‎ 第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分26分)‎ 第一节(共8小题;每小题2分,满分16分)‎ A Although Kobe Bryant is no longer with us, his unbreakable will on and off the basketball court lives on. This month, it was announced that the late superstar would be inducted(入选) into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, a prestigious (有威望的) honor for basketball’s best. Alongside Bryant, eight others will be inducted at a ceremony on Aug 29.‎ ‎“His fierce competitiveness, work ethic and drive were unmatched,” Jeanie Buss, owner of the Los Angles Lakes, told ESPN. “Those qualities helped Bryant lead us to five titles — and have now brought him to the Hall of Fame, where he will be enshrined (铭记) with the greatest to have ever played the game. No one deserves it more.”‎ Indeed, what elevated (提升地位) Bryant above his peers was his un-matchable commitment to be the best. He was ruthless (冷酷的) in his pursuit to dominate (超越) his opponents. He called it the “mamba mentality (曼巴精神)” after the black mamba, one of the world’s deadliest snakes—and also after the top killer from the 2003 movie Kill Bill, according to The New Yorker.‎ The mamba mentality became so popular that Bryant detailed his process in his book The Mamba Mentality: How I Play. In it he revealed his famously detailed approach as well as his physical and mental preparation to not just succeed at the game, but to excel.‎ ‎“Mamba mentality is all about focusing on the process and trusting in the hard work when it matters most,” he wrote in the book. “It’s the ultimate mantra (准则) for the competitive spirit. It started just as a hashtag (标签) that came to me one day, and it’s grown into something athletes — and even non-athletes —embrace (欣然采纳) as a mindset.” Bryant took after one of basketball’s ‎ most legendary players, Michael Jordan, not only with regard to Jordan’s playing style, but his competitive nature.‎ ‎“I liked challenging people and making the uncomfortable,” Bryant wrote in an excerpt published on the Players’ Tribune. “That’s what leads to introspection (内省) and that’s what leads to improvement. You could say I dared people to be their best selves.”‎ Though many were shocked and sad when the Los Angles great died in a helicopter crash in January, all signs point to Bryant’s legacy (遗产) persisting for generations to come. Whether you’re a basketball player or not, you can’t deny the Kobe’s power to inspire you to be your best self.‎ l. What does Jeanie Buss think of Kobe Bryant?‎ A. It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument.‎ British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s; they noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become static and the winds would drop.‎ But why is it often so calm before a storm?‎ Science has given us the answer. According to US infotainment (资讯娱乐) website How Stuff works, a calm period occurs because many storms, such as tornadoes and hurricanes, draw in all the warm and humid air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”.‎ Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air descends (下降), it becomes warm and dry. Warm, dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm.‎ This same process also causes the “eye of the storm” in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong rotating (旋转的) winds.‎ The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First, count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder. Roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about 3 kilometers away. A ‎ good gauge (评估) is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.‎ However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms are preceded by calm.‎ Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and chilling (寒冷的) winds.‎ So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That’s the most reliable and sensible (合理的) way to predict the next display of nature’s temper (脾气).‎ ‎5.The underlined word “static” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ______.‎ A. violent B. quiet C. fast-changing D. warm ‎6. What is the main idea of Paragraphs 4 and 5?‎ A. To explain how a storm comes into being.‎ B. To support previous research on storm clouds.‎ C. To explain why a peaceful period occurs before a storm.‎ D. To show how dangerous a storm can be in certain situations.‎ ‎7. If there are 15 seconds between a flash of lightning and a thunder clap, how far away is the storm ?‎ A. Three kilometers.‎ B. Four kilometers.‎ C. Five kilometers.‎ D. Six kilometers.‎ ‎8. What can we learn from the last paragraph?‎ A. It is not always quiet before a storm.‎ B. Storms have a big influence on life.‎ C. Heavy storms don’t usually last for a long time.‎ D. Weather reports may fail to predict a storm.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ What is Britpop? 9.______ You can often recognize a Britpop song as soon as you hear it.
