Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention, and especially if it’s given from the heart. When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but receive them. Just take them in. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than understanding it. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let him know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, he knows we care. Many people with cancer can talk about the relief of having someone just listen. I have even learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the tissues(纸巾), until I realized that passing a person a tissue may be just another way to shut him down, to take him out of his experience of sadness and grief(悲痛,悲伤). Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there with them. The simple thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was very young. I thought people listened only because they were too timid to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the well-intentioned(出于好心的)words. 16. When we communicate with others we had better _________. A. listen more B. understand more C. speak more D. look here and there 17. It is very difficult for us to learn to listen because __________. A. we may know the answer. B. we have an interesting topic. C. parents teach us to speak. D. it goes against what we have been taught. 18. What is probably the best title for this article? A. Listening and talking B. Listen, just listen C. Listening is not easy to learn D. How to comfort others B Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog’s life, describes a person who has an unhappy life. Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog. Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things. Husbands and wives use doghouse when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at her husband for forgetting their wedding anniversary(周年纪念). She might tell him that he is in the doghouse and treats him badly. However, the husband may decide that it is best to leave things alone and not create more problems. He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie. Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs. 19. The underlined expression “work like a dog” in Paragraph 2 means __________. A. become successful B. have an unhappy life C. compete for the same things D. work very, very hard 20. If a man come home late, his wife might say angrily, “___________. ” A. It will rain cats and dogs. B. Every dog has its day. C. You lead a dog’s life. D. You are in the doghouse. 21. What does the text mainly talk about? A. Expressions in American culture B. Some expressions with the word dog C. A good way to learn English well D. Dog’s influence on American culture C More than 2,400 years ago, a sickness struck(侵袭)Athens. The disease is said to have killed up to one third of all Athenians, including their leader Pericles. The huge loss of life helped to change the balance of power between Athens and its enemy, Sparta, in the ancient world. Historians say the sickness began in what is now Ethiopia. They say it passed through Egypt and Libya before it entered Greece. Knowledge of the disease has come mainly from the writings of the ancient Greek historian Thucydides, who survived it. So what caused the fall of Athens? Now, a study based on genetic testing says it was probably typhoid(伤寒)fever. Greek researchers announced the results. Journal of Infectious Diseases published the findings online last week. Researchers from the University of Athens tested human remains from an ancient burial place in the Greek capital. The researchers collected genetic material from teeth. They say tests found genetic evidence similar to that of the modern-day Salmonella(沙门氏菌). Manolis Papagrigorakis led the University of Athens team. He says the findings throw light on one of the most debated mysteries in medical history. Typhoid fever is a life-threatening disease that is common today in developing countries. Experts say there are more than 21,000,000 cases each year. Typhoid can be spread(传播)by food or drink that has been touched by a person with the bacteria(细菌)that cause it. Bacteria in human waste can pollute water supplies. So water used for drinking or to wash food can also spread the infection. Hand washing is an important way to reduce the spread of typhoid. And there are vaccines(疫苗)that can help prevent it. Some people recover but continue to carry the bacteria. These carriers can get sick again. And they may continue to infect others. Doctors can do tests to make sure the bacteria has left the body. 22. The author mentions the fall of Athens in order to ________________. A. record the unknown history of Athens B. show the seriousness of typhoid C. tell the situation of the ancient war D. explain what type of disease typhoid is 23. What might be the right route of typhoid spreading? A. Egypt→Libya→Ethiopia→Greece B. Greece→Egypt→Libya→Ethiopia C. Ethiopia→Egypt→Libya→Greece D. Ethiopia→Greece→Egypt→Libya 24. How does typhoid spread? A. Through air B. Through soil C. Through skin contact D. Through water 25. We can infer from the text that __________ A. teeth can hold the largest amount of typhoid bacteria B. typhoid is now a common deadly disease in the world C. there are some solutions to preventing typhoid fever D. most of the typhoid patients won’t get sick once again 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to be a better reader Reading is an extremely important skill.
