Realisation will probably set in seconds after you’ve clicked “send”. You freeze in horror and burn with shame. What to do? Here are four common email accidents, and how to recover. Clicking “send” too soon Don’t waste your time trying to find out if the receiver has read it yet. Write another email as swiftly as you can and send it with a brief explaining that this is the correct version and the previous version should be ignored. Writing the wrong name The sooner you notice, the better. Respond quickly and briefly, apologizing for your mistake. Keep the tone measured: don’t handle it too lightly, as people can be offended, especially if your error suggests a misunderstanding of their culture(i.e. incorrect ordering of Chinese names). Clicking “reply all” unintentionally You accidentally reveal(透露)to the entire company what menu choices you would prefer at the staff Christmas dinner, or what holiday you’d like to take. In this instance, the best solution is to send a quick, light-hearted apology to explain your awkwardness. But it can quickly rise to something worse, when everyone starts hitting “reply all” to join in a long and unpleasant conversation. In this instance, step away from your keyboard to allow everyone to calm down. Sending an offensive message to its subject The most awkward email mistake is usually committed in anger. You write an unkind message about someone, intending to send it to a friend, but accidentally send it to the person you’re discussing. In that case, ask to speak in person as soon as possible and say sorry. Explain your frustrations calmly and sensibly—see it as an opportunity to clear up any difficulties you may have with this person. 21. After realising an email accident, you are likely to feel _______. A. curious B. funny C. tired D. awful 22. What should you do when an unpleasant conversation is started by your “reply all” email? A. Avoid further involvement. B. Try offering other choices. C. Meet other staff members. D. Make a light-hearted apology. 23. What is the passage mainly about? A. Defining email errors. B. Handling email accidents. C. Reducing email mistakes. D. Improving email writing. B Some people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them .Take my family’s last vacation .It was my six-year-old son’s winter break from school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. I have written a couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in. I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money’s worth. I’m also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn't hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its shape longer, and it's the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts. 24. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks (群)so large that they darkened the sky for hours. It was calculated that when its population reached its highest point , there were more than three billion passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati. Sadly, the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands, Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants. By the closing decades of the 19th century ,the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by American’s need for wood, which scattered (驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again. In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons , but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time , a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on September 1, 1914. 28. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons____. A. were the biggest bird in the world B. were the largest bird population in the US C. did great harm to the natural environment D. lived mainly in the south of America 29. The underlined word “ undoing” probably refers to the pigeons’ ____. A. evolution B. liberation C. ruin D. escape 30. What was the main reason for people to kill passenger pigeons? A. To make money. B. To save other birds. C. To seek pleasure. D. To protect crops. 31. What can we infer about the law passed in Michigan? A. It was strict. B. It was ignored by the public. C. It was unfair. D. It was declared too late. D We always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, than another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse (配偶) gets his or her act together, when we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nice vocation and when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time than right now. If not now, when? Our life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway. One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said," For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin a real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that you have. And remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school; until you get married; until you get divorced; until you have kids; until you retire; until you get a new car or home; until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy... Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don't need money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like no one's watching. 32. Which is the best title for the passage? A. Happiness is a Journey B. Be Brave to Face the Challenges in Our Life C. Life Will be Better D. Don't Wait 33. Why do we always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, than another? A. Because no one will be happy until he gets married. B. Because only if we get to a destination can we lead a happy life. C. Because we don't realize treasuring every moment means happiness. D. Because happy life is always in the future. 34. By reading Alfred Souza's words, we know _______. A. he realized that there is no way to happiness B. his life was always filled with too many obstacles for him to face C. he had to face more obstacles than anyone else D. the obstacles in life helped him to see what happiness is 35. What does the writer want to tell us? A. A thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as one deed, so do not talk, just do it. B. Time and tide waits for no man, so treasure every moment. C. So said, so done, so do what you said. D. Will is power, so do what you want to do. 第二节 (共5小题,每小题3分,满分15分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Stay in a Good Mood It's typical to feel your mood starting to become bad.
