Why is the man born as ‎ Samuel Clemens more widely known as Mark Twain? It has something to do with his love of the Mississippi River, and his time as a pilot of the Mississippi River, and his name as a pilot of the great steamboats."Mark Twain” was an old term used on the river. It meant that the water was two fathoms or twelve feet deep, which meant it was safe .‎ ‎ This term was first used as a personal name by Captain Isaiah Sellers, an old, knowledgeable man. He liked to send his advice and opinion to local newspapers, where he named himself Mark Twain. ‎ ‎ In 1861, Clemens wrote a very funny story about Sellers. The story was for Clemens' own, and other pilots' amusement. However, a man named Bart Bowen gave it to one of the New Orleans newspapers, Captain Sellers saw and read the piece, and was deeply hurt by it. He never published his opinion again, and Clemens felt bad about the part he had played in this. ‎ ‎ In 1863, Clemens was out west, in Carson City. He heard that Sellers had passed away. Then he decided to use the name, Mark Twain, for himself. Soon, Clemens became known as Mark Twain, on paper and in real life. ‎ ‎ In fact, he liked to be a steamboat pilot so much that he never considered any other profession. But in the Civil War, the use of all riverboats had to stop. Taking the boat back home on the Mississippi River was his last trip that had something to do with his life as a pilot.‎ ‎ 24. Sellers criticized Clemens in the newspaper. ‎ ‎27.What can we infer from the passage? ‎ ‎ A. Clemens was present when Sellers passed away.‎ ‎ B."Mark Twain" is still used as a term on the river today.‎ ‎ C. Mark Twain's last steamboat trip was in World War II.‎ D. Clemens preferred being a pilot to any other profession.‎ ‎ ‎ C ‎ On Tuesday I made a plan — I would drive down to the Great Smoky Mountains after work on Friday, sleep in my car and night hike (远 足) up Mt. Cammerer to photograph the sunrise.‎ About 5 p.m. Thursday night I got a message from my friend Mike that he was planning on heading to Pine Island Double Falls in Southern Kentucky, a place that I hadn't been to yet. He invited me along to join him on Friday afternoon. I said“Of course! Who needs sleep anyway?” ‎ Pine Island Double Falls is a special double waterfall. I ended up getting a pretty sweet photo of the falls before I continued on towards the Great Smoky Mountains.‎ I arrived at the Low Gap Trailhead at about 11 p.m. I decided that I was tired enough that continuing my original plan wasn't a good idea. So instead I went to sleep. ‎ I finally got up at about 5 a.m. and decided to go check out the Middle Prong Trail. This was an area I had never been to before and that I'd heard good things about. ‎ I threw my bag on my back and started slowly wandering my way down the trail (小路). Let me just say that this is one of my new favorite streams (小溪) of all time! Along the way, you may even be able to see signs of days past.‎ After wandering along the Middle Prong Trail for a while and taking a number of photos, I decided to go to the Cataloochee Valley to see if there would be any photo chances out that way. But then came a cloudless sky and strong sunlight. ‎ I decided at this point that I was going to go back to my car and just head home. This ended up being a pretty lucky decision, however. I came across a black bear right along the road! It was amazing to watch this bear slowly make its way off into the woods. ‎ ‎28. What did the author plan to do at first?‎ ‎ A. Camp on Mt. Cammerer. He found a beautiful stream.‎ ‎ C. He discovered signs of the past. D. He came across many waterfalls.‎ D ‎ ‎ UK physicist Isaac Newton once said, “Nature is pleased with simplicity and nature is no dummy (傻子).” Indeed, Mother Nature can provide almost everything human beings need if we follow her rules. But if we break the rules, she is likely to be cruel and ‎ lash out at us.‎ The outbreak of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (新型冠状病毒肺炎, NCP) in China and some other countries at the beginning of this year is an example. According to Xinhua News Agency, the new coronavirus is similar to a virus found in a bat in 2017 and probably has an intermediate host (中间宿主). It’s believed that the virus originated from the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, Hubei province, where live wild animals were sold.‎ The Wall Street Journal reported that Dr Peter Daszak, president of the US-based health organization EcoHealth Alliance, said, “This outbreak is a lesson for us. On a global scale (规模), human population density (密度), wildlife diversity, and land use change are what drive new pandemics (流行病).”‎ In ancient times, people needed to rely on nature to survive so they held it in awe (敬畏). For example, the American Indians believed that humans are a part of nature and nature is a part of humans. Chinese ancients always pursued the harmony between nature and human beings.‎ However, as human beings master more knowledge and make more advanced tools, people try to change and even conquer nature. They use more land to make buildings, genetically modify (改变) plants, capture some wild and rare animals to suit their own needs. In this process, humans gradually lose contact with nature and even throw it out of balance. For example, cutting a large number of forests means carbon dioxide must build up in the atmosphere and it contributes to global warming.‎ Although we don’t know for sure what first caused the NCP outbreak, Brian Lamacraft at Medium said it’s time for people to “reflect on our relationship with our planet” and “reconnect with this world and everything that we’ve been given”.  After all, according to US poet Gary Snyder, “Nature is not the place to visit. It’s our home.”‎ ‎32. What does the phrase “lash out at” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. punish   B. control C. test   D. challenge ‎33. What lesson did Daszak think human beings should learn from the NCP outbreak? A. Bats are one of the most dangerous wild animals. B. It’s impossible to prevent new pandemics globally. C. We should stop the wildlife trade around the world. D. Humans should live peacefully with nature.‎ ‎34. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5? A. How human beings become their own masters. B. How human activities cause global warming. C. How human beings break the balance of nature. D. How humans use technology to improve their lives.‎ ‎35. What is the author’s purpose in writing this article? A. To reflect on the NCP outbreak. B. To explain what led to the NCP outbreak. C. To describe experts’ predictions on new pandemics. D. To compare ancient and modern attitudes toward nature.‎ 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Scheduling Time with Yourself ‎ Many of us are so busy with work, school and home life that often there is no time left over to do something that you enjoy. At 12, she left home and worked as a housekeeper until she married Thomas Moses at 27. ⑱They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York. ⑲Grandma Moses began to paint using oils in her old age because she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market, and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought everything she painted. Three of those pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, ⑳and in 1940, she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930s and her death, she produced some 1,600 pictures.‎ ‎ ‎
