A This happened when I was ten. We were having Halloween Day at school, and I wanted to be a pirate (海盗) because of a movie I had seen. My girl cousin, who was a year younger than me, had decided to be a boy for Halloween, so my aunt called my room to borrow some of my clothes. The next morning they came to our house early before school. She came running to me and told me that she was going to be a boy for Halloween. I told her that I didn’t care, and then she told me that I was going to be a girl. I told her she was crazy, but she said that she had overheard our mothers talking and that her mom had brought some of her clothes for me. As soon as I walked into the living room, I knew she wasn’t lying. There was a wig (假发) on the coffee table, and my mom and aunt were both smiling at me. I shook my head and told them NO WAY before they even said a word. My mom said to me, “Don’t be a baby, Dave. It was a great costume idea and you would look cute dressed as a little girl.” My aunt said that it would be really adorable, since my cousin was going to be dressed as a boy. I told them I wouldn’t do it! I was still refusing when my aunt was putting makeup on me, and I was wearing a pink party dress, the blonde wig with pigtails, ankle socks and Mary Jane shoes. My cousin wore one of my sweatshirts, a pair of my jeans, a baseball cap and my sneakers. We were sent to school like that, where I spent a depressing day. My cousin loved it, but I’d never been so embarrassed. I still don’t like Halloween to this day! 1.When Dave’s girl cousin came running to him, she was sure ________. The statue would celebrate its century of independence. To ship it, the statue was broken down into 350 pieces. And now, spread across Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbour, it sat in 214 wooden packing boxes. The problem was that New York had no money to reassemble it. Six other cities, less affected by the recent economic decline, had the money and bid to build it. But a Hungarian immigrant, Joseph Pulitzer, the owner of America’s biggest newspaper called the World, wouldn’t let “Liberty” go. When he heard that the Statue of Liberty was about to die from lack of funds, he saw his chance. Pulitzer set the fundraising goal of the World at $100,000. In its pages he laughed at the rich, thus increasing the paper’s appeal among workingclass people, and firmly planted the idea that the statue was a monument not just for New York City but, indeed, for all of America. Perhaps Pulitzer’s cleverest trick was the promise to publish the name of every single contributor in the pages of the World, no matter how small the contribution. The editorial that opened the fundraising campaign set its tone. He wrote: “The World is the people’s paper and it now appeals to the people to come forward and raise the money for the statue’s base.” The statue, he said, was paid for by “the masses of the French people. Let us respond in like manner.” The circulation of the World increased by almost 50,000 copies. African American newspapers joined in the effort, encouraging their readers to contribute to a monument that would, in part, celebrate the end of slavery. So the money poured in, as singledollar donations from grandmothers and pennies from the piggybanks of schoolchildren. On August 11, 1885, the front page of the World announced,“ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS!” The goal had been reached, even slightly beyond, thanks to more than 120,000 contributions. 4.What does the underlined word “reassemble” (Para. 1) probably mean? The old animal spent her days out in the open country eating sweet grass. When the cow heard Sylvie’s voice calling her, she would hide among the bushes, unwilling to go home. This evening it had taken Sylvie longer than usual to find her cow. The child hurried the cow through the dark forest, following a narrow path that led to her grandmother’s home. “Hello, little girl,” a young man called out cheerfully. “I’ve been hunting for birds, but I’ve lost my way.” The young man explained he was a scientist, who searched for birds. “Do you put them in a cage?” Sylvie asked. “No,” he answered, “I shoot them and deal with them with special chemicals to preserve them.” “I saw a white heron (苍鹭) not far from here two days ago. It’s a very rare bird. Have you seen it, too?” he asked Sylvie. Sylvie’s heart began to beat fast. She knew that strange white bird! The young man was staring at Sylvie. “I would give $10 to the person who showed me where the white heron is.” Sylvie had a plan that she would get the $10 for her grandmother and make the young man happy. Her plan was to climb to the top of a tall pine tree to see where the white heron had hidden its nest. The pine tree seemed to grow taller, the higher that Sylvie climbed. Suddenly a bird with broad white wings flew past Sylvie and landed on a pine branch below her. The white heron sat on its nest in a nearby tree. Sylvie gave a long sigh. She knew the wild bird’s secret now. Slowly she began her dangerous trip down the ancient pine tree. About an hour later Sylvie returned. Both her grandmother and the young man stood up as she came into the kitchen. The splendid moment to speak about her secret had come. But Sylvie was silent. The trip was for 2 weeks during the March break from school. This trip was probably about 20 years ago so it was before the time of things like portable video games and being able to watch movies in the back seat. So to pass the many hours of travel my brother and I had to entertain ourselves and each other. My mum would set the back seat up so that it was our own little playroom. She would pack everything up so that we had a big level area to play in. We would play cards and board games. When it got to the point where we_were_at_each_other’s_throats we would be sent back to our own side of the seat and would be forced to either nap or read by ourselves until we could be friendly to each other again. I can remember us playing for quite some time when we turned the back seat into a spaceship and traveled around the earth. Another time we turned it into a kitchen and had a bakeoff But the thing that I remember the most and that gave us many hours of enjoyment was using each other’ s faces as silly Plasticine (普莱斯蒂辛橡皮泥) and making funny faces. We would see how far we could stretch each other’s mouths open, see how thin we could make the other’s eye by pulling on it. We would keep going until one of us begged for mercy because we had to give our faces a rest. So while I can remember us having a great time on the beach, laughing a lot trying to put the tent up in the rain, what I remember the most of that trip and what always makes me smile the most is remembering the pain that our faces would be in after the trip. 12.What did the author do when traveling to Myrtle Beach? D.We were about to fall asleep. 下文的“... until we could be friendly to each other again”说明画线部分的意思应为“互相打斗,激烈争吵”。 14.What impressed the author most during the trip? A.Playing cards and board games. B.Pulling each other’s faces and eyes. C.Having a cooking competition.
