthier hearts, stronger bones and lower body weights than those who do little exercise. But does it matter whether you spend time walking or running? Arguments can be made for both, and which is right for you depends on your goals and your present fitness level. “The key difference between running and walking is how many calories you are burning — not per mile, but per minute of exercise,” says Paul D. Thompson, a doctor at Hartford Hospital.” “Running is a more-efficient (高效的) movement and it’s more demanding on the body, so it burns more calories per minute,” Thompson says. “But if you’ve got the time to walk long enough to burn the same amount of calories, then walking is fine.” That said, if your final goal is to lose weight, chances are that neither running nor walking alone is going to do the trick. Research has shown that it needs to be done along with calorie control. In a recent study that analyzed data from nearly 50,000 people, researchers found that runners’ risk of heart disease was 4.5 percent lower than that of those who were inactive. But walkers who burned the same amount of calories daily had a risk level that was 9 percent lower than those who were inactive. “Running gets the reputation (名声) for causing injuries because many people who are just starting to run try to do too much too quickly,” says Carol Ewing Garber, a professor at Columbia University. “And they often get injured as a result.” If you want to progress from walking to running, do it slowly, gradually increasing your speed, distance and the frequency of your runs. 高一英语 第 6 页 共 11 页 Running may be more highly-intense (高强度的) and calorie-burning than walking, but walking is a great way to ease into exercise and make sure you are staying physically active every day. The bottom line is that getting exercise of any kind is beneficial — if you keep doing it. “The best exercise is the one you are going to do,” Thompson says. “There are extra benefits to be gained from running, but what’s most important from a public health point of view is that everyone gets out and does some kind of exercise.” 53. What can we infer from Paragraph 2? A. Exercise on its own is not enough to lose weight. B. Walking is better than running for busy people. C. Running can reduce people’s fat quickly and safely. D. Walking is more demanding on the body. 54. What can we learn from the recent study? A. Running burns fewer calories than walking. B. Walkers are more likely to get heart disease than runners. C. Walking can reduce the risk of having heart disease. D. Inactive people are free from heart problems. 55. Which of the following would Thompson most probably agree with? A. We’d better walk slowly. B. Just walk before you run. C. We’d better choose to run. D. Any exercise is better than none. C Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. That’s the finding of a new study. That memory impairment might be one side effect of the radiation (放射线) that phones use to keep us connected while we’re on the go. Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory. This type helps us remember abstract (抽象 的 ) symbols and shapes, explains Milena Foerster. The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Each time, they had one minute to remember 13 pairs of abstract shapes. Then they were shown one item from each pair and asked to match it with one of the five choices. The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory. That’s the ability to remember words. The two memory tests are part of an intelligence test. The researchers also surveyed the teens on how they use cell phones. And they got call records from phone companies. The researchers used those records to figure out how long the teens were using their phones. This allowed the researchers to work out how big a radiation exposure (接触) each person could have got while talking. A phone user’s exposure to the radiation can differ widely. Some teens talk on their phones more than others. People also hold their phones differently. If the phone is close to the ear, more radiation may enter the body, Foerster notes. Even the type of network signal that a phone uses can matter. Much of Switzerland was using an older “second-generation” type of cell phone networks, the study reports. Many phone carriers (通讯公司) have moved away from such networks. And 高一英语 第 7 页 共 11 页 more companies plan to update their networks within the next few years. The teens’ scores in the figural memory tests were roughly the same from one year to the next. But those who normally held their phones near the right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year. No group of teens showed big changes on the verbal memory test. Why might one type of memory be linked to cell phone use, but not another? Foerster thinks it could have to do with where different memory centers sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear. 56. The underlined word “impairment” in Paragraph 1 most probably means “________”. A. association B. damage C. pattern D. improvement 57. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is TRUE? A. The teens took two types of memory tests four times in total. B. The teens needed to report the average time spent on their phones. C. Researchers paid little attention to the teens’ habits of using phones. D. The teens’ ability of remembering words is shown in figural memory test. 58. What can we infer from Paragraph 3? A. How people hold their phones has no effect on their bodies. B. Phone users can make more money with new networks. C. The cell phone network type has little to do the cell phone use. D. Radiation levels are affected by the cell phone network types. 59. According to the study, teens who use their phones to their right ears a lot do worse in ________. A. matching numbers B. reading signals C. remembering shapes D. learning words 60. What might be the best title for the text? A. Cell phone use and safety warnings B. Facts about cell phone use at school C. Dangerous levels of cell phone use among teens D. Teen’s cell phone use linked to memory problems 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。 In American countryside, the message we hear is this: Go and get an education. Leave your small town and make something of yourself. 61 . Leave. Go. After graduating from a high school in Helena, Arkansas, I did go. I went to Colby College in Maine. I had visited the school ahead of time, so I knew what I was getting myself into. I knew about the difference in weather. 62 . But I wanted to challenge and get out of my comfort zone. And you know what? 63 . Only one thing took me by surprise — few students were from the countryside. Most of the other students at Colby were from big cities: New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco... And when I had 高一英语 第 8 页 共 11 页 conversations with these students — in or outside of class — we almost always focused on topics facing large American cities. In my education classes, it was always “urban this” and “urban that”. 64 . And this urban interest doesn’t just happen in college. I went to an education meeting a couple of years ago, and a professor, an expert in education, was there to give a speech. I was chosen to be part of a small group that got to meet with him. So there we were, five or six of us sitting in a room, and I asked him, “What are your thoughts on the state of education in the countryside?” And this man was speechless. I’ll never forget that moment. It speaks to a larger truth. Towns like mine are forgotten. More and more young people are heading for our big cities, leaving small towns and never coming back. But I don’t want to add to that movement. 65 . Now it’s my turn to help people younger than me. And you know what? I’m a sixth grade teacher in Helena now. A. I want to do the opposite. B. I understood the difference in social atmosphere. C. Get well prepared for your future. D. I did love my time there. E. Young people can’t go back to their towns. F. It was like small town America didn’t exist. G. Success and opportunity are found elsewhere. Good morning, everyone. Too many factors contribute to this serious situation, among which heavy homework is mainly to blame. Besides, what makes the situation from bad to worse is that nowadays students are exposed to too many electronic devices. Undoubtedly, nearsightedness has been a nationwide concern which calls for immediate action. Relevant authorities should push ahead with the reform of exam-oriented education system. Students should be encouraged to engage in more outdoor activities. Meanwhile, teenagers themselves should improve the awareness of protecting their eyes by keeping away from electronic devices.
