B When Dr Jane Goodall was a kid growing up in England, she dreamed of one day living among wild animals. That opportunity came when Goodall was 26 years old. Goodall moved to the African country and spent 25years there. What she learned about chimpanzees (黑猩猩) fascinated people all over the world. After studying animals for the first part of her career, Jane Goodall began working to protect not only chimpanzees, but all creatures. Her new book, “Hope for Animals and their World,” is a collection of conservation(保护) success stories. Time For Kids (TFK) talked to Goodall about her new book and her advice for young people. TFK: What inspired you to write a book about conservation success stories? Dr Goodall: There is so much doom and gloom about the environment. But because of all my travels, I meet these extraordinary people and hear about these amazing projects, and they really do give hope. They show that we can turn things around. TFK: Why are these stories important? Goodall: There are a lot of young people who are going out and wanting to save species, and they are so often told, “Give up. It’s hopeless.” And if we have that attitude, then soon there will be nothing left. TFK: How should kids who want to help get started? Goodall: Join Roots and Shoots. It gives them an opportunity to interact with other young people. The websites at www.rootsandshoots.org is a way for them to learn more. 24. Where did Goodall grow up? A. America B. France C. British D. Canada 25. In the interview, Dr Goodall was asked questions about __________. A. her career as a biologist B. the development of her research C. her new book and her advice to kids D. her recent trip to Africa 26. What does the underlined phrase “doom and gloom” probably mean? A. prediction B. excitement and passion C. achievement D. helplessness and fear 27. Dr Goodall wrote the conservation stories ___________. A. to give hope to people who want to save species B. to warn people of the danger of losing wild animals C. to instruct children on animal conservation D. to let people know about a website C A survey sponsored(赞助) by an international temporary service agency found that U.S. executives(行政部门) believe that people with a sense of humour do better at their jobs, compared with those who have little or no sense of humour. In fact, 96 percent of those surveyed said people with a sense of humour do better. The survey went on to point out that the results suggest that a sense of humour may help lighthearted employees keep their jobs during tough times. And, what's more, it may propel(推动) them up the corporate ladder past their humourless colleagues. Why? It seems that those with a sense of humour are better communicators and better team players. Studies have shown that happy workers are more productive. In fact, a researcher at California State University found that humour could help the employees to release tension. Consequently, they can concentrate on their work more efficiently. What’s more, employees who enjoy interacting with their co-workers aren't as likely to be distracted(分心), or absent from work. Research conducted by psychologist Dr Ashton Trice at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia showed that humour helps us think. If humour is really so important, then why don't we use it more often on the job? Most likely, the main reason is that many people are unaware of the positive effects of humour in the workplace. They tend to think humour and laughter are unproductive or unprofessional perhaps both. However, it is important to realize that some humour is inappropriate for the workplace, and that it is often used at wrong times. 28. Most people think a sense of humour can ________. A.help you to do your work better B.make you have a rich life C.make you pleased with your work D.help you to make more friends 29. Which one of the following can describe a person with a sense of homour? A. Serious. B. Funny. C. Friendly. D. Changeable 30. Many people don't use humour more often in the workplace because ________. A.they like keeping silent when working B.they don't like joking or laughing C.they think they should obey the rules D.they don't know the positive effects of humour 31. Which is probably the best title for the passage? A. People with a sense of humour. B.Humour is important in the workplace. C.Humour and humourless. D.Everyone likes humour. D Nowadays, the increase in the prices of agricultural products is one of the greatest concerns of the people and the government. The government has announced a series of policies(政策) to prevent the prices from rising further. Rising housing prices is still a big concern for the people, but since farm products are needed every day, the increase in their prices has made life very difficult for them. Many people may think the increase will help farmers. But have higher prices of farm products really benefited the farmers? Take the increase in vegetable prices in the first half of this year for example. Though natural disasters such as droughts and spring frost did not cause the prices of farm products to increase greatly—in fact, prices of some products did not increase at all—vegetables have become dearer by as much as 20 percent compared to that of last year. This means only a small part (or even none) of the extra money that city people have paid to buy farm products has gone to the farmers. The extra cost actually has gone to middlemen. As the fact shows, just increasing prices of farm products will have negative influence on the entire economy. On one hand, the price increase has created some abnormal phenomena, which hurts farmers’ interests. On the other hand, resources will enter the agriculture because of the high price of farm products, which would finally create negative effect on the whole economy. In such a case, it would be better to leave the market to decide the prices instead of raising farm products’ prices to protect the interests of farmers. Actually, such a way will be better for farmers in the long run. 32. What does the author mainly want to tell us by writing the passage? A.Farmers benefit a lot from the price increase. B.Price increase has not helped farmers. C.We should be sorry for farmers. D.Price increase has a bad effect on economy. 33. Many people think the increase in the prices of farm products benefits ______ . A. nobody B.the country C.middlemen D.farmers 34. The following statements are true EXCEPT ______ . A. the government has done something to prevent the prices from rising further B.it is better for farmers to leave the market to decide the prices in the long run C.natural disasters did not cause the prices of farm products to increase greatly D.rising housing prices has made life very difficult for people 35. What is probably the author’s attitude to raising the farm products’ prices? A.Negative. B.Indifferent.(漠不关心的) C.Enthusiastic. D.Positive. 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Make Friends 36 Indeed, there are many things in life which we alone cannot perform. We need friends’ help. Friends are people who willingly and readily help us when we are in trouble, and show sympathy for us when we are in misery. 37 For example, when we have passed the graduation examination and are looking for a job, we need experienced and reliable friends to guide us and help us on our way. A good friend is also an adviser, because our own points of view towards things may not be always right. 38 Of course, we can make friends everywhere. However, I think the best place is school, where we are among a big number of boys and girls our own age, so it is easy to get to know one another in a short time. 39 In order to make friends, we ourselves must be honest, noble-minded and kind-hearted whereby to leave a favorable impression on others since other people observe us the same way as we do. At the same time, we should avoid bad friends, because they always do harm to us and moreover, they are dangerous to the people around. What is even worse, they destroy our friendship with good friends. 40 A. Indeed, seeking acquaintance with bad friends would be a serious mistake B. A faithful friend is hard to find. C. Therefore, it is necessary for us to seek advice from friends. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed. E. Besides, we can also make friends among the people who work with us in the community. F. A proverb says “One man is not good enough to live alone in the world.” G. The benefits of friendship are boundless and sometimes invisible. Body language is the quiet, secret and most powerful language of all!
