Perspiration, indeed, plays a very important role in Chinese scientist Tu Youyou’s success.‎ Tu was given the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015 for discovering a new drug for malaria, a deadly disease caused by the bite of some types of mosquito. She is the first Chinese citizen to win a Nobel Prize in Science. “It is the pride of the whole Chinese science community, which will inspire more Chinese scientists,” China Daily noted.‎ Malaria is a disease that infects around 200 million people and kills about half a million people each year, according to the Economist. Tu’s discovery has saved millions of lives, especially in the developing world. According to the World Health Organization, by 2013 malaria deaths had fallen by 47 percent compared with 2000.‎ But the road to this achievement was a tough one to travel. In the late 1960s, during the “cultural revolution” (1966-1976), Tu joined a government project on which she began research on a new malaria drug.‎ In the beginning, Tu read a lot of old folk remedies(药方), searched texts that were hundreds or thousands of years old and traveled to remote places.Over several months, Tu and her team collected over 600 plants and created a list of almost 380 possible remedies.‎ ‎“This was the most challenging stage of the project,” Tu told The Beijing News. “It was a very labor-demanding and dull job, in particular when you faced one failure after another.”‎ But the hard work and the dullness failed to break the team’s spirit. In the following months, she and her team tested the remedies on malaria- infected mice and they found that an extract(‎ 提取物)from the plant qinghao seemed to work well.‎ Not that the work was easier after that. The fact that the extract didn’t always work against malaria discouraged some of her teammates. But Tu was ambitious to make a contribution to the world and so she encouraged her teammates to keep going. They decided to start again from the beginning.‎ In 1971, they were rewarded for their efforts. After nearly 200 failures, Tu finally made an extract that was 100 percent effective against malaria parasites. The extract was called “Artemisin in”(青蒿素).‎ Thanks to decades of hard work, Tu and her team had “provided humankind with powerful new means to combat these diseases that affect hundreds of millions of people every year,” said the Nobel Prize Committee. “It has greatly improved human health and reduced suffering.”‎ ‎32. What can we learn from the passage?‎ A. Tu Youyou is the first Chinese citizen to win a Nobel Prize.‎ B. Compared with 2000, malaria deaths had fallen to 53% in 2013.‎ C. The work became easier after Tu found an extract from qinghao.‎ D. Artemisin in is the most effective extract to kill malaria parasites.‎ ‎33. What does the underlined word “combat” mean in the last paragraph?‎ A. Fight. B. Treat. C. Spot. D. Anticipate.‎ ‎34. How many stages did Tu and her team go through to get Artemisin in?‎ A. Seven. B. Six C. Five. D. Four.‎ ‎35. What is the best title of the passage?‎ A. Discovering Qinghao B. Sending out a Lifeline C. Perspiration and Inspiration D. The Secrets to Tu Youyou’s Success 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Moving into a new home in a new neighborhood is an exciting experience. Online classes pose a challenge for both our teachers and us students.‎ Mr Gao, our 50-year-old maths teacher, has struggled to learn how to livestream his classes. He told us he would go through his lessons several times before livestreaming. While teaching online, Mr Gao accidentally turned on a beauty camera feature, which amused us greatly and won numerous likes from us.‎ Mr Gao deserves our respect and admiration as he’s doing his best to learn new teaching skills. From him, we’ve learned the true meaning of “it’s never too late to learn”.    ‎ 听力原文: ‎ Text 1‎ M: Our flight takes off at midnight. When do you think we should be at the airport?‎ W: For international travel, you’re supposed to be at the airport two hours early in order to give yourself enough time to check your bags and get through security check.‎ Text 2‎ W: What are you doing?‎ M: I’m designing a dress. I entered a contest and the winning designer gets a trip to Paris.‎ W: Wow! This looks amazing. I love the length of the dress, and the color. I think you’re going to do well in the contest!‎ Text 3‎ M: This cereal(谷物) has way too much sugar! What did you put on it?‎ W: It has nuts and dried fruit already, but I added a bit of honey. You always say the cereal I buy isn’t sweet enough.‎ Text 4‎ M: I’d love to go to the Super Bowl(美国橄榄球超级杯大赛) next week, but I don’t think there are any more tickets.‎ W: Why don’t you talk to Laura? She might be able to give you some advice. And I know she is planning to go herself, so maybe you could go with her.‎ Text 5‎ W: I’m looking for a book in the history section. Can you tell me where that is?‎ M: It’s right in between cooking and personal health on the second floor. Just follow that hallway and you’ll see a set of stairs in the back.‎ Text 6‎ M: I can’t stand this heat. ⑥I can’t give my attention to studying for the mid-term exam. I guess I’ll have to go to the library this afternoon.‎ W: I don’t blame you. This dormitory doesn’t have an air-conditioner. ⑥I can’t study either. My roommate and I are thinking about moving out to the other dorm or an apartment that has an air-conditioner.‎ M: Oh, I’ve thought about moving, too. But if I want to live in an apartment, I’ll have to pay a lot of money for electricity.‎ W: Oh, no. That’s really expensive. Well, ⑦I guess I’ll tell my roommate we will see about the other dorm. If it doesn’t work out, we will sweat all summer.‎ Text 7‎ W: Hey daddy! You look great today. I like your tie! By the way, I was wondering if I can…‎ M: No!‎ W: I haven’t even told you what it is yet!‎ M: OK, OK, what do you want?‎ W: ⑧Do you think I could borrow the car? ⑨I’m going to a concert tonight.‎ M: Um… I don’t think so. I need the car tonight to pick up your mother.‎ W: Uh! I told you about it last week! Smelly Toes is playing, ⑨and Eric asked if I would go with him!‎ M: Who’s this Eric guy?‎ W: Duh! But there is something that I’m not accustomed to(习惯). People there are always expecting me to eat and I am much fatter now compared to before.‎ M: They are being polite.‎ W: I see. I also learned that it’s not polite for the guest to accept the offer of food at first.‎ M: Yeah, that’s right. If you are the guest, you have to refuse the food offered at the first or second time. If you don’t turn it down and just eat all the food, ⑪the host will keep on offering a lot of food until you leave some on your plate. You know, the host knows you are full in that way.‎ W: ⑫Well, in America, we usually eat all the food on the plate because we don’t want the host to think that we don’t like the food.‎ M: That’s difference.‎ Text 9‎ M: Well, ⑬your wedding day is this weekend. But it says that to have a happy marriage, I have to wear something old, something new, something borrowed—something that I borrow from another person—and something blue.‎ M: Old, new, borrowed, and blue, huh? I’ve never heard that one. So what are you going to wear?‎ W: Well, for something old, ⑭I’m wearing my grandmother’s diamond ring. And my wedding dress is something new, and I’m wearing blue flowers in my hair.‎ M: OK, that’s something old, new, and blue. ⑮You still need something borrowed.‎ W: ⑮Yeah, I just don’t know what, though.‎ M: Hey! How about this? ⑯It’s my lucky coin. I always wear it inside my shoe when I need good luck. You can borrow it and put it in your shoe during the wedding.‎ W: Oh, thanks! Now I’m ready for my wedding day.‎ Text 10‎ M: Good afternoon, everyone! Today I will give you a lecture about history education. ⑰I have been teaching history for about 30 years. Once, I asked myself, “What’s the best way to teach it?” ⑱Recently educators are rethinking their approach to history education. One new view is that it should be taught from the present backwards, keeping in mind the question, “Why is it like this today?” Let me give you an example. ⑲The traditional approach to teaching the history of business always begins with the history of the Industrial Revolution, and proceeds slowly through all the government action over three hundred years to the present. ⑳Critics say that method, making students only memorize names, places, and dates about the Industrial Revolution, is a waste. Instead, it’s more effective for learners to begin with a present-day question, like, “Why is the economy so bad these days?” and then go back to examine the history of business to find the answer. In other words, beginning with the question about the present is more effective than the former method because it demonstrates(演示) a cause-and-effect approach to the study of history.
