Like most English children, I learned French at school. I had often been to France, so I was used to speaking a foreign language to people who didn’t understand French. But when I went to America, I was really looking forward to having a nice and easy holiday without any language problems. How wrong I was! The misunderstandings began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to give my American friend Daisy a call and tell her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking lost and asked if he could help me. "Yes, "I said, "I want to give my friend a ring. " "Well, that's nice, "he said. "Are you getting married? But aren't you a bit young?" "Who is talking about marriage?" I replied. "I only want to give my friend a ring to tell her I've arrived. Can you tell me where a phone box is ?" "Oh! "he said. "There's a phone downstairs. " When at last we met, Daisy explained the misunderstanding to me. "Don't worry, "she said to me. "I had so many difficulties at first. There are lots of words which the Americans use differently in meaning from the British. You' ll soon get used to all the funny things they say. Most of the time, British and American people understand each other!" 24.Where was the writer from?‎ A. France. B. England. C. America. D. China.‎ ‎25.The writer thought ________in ‎ America. Bigger animals usually live longer than smaller animals.‎ The main reason people used to think big animals live longer is because of something called metabolic rates(代谢率). A metabolic rate is like how much petrol a car uses -- cars that use up their petrol more slowly can drive for longer, a bit like animals with lower metabolic rates. Smaller animals usually have higher metabolic rates, which lead to shorter life spans.‎ The problem is that this doesn't work for all animals. Some parrots have high metabolic rates but can live for more than 80 years! A metabolic rate is related to heart rate, and some parrots have a heart rate of 600 beats per minute. And dogs are one of the animals that do not follow this rule. A 70kg dog is lucky to reach seven years, but a 4kg one can live for 10 years or more. We still don’t really know why this happens.‎ People now think it might depend on the "evolutionary pressures(进化压力)" that each animal faces. An evolutionary pressure includes things like other animals that want to kill smaller ones for food. Because they are so big, large animals like elephants and whales are less likely to be attacked in the wild than small animals like mice.‎ There is a lot of scientific research on why dogs age and how to help them live ‎ longer. This is partly because we love dogs, and partly because learning about them can help us figure out how humans can live longer too. Dogs suffer from the same kinds of problems that people do as they get older, including getting fat and having painful joints. Maybe one day in the future our dogs will live as long as we do.‎ ‎28. How is Paragraph 2 developed?‎ A. By showing experiment results B. By making a comparison C. By giving figures D. By explaining cause and effect ‎29. What do the underlined words “this rule” in Paragraph 3 refer to?‎ ‎ A. A larger dog hunts for its food more easily B. A larger dog is luckier than a smaller one C. Some animals have high metabolic rates ‎ D. The lifespan of animals is mostly related to their size ‎30. What can be the best title for the text?‎ ‎ A. How can we help dogs live longer?‎ ‎ B. Why don’t dogs live as long as humans?‎ ‎ C. How is animals’ life span usually related to body size?‎ D. Why are large animals less likely to be attacked?‎ 第二节:(共5个小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ It is hard to transit (过渡) from middle school to high school, but it’s even worse when you don’t have some friends to help you get through it. What if most of your middle school friends are in different high schools? 31 Making new friends feels hard. Here are a few tips for you.‎ ‎32 High schools are filled with clubs that welcome new members. Even if you’re not 100 percent sure about joining, take part in a meeting or two. You may want to keep on going just because people there are so friendly! You can join more than one organization — not only will you meet more people, but you’ll also learn more about your own interests.‎ Play a sport. 33 Thankfully, there are plenty of high school teams that play for fun instead of competition. Many high schools have badminton, flag football, or softball teams that are open to everyone. Plus, playing a game together gives ‎ you something to talk about.‎ ‎34It sounds so simple, but it is such an important part of making friends! People want to be with positive and friendly partners. Not only will being friendly make others feel more comfortable with you, but it can also increase your confidence.‎ Learn to ask questions. 35 If you ask questions, you can give them opportunities to talk about themselves. Simple questions before the bell rings, in the lunchroom, or in gym class give you a great opportunity to get to know someone. Ask someone if they’re also new in school, what other classes they're taking, or what they think of the class you’re in together so far.‎ A. Be nice to others.‎ B. Join a club or group.‎ C.
