I struggled a lot with my identity because, I viewed myself as an artist while others viewed me as ridiculous (荒谬的). To make matters more confusing, being a clown is itself an identity-masking job. One night, I was asked to play as Batman. At the time I had a giant mustache. But I didn’t want to change my physical appearance, because that would have been me admitting I was more of a clown than an artist. So I chose not to shave(刮胡 子). The next day, I went to the party. Once I got close enough for the kids to make out the features of my face, the entire party burst into laughter. I was so embarrassed. But then came loud applause. Feeling kind of warm, I was thinking, “Is this what encouragement feels like? It’s so new.” I was still about 20 yards away from the party when I started running. They all started cheering louder, and at that moment, I was Batman. “You see, son. I told you Batman has a mustache.” said father of the birthday boy. I saw a huge Birthday cake with a frosting Batman drawn on it, and the Batman had a mustache. I stared at it in disbelief. That’s why everyone was laughing so hard when I first arrived, because when they brought the cake out, all the kids laughed, “Batman doesn’t have a mustache.” Instead of admitting the cake was messed up, the parents tried to save face and said, “No, Batman always has a mustache. He just shaves it for his movies.” Naturally, the children were doubtful. But they were at the perfect age where they still believed in miracles (奇迹). My mustache became the detail that confirmed what the parents had said and convinced the kids that I was actually Batman. That year, I struggled a lot with my identity: was I an artist, or was I a clown? But that day, at least, there was no doubt in my mind what I was. 24. How did the author feel about his work as a clown at the beginning? A. He was enthusiastic about his job. B. He had to depend on it to feed himself. C. It made him confused about his identity. D. Being a clown is the first step to an artist. 25. Why did the author refuse to shave his moustache? A. Because the real Batman had a moustache. B. Because he wanted to give the birthday boy a surprise. C. Because the birthday boy’s father asked him not to shave. D. Because he regarded himself as an artist rather than a clown. 26. How did the kids react when seeing Batman with a moustache? A. They applauded but lost interest soon. B. They believed Batman had a moustache at once. C. They ignored his moustache and played as normal. D. They laughed loudly because of his ridiculous moustache. 27. What can we learn from the story? A. Every effort you make will pay off in the end. B. Never give up struggling with the unfair world. C. We can find our own identity even in an ordinary job. D. Every child is an angel that believes in all good things. C Tune in tonight at 6:00 p.m. to catch a science awards ceremony like no other. The 30th First Annual Ig Nobel Prizes celebrates unusual scientific research “that makes people laugh, then think,” according to the Annals of Improbable Research (AIR), the magazine that organizes the annual event. Now in its 30th year, the Ig Nobels ceremony is always officially described as the “First Annual” because “every year is a new beginning,” master of ceremonies and AIR editor Marc Abrahams told Live Science in 2016. Former winners of Ig Nobel Prizes explored questions such as: Why do old men have big ears? Can you unboil a hard-boiled egg? And the eternal puzzle: Are cats a solid or a liquid? Since 1991, the ceremony has unfolded in front of a packed house at Harvard University’s Sanders Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Nobel winners typically hand the winners their awards. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic ( 新 冠 肺 炎 ), the 2020 award ceremony has been prerecorded, but it will still offer a science-themed opera— a long-standing Ig Nobel tradition, performed by opera singers and scientists from the Boston area—as well as plenty of surprises, Abrahams told Live Science. “Every part of the ceremony has been re-designed, because of the pandemic,” AIR representatives said in a statement. “The organizers even invented a new way for a Nobel winners on one continent to “physically” hand an Ig Nobel Prize to a new Ig Nobel Prize winner on a different continent.” How is that even possible? You’ll have to watch the Ig Nobels to find out. The ceremony will be broadcast live here on Live Science as well as on YouTube and AIR’s Facebook page as in previous years. Versions of the ceremony with translations in Japanese, Chinese and Spanish, will premiere at the same time as the U.S. version and will be accessible from the AIR website. 28. Why is the 30th First Annual Ig Nobel Prizes called the “First Annual”? A. Because every year is a new start. B. Because the ceremony is brand new this year. C. Because the ceremony is organized by the AIR for the first time. D. Because the aim of the ceremony is to make people laugh and think. 29. What can we conclude according to Marc Abrahams? A. The Ig Nobel ceremony is always recorded in advance. B. The 2020 Ig Nobel ceremony has prepared many surprises. C. Ig Noble competitors are addicted to strange but meaningful questions. D. It’s an Ig Nobel tradition to invite scientists around the world to perform. 30. How is the 2020 Ig Nobel ceremony different from before? A. All details about the ceremony will be broadcast online. B. It has been put off because of the COVID-19 pandemic. C. Nobelists cannot give awards to the Ig Nobel winners in person. D. It will offer a science-themed opera performed by singers and scientists. 31. Where can you most probably find the text? A. On a website B. On a noticeboard. C. In a science guidebook. D. In a daily newspaper. D The full stop, which comes from Greek punctuation (标点符号), is usually used to express the end of a sentence but now it frightens young people when used in social media communication as a sign of anger. According to experts, youngsters used to communicating electronically break up their thoughts by sending each one as a separate message, rather than using a full stop, which they use only to signal they are annoyed. Some have said the full stop is redundant when used in texting because the message is ended just by sending it. “If you send a text message without a full stop, it’s already obvious that you’ve concluded the message.” Owen McArdle from Cambridge University told the newspaper: “I’m not sure I agree about emails. I guess it depends how formal they are. But full stops are very much the exception in youngsters’ instant messages, and have a new role in expressing anger.” In 2015, a study from Binghamton University in New York suggested that people who finish messages with full stops are considered insincere. The study involved 126 undergraduates and the researchers found that text messages ending in the most final of punctuation marks—eg “lol.”, “let’s go to Nando’s.”—were considered being less sincere. Unusually, texts ending in an exclamation point—“lmao!”, “what body part even is that? I hope it’s your arm!”—are thought heartfelt. Research leader Celia Klin said at the time: “When speaking, people easily convey social and emotional information with eye gaze, facial expressions, tone of voice, pauses and so on. People obviously can’t use these when they are texting. Thus, it makes sense that texters rely on what they have available to them—special signs, deliberate misspellings that imitate (模仿) speech sounds and, according to our data, punctuation.” 32. What is the most likely reason for a young person to use a full stop when texting? A. To show insincerity. B. To conclude the message. C. To express his anger. D. To suggest it’s a formal message. 33. Which of the following is similar to the underlined word “redundant” in paragraph2? A. Irregular. B. Incorrect. C. Illogical. D. Unnecessary. 34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A. The full stop is not as important as before. B. The exclamation point is often used to show sincerity. C. Punctuation is always associated with an angry tone of voice. D. Deliberate misspellings are frequently used to convey emotions. 35. What could be the best title of the passage? A. A new punctuation. B. A new role of the full stop. C. A new generation with annoyance. D. A new way of texting in communication. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Tricks to Stay Efficient Even When I Feel Like Garbage People always try to take full advantage of those times when feeling highly motivated or inspired. 36 And staying efficient means having a plan for working well even when not feeling your best. Here are some principles. Optimize(最优化) for energy 37 As an editor, the most important is to write a high-quality article. Occasionally I’m extremely exhausted but have to “push through”. It only leads to low-quality work. 38 For example, although calling up a friend to chat isn’t super “important”, it’s energizing. I spend an hour not writing, but the energy I get from the call will make up for it and then some. 39 Many people feel like garbage because they’re too hard on themselves. I’m often going to feel unmotivated but I don’t beat myself up for little mistakes. I remind myself frequently that feeling bad is not a big deal. The secret to my consistent efficiency is: When times are tough, treat yourself like you treat a friend. Write down the one thing Sometimes I have lots of things to do, but it can be hard to find what I really need to be working on. 40 But we don’t always feel motivated—even to work on things we enjoy. And when I’m not feeling as energetic as I’m used to, I have one very simple trick: I write down my one thing. My one thing is the answer to this question: At the end of the day, if I did..., I would be proud of myself. A. Be merciful to yourself. B. Keep away from the garbage. C. But we all feel like garbage sometimes. D. I always arrange assignments in order of importance. E. Normally, I rely on motivation to get me through this dilemma. F. Therefore, optimizing for energy shows you can create motivation. G. The better choice is to re-rank tasks according to the energy they provide. Mickey Wilson was on the mountain at the Basin Ski Area. I started to go out with another woman. It was really my wife’s idea. “I know that you love her.” she said one day, taking me by surprise. “But I love YOU,” I protested. “I know, but you also love her.” The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. “What’s wrong? Are you well?” she asked. My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. “I thought that it would be pleasant to pass some time with you,” I responded. “Just the two of us.” She thought about it for a moment, then said, “I would like that very much.” That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as beautiful as an angel’s. “I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed,” she said, as she got into the car. “They can’t wait to hear about our meeting.” We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Half way through the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me with a smile on her lips. 注意: 续写词数应为 150 左右。 Paragraph 1: During the dinner we had an agreeable conversation. ____________________________________________ —————————————————————————————————————————— —— Paragraph 2: “How was your dinner date?” asked my wife when I got home. 56. to win 57. for 58. makes 59. an 60. herself 61. covering 62. darkness 63. Johnson credits his appearance on the American show Saturday Night Live in the year 2000 with helping him become an actor. Since then, he has gone on to feature in dozen of Hollywood productions, including Get Smart, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and the Fast & Furious series.
