It was a dull drill they'd performed hundreds of times before.‎ ‎    She is that gymnast who competes wearing glasses. She is so petite (娇小) that she looks tiny standing next to other gymnasts.‎ ‎    "No one is born perfect," Hurd says. "You will have imperfections. I hope more people see me and try to do sports or gymnastics with glasses. Nothing should stop you from doing something you are passionate about."‎ ‎    Hurd was 11 months old when her mom, Sherri, adopted her from Wenzhou, China, and brought her to Middletown. When Morgan was 3, Sherri began signing her up for various sports—gymnastics, soccer, T-ball, dance. Because of her size, most sports were tough. But at ‎ gymnastics class, being tiny and flexible was a gift. By the fifth grade, her talent had outgrown her classes, so Sherri brought her to First State.‎ ‎    "She stood out from the start," Glazounov says. "She exhibited that desire. She loves to impress and she wanted it always. No one ever had to tell her to work hard."‎ ‎    A single mom, Sherri worked as a dental hygienist for 30 years until retiring and taking a job for Discover Bank that allowed her to work from home, support her daughter's home-schooling and help her daughter's gymnastics career.‎ ‎    "Who would have known when I went to get that little girl in China what was going to happen," Sherri says. Why are poorer people less likely to spend money on their own learning and ability development, but more likely to be addicted to television and video games?‎ ‎    In the past, a poor person was normally considered to have bad virtue or have no ambition. The Nobel Prize winner Banerjee corrects such views and explains the truth behind the poor. Poor people tend to live with more worries in their lives, he said, so they need tools such as televisions,‎ ‎ cell phones, junk food and video games to get rid of worries more than others. But learning something often takes a lot of time and money to get rewards, while the poor are often impatient due to economic (经济的) reasons, and their life in the meantime is getting more boring.‎ Banerjee's research has found that the poor often need to borrow short-term loans (贷款) Thus, the poor tend to take higher financial risks --- they often have unstable incomes and are unable to get money to start a business from banks, so they rely more on these high-interest loans. And these small loans put a brake on their savings against risks.‎ ‎    How could the poor step into the middle class? Maybe starting a business is a way out. But for the extremely poor, it's impossible to get help from banks to start a business. In most cases, a more practical option is getting a job in government agencies because comparatively speaking, government jobs are very stable, which give the poor the opportunities to be hired for the long term, to increase the "bandwidth (带宽) " of their thinking, and thus making it possible for families to move from poverty to the middle class.‎ ‎    What's the role of government then? When the market can't solve a problem, the government will solve it. And the problem behind the poor is actually the failure of the market. The poor often lack the necessary information to make the right choices and they often carry too much responsibility for their survival to make the best choices. In this sense, Banerjee's research provides a new perspective for governments to understand poverty, so that policies can be tailored(专门制作) to reduce poverty and eventually remove it.‎ ‎28. What do the poor need to improve their ability according to Banerjee? ‎ A. Ambition. B. Money. C. Guidance. D. Patience.‎ ‎29. What will probably cause the poor to face financial risks? ‎ A. The high-interest loans. B. Their small incomes. C. The financial policies. D. Their educational backgrounds.‎ ‎30. What may be a right choice for the poor to get out of poverty? ‎ A. Setting a high goal. B. Working as civil servants. C. Opening their mind. D. Seeking support from banks.‎ ‎31. What can the government do to get rid of poverty? ‎ A. Adjust the policy. B. Control the market. C. Do more research. D. Offer enough information.‎ D ‎    A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women's shoes.‎ ‎    Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids(液体)from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.‎ ‎    A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy's, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company's co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women's feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers(纤维). Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe's outer part, called the sole (鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber(橡胶).‎ ‎    Rothy's shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. "We're not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future." When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled materials to make other products.‎ ‎    For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.‎ ‎32. How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with? ‎ A.They are buried or burned. B.They are used to make shoes. You've been studying hard for your midterm, but when you walk into your exam, your mind goes blank, your heart races fast, you get sweaty palms and find it hard to breathe. 36________‎ ‎    Everyone feels stressed during exams. Usually, it results from a fear of failure, lack of adequate preparation time and bad experiences taking tests in the past. This is normal and often helps you work harder, think faster and generally improve your performance.37 ________You may also feel that other people are managing the exam better than you. This can cause you to feel that your mind has "gone blank" on information you know you have revised.‎ ‎    38________ Some choose to ignore the problem, while others don't review because they think they will do badly anyway and even miss exams due to the anxiety. It can also be really easy to think that if you don't try and then you fail, you won't feel as bad as if you fail after trying really hard.‎ ‎    So what can you do to fight against the negative mindset and stay calm before and during your test?39_______ Yes, this seems obvious, but it's worth repeating. If you feel confident that you've prepared thoroughly, you'll feel more confident walking into the test. The second tip is simple: just start. The blank page can maximize your anxiety. 40.________ You can always go back and change things later if needed, but a few quick answers can get the ball rolling. Besides, allocating(分配) your time is equally important. Look through the whole test before getting started.‎ ‎ Mentally allocate how much time you'll spend on each section. If there's time to recheck, even better.‎ A. The first thing you should do is to be prepared.‎ B. People often deal with exam stress in many unhelpful ways.‎ C. If these classic signs of exam anxiety sound familiar, you're not alone!‎ D. Therefore, people need an appropriate amount of pressure to help deal with exams.‎ E. Realizing time is almost up and that there's still a lot of blank space will make you desperate.‎ F. However, if you are overly anxious about the result, you may be unable to focus on your work.‎ G. After you get the paper, dive right in by getting some questions done to build up your confidence.‎ 三、完形填空(每题1分,共15分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中找出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 ‎ ‎    My daughter, now 20, is studying to be an opera singer. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn't mind paying for it. After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn't even able to meet his daily needs.‎ ‎    They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make even one time's meal so he needed anything he could earn.‎ ‎    The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn't deliver their stuff.‎ ‎    The wife started to get angry at her husband, "I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him."‎ ‎    They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart!
