Steve and Debbie got married in 2001 and had two children,Lily and Alex. Unfortunately,Steve and Debbie’s marriage didn’t work out and they got divorced in 2006.The children live with Debbie. In 2008,Debbie remarried. Her new husband,Martin, has three children from his previous marriage and they visit Debbie,Martin,Lily and Alex at weekends. In addition,Debbie is pregnant with her third child. She’s expecting a boy who will be a halfbrother to Lily and Alex and also to Martin’s three other children. Confused?Debbie’s family arrangements might have seemed strange 30 years ago but nowadays this kind of “reconstituted” family is increasingly common in the UK. Almost half of all marriages in Britain end in divorce and over 40% of marriages are remarriages. More than 10% of all British children live with one birth parent and a stepparent—a parent who isn’t their biological mother or father. The traditional “nuclear” family of two parents and their children is not so traditional any more. What does all of this mean for parents in these “reconstituted” families?“There are difficulties and challenges,” says Debbie.“Different families have different routines and it can be difficult for children to move between their two families. Birthdays and holidays can be tricky. Where do the children go?Who should they spend their time with? Also, when my children are naughty it can be difficult for Martin to tell them off. Things that might be simple in a traditional family can be a bit more complicated.” And how about the children?Martin’s eldest child,Ella,is 12.“I like my two families,” she says.“I live with my mum but visit my dad quite often and I’m happy that my mum and dad get along OK. They’re not married any more but it’s good that they can still be friends.” Of course divorce and separation are never easy but many families in the UK are finding ways to make family life work in new ways. 21.Why did Steve and Debbie get separated? A.They couldn’t support the children. B.They couldn’t get along well. C.They were both out of work. D.They had serious economic problems. 22.We can learn from the text that a “nuclear” family ________. A.has two birth parents and their children B.has two birth parents and only one child C.is traditional but complicated D.doesn’t have any children 23.What do the underlined words “tell them off” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean? A.make them annoyed B.send them to school C.let out their secrets D.talk angrily to them 24.What’s the text mainly about? A.The difference between “marriage” and “remarriage”. B.More and more people get divorced in the UK. C.“Reconstituted” families are becoming more and more in the UK. D.The marriage situation is becoming severe. B For my grandmother’s 70th birthday,my family and I visited South Korea. While there,I was attentive to Korean high schools and students. I was surprised by how different Korea’s public high schools are from America’s. Korean high schools can be allgirls allboys or coed (男女同校的) unlike our standard coed high schools. There are three grades:“go 1(10th)”,“go 2(11th)” and “go 3(12th)”.“Go” is the first syllable of the word “godeunghakkyo”,which, simply translated,is “high school”. In America, unless you want to go to a private school, you don’t have to take an entrance exam. In Korea, however, students must take a test to get in because of the many choices of schools. Another difference I couldn’t help but notice was the students’ appearance. With very few exceptions, all wear uniforms. A name tag (标牌) with the student’s name, grade and homeroom number must also be worn. Girl’s skirts can’t be above the upper part of the knee, and it is forbidden to dye(染) your hair or wear accessories (装饰品) except small earrings. There are strict regulations for appearance to achieve neatness, and it seems the only freedom students have is with their choices of hair style, socks and shoes. The final difference was the setup of the classes. There may be 40 students in a classroom, but the number can be less or even more, depending on the population of the town or city. Although there are many students per classroom, they are very close, which I think is a result of not changing classrooms for different subjects. There are no levels in the subjects and the teachers are the ones who switch classrooms. They just have tenminute breaks between subjects. In each class, students are ranked by their grades. This causes strict competition, and Korean students do a lot of studying. To help them, all schools have extra study classes after school. One other fact that helped me appreciate living in America is that Koreans have school on Saturdays. Although it’s only a half day,I think I speak for most Americans when I say we could never imagine ourselves in school on a Saturday. Korea’s public high schools are clearly different from America’s. I had imagined them to be just like our schools, but now I have a clear picture of how different they are. 25.How many main differences are mentioned between Korea’s public high school and America’s? A.3. B.4. C.5. D.6. 26.It seems that the writer________. A.is familiar with the education system of high schools in Korea B.is fond of Korean students’ appearance C.prefers the high school life of America to the one of Korea D.feels it common to have lessons on weekends 27.According to the rules, the students of Korea can________. A.go to different high schools without exams B.wear any clothes except uniforms at school C.attend different classes as they like D.have different hair styles C Does stress cause gray hair? Many people believe that tension and stress can cause your hair to lose its color. In fact,it is an old wives’ tale that being upset all the time can result in premature graying. Here is a closer look at this situation and why some believe that this old wives’ tale could be true. As one ages, the hairs on the head also age. In fact, just about everything on the human body begins to show signs of wear and tear after a while. The joints wear and become stiff and skin wears and becomes wrinkled. Hairs on the head grow and eventually die. They are replaced, but in the process something else happens. When new hairs are replaced, the color or pigment (色素) is also added to them. However,as one ages, this pigment becomes less and less available. At first, hairs will have a limited amount of pigment and they will appear to be grayish in color. In time, they will lose all of their pigment and will be white. Many things are known to cause graying, and genetics is a very powerful factor. If one of your parents turns gray at an early age, there is a good chance that you will too. Some people begin the graying process in high school, while others may be over the age of forty. Constant worry and tension can have many harmful effects on the human body. It is a known fact that stressful times can cause one to suffer hair loss. It would make sense that if it can cause these problems, perhaps it also may contribute to graying. However, there is no sound evidence to support this. On the other hand, many medical professionals believe that there may be a link between graying and a constant state of anxiety or tension. Does stress cause gray hair? There is no scientific evidence to support the theory, but it is best to avoid stressful situations. 28.The underlined phrase in the first paragraph most probably means________. A.clever remarks B.silly remarks C.exciting remarks D.disappointed remarks 29.The second paragraph mainly tells us________. A.every part of body is replaced with age B.hairs will grow weak but not die C.skin becomes wrinkled with age D.every part of body ages with age 30.What might play the most important role in the graying process? A.Genetics and the amount of sleeping time. B.The amount of food people eat and living environment. C.The amount of pigment and genetics. D.Genetics and the amount of water people drink 31.According to the passage, continuous pressure may result in________. A.a person’s fatness B.a person’s fitness C.a person’s weight loss D.a person’s hair loss 32.From the passage we can infer that________. A.stress causing gray hair is still in question B.gray hair has nothing to do with tension C.stressful situations can be of benefit D.sound evidence has been found D Deputy (副职) Head Teacher Wanted Position:Deputy head teacher Employer:Bracknell Forest Council Published:10∶00 A.M.Mon.Dec.12, 2011 Closing date:10∶00 A.M.Mon.Jan.16, 2012 Working pattern:Fulltime Salary:£20,000-£34,999 per year Location:Jennett’s Park Primary School,Bracknell,Berkshire The governors are seeking to employ an enthusiastic deputy head teacher to be a key partner in founding and leading our brandnew primary school in Bracknell. A six-year study found reading aloud to children every day puts them almost a year ahead of children who do not receive daily read-alouds. ___36___ Using texts above the children’s levels gives them the chance to hear high-level vocabulary and absorb complex language structures. Reading aloud below their levels also allows them to relax and enjoy beloved texts. Encourage close reading from the youngest age. ___37___ Use picture book illustrations to strike up deeper questions and conversations. Ask questions you don’t know the answers to so that children will be able to answer in ways that reflect their own ideas. ___38___ Entering the world of stories and knowledge should feel like an exciting discovery process. Create visual ways to track the journey. From a reading minute tracker to a “words we learned” or “our big ideas” chart, we can use these visuals to pause for “hip hiphooray (欢呼)” moments. Honor each child’s unique identity. Children become great readers by finding connections as they read. ___39___ “I notice you like books where animals are the main characters.” “I notice you like books where girls are strong characters.” Even the youngest child will begin to recognize that each person’s reading choices matter. ___40___ A child who sees reading as a lifelong, constant companion is more likely to have a lifetime of success.
