The title suits him. And he loves it. Arthur Bonner works with the Palos Verdes blue butterfly, once thought to have died out. Today the butterfly is coming back—thanks to him. But years ago if you’d told him this was what he'd be doing someday, he would have laughed, “You’re crazy.” As a boy, he used to be “a little tough guy on the streets”. At age thirteen, he was caught by police stealing. At eighteen, he landed in prison for shooting a man. “I knew it had hurt my mom,” Bonner said after he got out of prison. “So I told myself I would not put my mom through that pain again.” One day he met Professor Mattoni, who was working to rebuild the habitat for an endangered butterfly called EI Segundo blue. “I saw the sign ‘Butterfly Habitat’ and asked, “How can you have a habitat when the butterflies can just fly away?” Bonner recalls. “Dr. Mattoni laughed and handed me a magnifying glass(放大镜). “Look at the leaves.” I could see all these caterpillars(蝴蝶的幼虫)on the plant. Dr Mattoni explained, “Without the plant, there are no butterflies.” Weeks later, Bonner received a call from Dr. Mattoni, who told him there was a butterfly needed help. That was how he met the Palos Verdes blue. Since then he’s been working for four years to help bring the butterfly back. He grows astragalus, the only plant the butterfly eats. He collects butterflies and brings them into a lab to lay eggs. Then he puts new butterflies into the habitat. The butterfly’s population, once almost zero, is now up to 900. For their work, Bonner and Dr. Matoni received lots of awards. But for Bonner, he earned something more: he turned his life around. For six years now Bonner has kept his promise to stay out of prison. While he’s bringing back the Palos Verdes blue, the butterfly has helped bring him back, too. 4.Bonner came to know the Palos Verdes blue after he ________. A. found the butterfly had died out B. won many prizes from his professor C. met Dr. Mattoni, a professor of biology D. collected butterflies and put them into a lab 5.From the passage we know that before Bonnet met Professor Mattoni, he was ________. A. interested in butterflies B. a tough boy on the streets C. known as Butterfly Man D. a good student in a university 6.From the last sentence of the text, we learn that raising butterflies has ________. A. made Bonner famous B. changes Bonnet’s life C. brought Bonner wealth D. enriched Bonner’s knowledge 7.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. A Promise to Mom B. A Story of Butterflies C. A Man Saved by Butterflies D. A Job Offered by Dr. Mattoni 【答案】 4.C 5.B 6.B 7.C 【解析】本文主要讲述了一个叫阿瑟的人通过养蝴蝶既拯救了蝴蝶,又拯救了自己的故事。 4. Weeks later,Bonner received a call from Dr.Mattoni, who told him there was a butterfly that needed help. That was how he met the Palos Verdes blue. As a boy, he used to be “a little tough guy on the streets”. At age thirteen he was caught by police stealing. At eighteen he landed in prison for shooting a man. For six years now Bonner has kept his promise to stay out of prison. While he's bringing back the Palos Verdes blue, the butterfly has helped bring him back, too." A Man Saved by Butterflies;故选C. It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there. This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the “handathon” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car. It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else—someone who wants to go home and get some sleep. Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills. Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Entrants in the Longview handathon certainly don't seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by “getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end. Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry(敌对)between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other's spirits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement. 8.The reason why the sport is called “handathon” is that competitors ________. A. cover a long distance B. keep hands in place for long C. wave hands as long as possible D. do the same thing as in a marathon 9.What ability is likely to be needed most in a handathon? A. Standing without any support. B. Not leaning on the car. C. Eating and drinking in five minutes. D. Having strong powers of attention. 10.What is the writer’s opinion about handathon? A. It is not as easy as it looks at first. B. It is the easiest of all sports. C. It can purify people’s spirits. D. It is not good competing in a handathon. 11.Which of the following about handathon is not right? A. The person who takes part in it should stand still. B. The person who takes part in it has to place his hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there. C. The person who takes part in it can have a break during the course of the competition. D. Handathons are competitions where competitors seldom encourage each other. 由第二段the winner of the “handathon” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. 在第一段作者就说“它好像是很容易”,第三段“那仍然看起来是很简单的事情”,但是马上来了个转折“But …,standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world.”,可知作者的观点:它不像看上去那么简单。选A。 D。 Traditionally, across the world, boys and girls attend a mixed school, where they study together. But boys’ schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music. Boys at single—sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond to(和……相符)the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”. The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls. Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warmed that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when girls do better earlier in speaking and reading skills. But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys’ learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study’s author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia. Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with “boy-focused” approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given “hands-on” lessons where they are allowed to walk around. “Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的)and prefer the modern genre(类型)in which violence and sexism are major themes,” James wrote. Single—sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel that they had to be “masterful and in charge” in relationships. “In mixed schools, boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means,” the study reported. 12.The author believes that a single-sex school would ________. A. force boys to hide their emotions to be “real men” B. help boys to be more competitive in schools C. encourage boys to express their emotions more freely D. naturally strengthen boys traditional image of a man 13.It is commonly believed that in a mixed school boys ________. A. behave more responsibly B. grow up more healthily C. perform relatively better D. receive a better education 14.According to Abigail James, one of the advantages of single—sex schools is that ________. A. teaching can be tailored to suit the characteristics of boys B. boys can focus on their lessons without being distracted C. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in D. teaching can be designed to promote boys' team spirit 15.What does the underlined word “acute” in Paragraph 7 mean? A. lovely.. B. sharp. C. serious. But boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness,可知有人认为单一性别学校有助于培养男孩在情感方面的表达,故选C. 13.C细节理解题。 The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls. But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, 可知他认为在单一性别学校,老师可以根据男孩的性格特点来制定和调整相应的教学方式,选A 15.B词意猜测题。 Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around. It will be very hard but also very brittle—that is, it will break easily. 例如:The “Chunnel”, a tunnel(隧道) connecting England and France, is now complete.此句中a tunnel connecting England and France是Chunnel的同位语。 例如:“Our parties are aimed for children 2 to 10,” Anaclerio said, “and they’re very interactive and creative in that they built a sense of drama based on a subject.” A child’s birthday party doesn’t have to be a hassle; it can be a basket of fun. Eating together as a family is a rare thing these days. 16.. So I’ve been bought books constantly. Finishing reading one book, I placed it in or around my school so that some of my schoolmate can treat themselves to the book. I especial like placing it on a stone table in the little garden in that students might have time to take a rest. I was delighted an other day when I saw a card left on the table to say thanks. And from the card, I knew my book turned out of to be a birthday gift for a strange girl. It was so lovely find out that my book could bring anyone pleasure! 【答案】第一句:but→and 第二句:bought→buying 第三句:placed→place;schoolmate→schoolmates 第四句:especial→especially;that→which 第五句:an→the 第六句:去掉of 第七句;find 前加to;anyone→someone/somebody 【解析】作者是一个大书迷,他也喜欢与人分享对书的热爱,这给他带来很多快乐。 第一处,but→and ,…like sharing my love for books与前半句为并列关系,改为and。 turn out to be… 此句中,to find out …. 第十处,anyone→someone/somebody 不定代词用错。 ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear John, I am Li Hua, a student in your class.
