She wished that he was as easy to please as her mother, who was always delighted with perfume.‎ Besides, shopping at this time of the year was a most disagreeable experience: people trod (踩) on your toes, poked (捅) you with their elbows and almost knocked you over in their haste to get to a bargain ahead of you.‎ Partly to have a rest, Edith paused in front of a counter where some attractive ties were on display. “They are real silk,” the assistant assured her, trying to tempt her. “Worth double the price.” But Edith knew from past experience that her choice of ties hardly ever pleased her father.‎ She moved on reluctantly and then quite by chance, stopped where a small crowd of men had gathered round a counter. She found some good quality pipes on sale—and the prices were very reasonable. Edith did not hesitate for long: although her father only smoked a pipe occasionally, she knew that this was a present which was bound to please him.‎ When she got home, with her small well-chosen present concealed in her handbag, her parents were already at the supper table. Her mother was in an especially cheerful mood, “Your father has at last decided to stop smoking.” She informed her daughter.‎ ‎24. Why was shopping very disagreeable at that time of the year?‎ A. Because customers were doing their shopping in a great hurry.‎ B. Because customers often poked each other with their elbows.‎ C. Because customers often knocked each other.‎ D. Because some customers trod on others’ toe.‎ ‎25. What do we know about Edith’s father?‎ A. He did not like presents.‎ B. He never got presents.‎ C. He preferred ties.‎ D. It was difficult to choose a present for him.‎ ‎26. How did Edith come to the next counter?‎ A. Purposely. B. Happily. C. Accidentally. D. Unwillingly.‎ ‎27. How do you think Edith would feel when she heard her mother’s words?‎ A. Glad. B. Disappointed. C. Annoyed. D. Joyful.‎ C Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.‎ Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. A previous research found positive results on the use of them. But it mainly concentrates on studies with learners who had signed up for language courses and these apps worked as an after-class support, so the results were not always reliable. A recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out to find out if users can actually learn a language with an app.‎ Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers special models where some contents are available for free while some contents are not, we find that its users are an even mix of men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level as there is a decrease in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad. Females tend to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users.‎ Getting any feedback on Busuu depends on whether your answer is correct or not. While it is helpful, this is not the sort of feedback language teachers prefer, as it does not explain why the answer is right or wrong. In spite of this, feedback in the app is very highly rated.‎ More than 92% of the people state that the app has met their expectations and 86% consider the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.‎ Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance anxiety that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.‎ ‎28. Why weren’t the results of the former research always dependable?‎ A. Because it used out-of-date methods.‎ B. Because it just focused on positive results.‎ C. Because it was only carried out before class.‎ D. Because it only considered users of a limited type.‎ ‎29. What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text?‎ A. All the contents are free to use. B. It’s used by more advanced learners.‎ C. Most users consider it satisfying. D. It’s more popular with female learners.‎ ‎30. Which of the following can probably replace the underlined word address?‎ A. Deal with. B. Write down. C. Turn to. D. Speak of.‎ ‎31. What is the main idea of the text?‎ A. Students won’t suffer anxiety in learning languages by using Busuu.‎ B. Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners.‎ C. Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers.‎ D. Students should be required to use apps for homework after class.‎ D Doing well in high school prepares students for life in college and beyond, so achieving student success is important. High school students learn valuable information from class lectures and homework, and by asking for help when it is needed. Being prepared for tests and engaging in school activities can help a student to achieve success in high school.‎ Complete any homework you are assigned on time. Then, if you need help to understand a concept you will have plenty of time to get help.‎ Create a study area in your home. This can be a quiet bench outside or a seating area in your room. If you like to listen to music while studying, listen to classical or light music. Be sure to have plenty of lighting in the area to read your textbook or notes.‎ Keep a schedule. If you have extra-curricular activities like sports or school meetings, make sure to schedule your homework and study time around them. Keeping a schedule will allow you to get better grades while having fun in high school.‎ Eat breakfast. Having breakfast each morning before school will give you energy and brain function to pay better attention in class. Eat snacks during study sessions to keep alert(警惕的) and focused on your work.‎ Create a study group to help fellow high school students and get help if you need it. Studying with others will help reinforce concepts and information, and if you need help there will always be someone to help you before you get behind in your studies.‎ Set up after-school hours with your teacher if you need extra tutoring. Visiting a teacher for one-on-one time before a test will help you nail down those last few concepts you need help with.‎ ‎32. My mom orders everyone around like a general, and my dad always manages to ‎ make a mess of something. ‎ M: That sounds great. ‎ W: Yes. It’s one of the few times in the week when we can relax together. ‎ M: We don’t do much like that as a family, but I do like helping my dad fix things around the house. He’s really good at that kind of thing and I’m always learning new things. ‎ Text 9‎ W: Excuse me, Jason. Do you know any hotels in Boston? The boss is sending me there. And I have to find a place to stay. ‎ M: I know three. There’s the Midtown, the Boston Bay, and the Fairfield. ‎ W: What are the locations like? I’ll be downtown most of the time. ‎ M: The Midtown has the best location, then. ‎ W: I’ve read about the Boston Bay. It’s also the newest hotel in Boston, isn’t it?‎ M: Yeah, I think so. It’s the biggest, and it has a very good restaurant. But, I think it’s the most expensive hotel in Boston. ‎ W: I have to keep my expenses down. What about the Midtown?‎ M: The Midtown is cheaper than the Boston Bay, but it doesn’t have a restaurant. I have a hotel guidebook here some place. Why not have a look at it carefully yourself?‎ W: Oh, thank you. ‎ Text 10‎ M: Have you traveled on any of the new giant airplanes? If you have not been a passenger on one of these planes, try to imagine a jet which is more than seventy meters long and more than five stories high at the tail. Such a plane costs at least twenty-five million dollars to build. It costs at least $6,000 to fill this giant with fuel. ‎ Inside, the giant jet looks more like a great theater than a plane. It has six kitchens, and they are all needed when the plane is full of passengers. The jet holds 400 passengers. Imagine that number in one jet plane! There are twice as many engines as the jet needs. If two engines fail on the same side, the plane can easily use its other engines to land. There are also two mechanical pilots to take charge if the human pilots cannot fly the planes.‎
