The snowboarding champion, who grew up in California, competed there at 17 years of age. She became the youngest woman ever to win an Olympic gold medal in the halfpipe competition.‎ She has recently won a halfpipe competition during the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado. But the 18yearold snowboarder has decided to trade some trips down the halfpipe for an Ivy League education after the world championship competition in Utah. Beginning in the next fall, Kim will be joining Princeton University's class. Instead of centering on the physics of her winning snowboard moves, she could now be learning the subject in school. In a recent interview, Kim said, “While I have a special identity and my life has always been so different, I still aim to make my higher education experience as normal as possible.” Kim added, “I'd love to be Chloe, the girl who sits next to me in the English class.”‎ Kim received widespread attention during the Peyongchang Olympics. Her publicity was fueled by her friendly, energetic nature as well as her interesting family story. Along her path to Olympic gold, Kim also became a social media star. She helped design a snowboarding Barbie doll in her likeness, rapped with hiphop artist GEazy and joined other sports stars to be honored with ESPY Awards While all of these are fun, Kim says she now looks forward to a new challenge - earning a degree from one of America's top universities. She says she considers her acceptance to Princeton just as much of an honor as earning an Olympic gold medal.‎ She is still considering that her exact field of study will be at Princeton. Ronald Reagan famously joked that “it's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?” Beyond_a_certain_level,_extra_effort_seems_to_be_selfdefeating. Studies suggest - 9 -‎ ‎ that, after around 50 hours a week, employee productivity declines sharply.‎ But that doesn't stop some managers from demanding that workers stay chained to their desk for long periods. Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, the Chinese ecommerce group, recently praised the 996 model, where employees work from 9 a.m. to 9. p.m., six days a week, as a “great opportunity”. Yet presenteeism is the curse of the modern office worker.‎ There will be days when you do not have much to do; perhaps because you are waiting for someone else in a different department, or a different company, to respond to a request. As the clock ticks past 5 p.m., there may be no purpose in staying at your desk. But you can see your bosses hard at work and, more importantly, they can see you. So you make an effort to look busy.‎ The consequence is often wasted effort. Rather than work hard, you slave to make bosses think that you are. But presenteeism has more serious consequences. As well as reduced productivity, this can mean greater medical expenses for the employer. According to a study in the Journal of Occupation and Environmental Medicine, these costs can be six times higher for employers than the costs of absenteeism among workers.‎ None of this is to say that employers are not called to expect workers to be in the office for a proper period of time. Surely there will be a need for some (preferably short) meetings. Dealing with colleagues facetoface creates a feeling of togetherness, allows for a useful exchange of ideas and enables workers to have a better sense of their mutual needs.‎ Turning an office into a prison, with inmates (囚犯) allowed home for the evenings, does nothing for creativity that is increasingly demanded of office workers as routine tasks are automated. To be productive you need presence of mind, not just being present in the flesh.‎ ‎8.Why does the author mention Ronald Reagan's joke in Para. 1?‎ A.To encourage people to grasp the chance to work hard.‎ B.To show that hard work is harmless.‎ C.To introduce the topic of the passage.‎ D.To praise Ronald Reagan's joking skills.‎ ‎9.What is the meaning of the underlined sentence?‎ A.Extra effort causes problems or difficulties.‎ B.With extra effort, we can defeat anybody.‎ - 9 -‎ C.We should say no to extra effort.‎ D.Extra effort isn't necessarily helpful.‎ ‎10.According to the passage, which of the following situation is helpful to the company?‎ A.Your team has a tenminute meeting after work for an urgent problem.‎ B.You don't go home until 7:30 p.m. because your boss is in his office and he can see you.‎ C.The manager tours the engineering department at 7:30 p.m. to check people are at their desks.‎ D.You attend the office even when you suffer lower back pain.‎ ‎11.Which of the following opinions agrees with the passage?‎ A.Some managers expect workers tie themselves up with a chain to their desks.‎ B.Reduced productivity can mean greater medical expenses for the employer.‎ C.With growing demand of creativity on office workers, a prisonlike office is not a wise option.‎ D.Presence of mind guarantees your productivity.‎ Ⅱ.阅读七选五 ‎[2018·全国卷Ⅱ]If you are already making the time to exercise, it is good indeed! With such busy lives, it can be hard to try and find the time to work out. __1__ Working out in the morning provides additional benefits beyond being physically fit.‎ ‎●Your productivity is improved. Exercising makes you more awake and ready to handle whatever is ahead of you for the day. __2__‎ ‎●Your metabolism(新陈代谢) gets a head start. __3__ If you work out in the mornings, then you will be getting the calorie (卡路里) burning benefits for the whole day, not in your sleep.‎ ‎●__4__ Studies found that people who woke up early for exercise slept better than those who exercised in the evening. Exercise energizes you, so it is more difficult to relax and have a peaceful sleep when you are very excited.‎ ‎●__5__ If you work out bright and early in the morning, you will be more likely to stick to healthy food choices throughout the day. Who would want to ruin their good workout by eating junk food? You will want to continue to focus on positive choices.‎ - 9 -‎ There are a lot of benefits to working out, especially in the mornings. Set your alarm clock an hour early and push yourself to work out!You will feel energized all day long.‎ A.You will stick to your diet.‎ B.Your quality of sleep improves.‎ C.You prefer healthy food to fast food.‎ D.There is no reason you should exercise in the morning.‎ E.You can keep your head clear for 4—10 hours after exercise.‎ F.After you exercise, you continue to burn calories throughout the day.‎ G.If you are planning to do exercise regularly, or you're doing it now, then listen up!‎ 课后提能练(三十三)‎ Ⅰ. Find Thrills at a Theme Park部分中的“Experience thrill rides and attractions at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom...” 故选A项。 根据Cruise on the Bay部分中的“For people who like the thrill of speed and wind in their hair...” Ride a Bike Over the Golden Gate Bridge部分中的“... with an allday bike rental from Blazing Saddles. Their light bikes, combined with their new, free mobile app...” 根据第三段中的“Her publicity was fueled by her friendly, energetic nature as well as her interesting family story.” 故选A项。 根据第二段中的“While I have a special identity and my life has always been so different, I still aim to make my higher education experience as normal as possible.” 文章第一段介绍了克洛伊·金是奥运冠军以及她的成功经历;第二段中的“But the 18yearold snowboarder has decided to trade some trips down the halfpipe for an Ivy League education...” Turning an office into a prison, with inmates (囚犯) allowed home for the evenings, does nothing for creativity that is increasingly demanded of office workers as routine tasks are automated.‎ 分析:本句的主语是动名词短语Turning an office into a prison, with inmates - 9 -‎ ‎ (囚犯) allowed home for the evenings为with复合结构作状语;定语从句that is increasingly demanded of office workers修饰creativity;as routine tasks are automated为as引导的原因状语从句。 根据倒数第二段中的“Surely there will be a need for some (preferably short) meetings”可知,开会(最好是短会)对公司是有必要的,故选A。 “more awake”与E项中的“clear”照应。‎ ‎3.F 由此空后的“getting... for the whole day”与F项中的“burn calories throughout the day”一致可知,答案为F项“在你运动之后,你一整天都在持续消耗卡路里”。 ‎ ‎5.A 根据本段中的“healthy food”“junk food”与选项A中的diet可知,此空应选A项“你会坚持你的饮食(习惯)”。‎ - 9 -‎ - 9 -‎
