Then, she did hard work on large farms.‎ Although she could not read or write, Tubman learned from her parents to do what was right. Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap(包装).‎ On September 11, 1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying."I promised you a gift, and here it is." What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it.I told it stories. I told it over and over how much I loved it!‎ One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as "hopeless", "pitiful", and "dying", which sounded ominous.‎ Christmas was coming. "Don’t expect any presents this year." Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. "If your baby brother lives, that'll be Christmas enough." As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. I'd never seen him cry before.‎ The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say. "What? He's all right?" He hung up and shouted upstairs. "The hospital said we can bring Richard home!" "Thank God." I heard Mum cry.‎ From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My sacks still hung there flat. But in the earthquake capitals of the world-Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey-rats will soon be man's new best friends.‎ What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can't get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.‎ How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.‎ Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots' noses don't work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!‎ The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn't get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).‎ 12. In the world earthquake capitals, rats will become man's best friends because they can ________.‎ A. take the place of man's rescue jobs B. find the position of people alive who are trapped in buildings C. serve as food for people alive who are trapped in buildings D. get into small spaces ‎13. From the third paragraph we know the rescuers can judge a person who is alive by ________.‎ A. the noise made by the rat B. the rat's unusual behaviour C. the signal sent by the radio on the rat's back D. the smell given off by the person ‎14. In doing rescue jobs, ________.‎ A. rats smell better than dogs B. dogs don't need to be trained to smell people C. robots' sense of smell can be affected by other smells around D. rats can see in the dark and are bigger than dogs ‎15. Rats have all the following advantages except that ________.‎ A. they are more fantastic than other animals B. they are less expensive to train than dogs C. they don't need electricity D. they are small and can get into small places 第一节 ‎(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to keep a travel journal Are you looking for fresh travel journal writing ideas? Read on these tips to get some ideas for creating a journal you will cherish.‎ Just do it. A travel journal is not scholarly (学文精深的). 16 There are no rules, and no one is grading what you write. The best way to get going is to get started.‎ Pay attention. Your journal doesn’t have to only be about where you go each day. 17 Did you meet someone new? Where and when? What did you talk about? Recording observations will make your travel journal colorful.‎ Try to write something every day. Make a habit of writing something every day or at least every other day. 18 If you let more time pass, it can be different to remember what you did three or four days ago, especially the brief impressions of those experiences. Your journal will be richer if you keep up with it.‎ ‎ 19 If writing paragraphs doesn’t fit either you or your trip, try something else. You can make lists, such as your favorite restaurants for dinner or the best places to watch the sunset. Try sketching(素描)too and don’t be discouraged if you are not sure as an artist. Sometimes sketching is really the best way to record an experience that would be lost when described with text. As the saying goes, a picture is worth one thousand words.‎ Take the bad along with the good. For all the great travel experiences we enjoy, there are days when things go wrong. 20 Though they are not highlights(亮点) of a trip, they are part of your unique travel story and often are as much fun to tell about in the future as the ones that go as planned.‎ A. Write at a comfortable place.‎ B. Use different ways to keep a journal.‎ C. Be sure that the size of the notebook is right for you.‎ D. Then you can catch your thoughts while they are fresh.‎ E.
