He was wearing only his swimming glasses, cap and speedos!‎ Pugh is an advocate for our oceans and seas, working to protect these ecosystem with their large diversity of marine life. When asked why he doesn’t wear a wetsuit, Lewis says, “I ask world leaders to do everything they can to protect our oceans. Sometimes the steps they need to take are difficult and unpopular. If I’m asking them to be courageous, I must also be. Swimming in a wetsuit would not send the right message.”‎ It took Pugh about 19 minutes to complete the one-kilometer swim in Antarctica where the water averaged about 1.6 degrees Celsius . He says that his body can only tolerate about 20 minutes in the freezing waters before it starts shutting down. As he swims, his body temperature steadily drops, which in turn causes his muscle control to drop, slowing him down. When he is done with his swim, his support team rushes him to a hot shower and it takes almost an hour for his body temperature to return to normal.‎ Doctors and Pugh caution that one must receive months of training to swim in such cold waters. Even expert swimmers who are unused to freezing water can drown within minutes because of the physical shock experienced by the body. Pugh says he trained for six months before this swim.‎ This is not the first time that Lewis has swum in dangerous conditions. In 2007, he swam one kilometer in the North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change. In 2015, he swam in the Bay of Whales in Antarctica’s Ross Sea as part of his successful campaign to help set up a marine reserve there.‎ ‎4.Why did Lewis Pugh swim without a wetsuit?‎ A. How to survive a swim in cold waters C. How to prepare for extreme swimming D. Lewis Pugh: achieving the impossible C If you ever visit an English village, make sure to look out for morris dancing. Undoubtedly one of the strangest traditions of English culture, morris dancing is a form of folk dancing that dates back to the 15th century. If you ever get the opportunity, you really have to see it.‎ Men and women wearing old-fashioned, shabby clothing dance in the streets of towns and villages across the country during the holiday periods. Women wear long, frilly (有褶皱边的) skirts and men wear short trousers with bells attached to them. They dance to traditional folk music which is often played on traditional musical instruments.‎ Some groups carry heavy black sticks which they beat against each other while they dance. Other groups wave handkerchiefs in the air while they perform. The dances are usually performed near a pub so that when it’s over, the dancers and audience can sing some traditional folk songs over a pint of beer. The celebrations will often continue long into the night, by which point most people are too drunk to think about performing again.‎ Morris dancing is a great English tradition but it’s facing a big crisis (危机). As the years go by, fewer and fewer young people are joining morris dancing groups. The dancers are getting older and older and eventually, if nothing is done to change this trends, the tradition will die out within the next few decades.‎ If you’ve ever had the fortune to see morris dancing, you may understand why teenagers aren’t rushing to sign up. Putting it to the point, it’s not exactly the coolest thing for an 18-year-old to be doing. Why dress up in bells and funny costumes when you could be going clubbing, playing sport, or doing anything else?‎ ‎ However, it would be a great shame to lose such a fun and lively part of England’s history and culture. It’s important to look after some traditions and customs especially when it’s something as harmless and happy as morris dancing. ‎ ‎8.What is the passage mainly about?‎ ‎ A. The history of morris dancing. ‎ ‎ B. The popularity of morris dancing.‎ ‎ C. The protection of morris dancing. ‎ ‎ D. The introduction of morris dancing.‎ ‎9. What do we know about morris dancers?‎ ‎ A. They dance in pubs late into the night. ‎ ‎ B. Some perform with sticks or handkerchiefs. ‎ ‎ C. Men wear long dresses with bells attached. ‎ ‎ D. They sing folk songs while they dance.‎ ‎10. What is the present situation of morris dancing?‎ ‎ A. It is losing appeal among young people.‎ ‎ B. It is carefully looked after.‎ ‎ C. It keeps pace with people’s demand.‎ ‎ D. It is witnessing great changes in history.‎ ‎11. What does the author think about morris dancing?‎ ‎ A. It helps to stay healthy. B. It is not fun for seniors.‎ ‎ C. It should be given more attention. D. It is fashionable among teenagers.‎ D A smartphone program is helping scientists learn about changes taking place in nature. More than 100,000 citizen-scientists around the world are taking pictures of many kinds of plants and animals using a program called iNaturalist. The program gives researchers much information about where plants and animals live, and how a growing human population is changing plant and animal life.‎ In Arlington, Virginia, naturalists are making a record of the plants and animals that live in the heavily populated area.‎ Alonso Abugattas is the local government’s natural resources manager. He works to protect and improve Arlington’s natural spaces. The group is using the iNaturalist smartphone program to record its observations. Then iNaturalist users throughout the world can look at the images and try to help recognize them. The program records where and when the picture was taken. This lets experts like Abugattas and others create maps that show where plants and animals are living, and how that changes because of development and climate change. That is important in Arlington and around the world.‎ Scott Loarie is co-director of iNaturalist. He said species are dying at a faster speed than ever, and the mix of life on Earth is threatened. “And we’ve only begun to understand exactly how those ecosystems contribute to our food system, or human health—all these things that we depend on.”‎ Loarie says iNaturalist lets citizen-scientists help professional (专业的) scientists gather data of the wild plants and animals in the world. More than 100,000 iNaturalist observers on all seven continents have made more than four-and-a-half million observations. The information has been used in studies of other animals.‎ Alonso Abugattas says the group in Arlington recorded more than 450 kinds of animals and plants. “If you just open up your eyes to the natural world, you’d be amazed at what’s out there.”‎ ‎12.Which of the following is the function of the iNaturalist smartphone program?‎ A. Creating maps to show climate change.‎ B. Reminding experts to make out the photos.‎ C. Marking the time and places of the photos.‎ D. Writing down the names of species in the photos.‎ ‎13.What did Scott Loarie want to tell us?‎ A. The goal of iNaturalist.‎ B. The regret for dying species.‎ C. The importance of scientists.‎ D. The value of species to humans.‎ ‎14.What do we know about the iNaturalist smartphone program?‎ A. It calls on people in the world to change nature.‎ B. It directly helps professional scientists to gather data.‎ C. It gets wildlife information and data from all over the world.‎ D. It lets professional scientists pay attention to humans’ behaviors.‎ ‎15.What can be the best title for the text?‎ A. Two Heads Are Better Than One B. A Cheap Way to Study Plants and Animals C. Measures Are Being Taken to Protect Plants and Animals D. It is such a significant project that we can’t wait to embrace it. We can practice our low carbon life from our daily lives. First, everyone is expected to cultivate their awareness of saving energy. Activities of different forms may help a lot, such as “No Car Day”, “Trees-planting Day” and “Walking-on Week”. Meanwhile, going upstairs instead of taking a lift or going to school on foot instead of by car will bring us more fun of keeping fit and reduce more power consumption. Thirdly, stop “white pollution” to use recyclable bags rather than plastic bags. Moreover, encourage more people around to put saving idea in mind, bettering their behaviors from turning off lights, taps and using less paper.‎ Maybe one’s act seems tiny, but all people’s efforts really make a difference. Lower carbon, less pollution and a greener planet! Hope you can join our global Low-carbon project to make our world a better place to live in. Look forward to your reply and participation.‎
