Faraday's father suffered from long-time health problems. As a result, Faraday's family had little money and Faraday got only the least formal schooling. Actually. he sometimes had only enough to eat. But Faraday was curious and determined to learn. While working in London as a teenager, he had a chance to know various books and he read everything he could get his hands on. Thus Faraday soon educated himself on a variety of scientific subjects, and his life as a scientist began.‎ ‎ In 1812, Faraday attended four lectures at the Royal Institution given by a famous chemist named Humphrey Davy. Afterwards Faraday sent a letter to Davy, expressing a strong interest in the subjects covered in the lectures and offering his services as a helper. A year later, Davy accepted Faraday as his lab assistant. Davy also took Faraday with him on an 18-month tour of Europe, where Faraday met some of the most famous scientists of the day.‎ ‎ Thanks to his work with Davy, Faraday gained a complete scientific education. He soon began to do research and experiments with electricity. He constructed two machines to create electromagnetic rotation (电磁旋转), the force used to power electric motors. Apart from helping Davy mostly, Faraday began to appear on his own as a chemist and scientist of great importance. He began to give frequent lectures. Soon he was accepted as a gifted lecturer and published many research papers.‎ ‎ When Davy retired in 1827, Faraday took his place as the head of the chemistry department of the Royal Institute. Upon accepting the position he could focus on his own research, and Faraday's best-known work began in the 1830s. In 1831, he discovered electromagnetic induction(感应). And for the next eight years Faraday worked long hours in the laboratory which did harm to his health. By the end of the decade he was in such poor health that his research did not begin again until 1845.‎ ‎ In the mid-1850s, as Faraday gradually lost the ability to take care of himself he was forced to retire from his scientific studies. Queen Victoria offered him Faraday knighthood (爵士封号), but he refused it. He lived at Hampton Court, which Queen Victoria offered him, until his death on August 25, 1867.‎ ‎21.The text is mainly developed by _________.‎ A. giving examples B. analysing causes ‎ C. making comparisons D. following the time order ‎22.Faraday offered to be Davy’s helper because he wanted to __________.‎ A. meet other famous scientists B. travel all over the world C. get more chances to give lectures D. learn more about science ‎23.Which shows the correct order of the following events?‎ ‎ ① Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction.‎ ‎ ② Faraday taught himself on various scientific subjects.‎ ‎ ③Faraday had an opportunity to do research and conduct experiments.‎ ‎ ④Faraday began delivering speeches frequently and had many research papers published.‎ ‎ ⑤Faraday met Davy and a year later he was fortunate enough to serve as Davy's lab assistant.‎ A.⑤②③④① B.②⑤③④① C.⑤③①②④ D.②①⑤③④‎ ‎24.Which of the following can best describe Faraday?‎ A. New research shows that intelligence is not fixed but can be improved throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually challenging careers. The study challenges the commonly held belief that intelligence is fixed by the age of about 18.‎ ‎ Scientific consensus(共识) suggests intelligence is controlled by genes, with environmental factors such as schooling and nutrition playing a part up to this age. After this point, IQ scores become steady. But James Flynn, professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, argues that people can “upgrade” their intelligence throughout their lives. He believes intellectual stimulation (刺激)from other people is important as the “brain seems to be rather like a muscle---- the more you use it, the stronger it gets.” However, the opposite is also true---- so people who share a home or workplace with the intellectually challenged risk seeing their IQ levels nosedive as a result.‎ ‎ Professor Flynn analyzed US intelligence tests from the last 65 years and created new IQ "age tables". He found a bright ten-year-old with brothers and sisters of average intelligence will suffer a five to ten point IQ disadvantage compared to a similar child with equally bright brothers and sisters. However, children with a low IQ could gain six to eight points by having brighter brothers and sisters and special educational treatment to help pull them up.‎ ‎ Professor Flynn concluded that although genetics and early life experiences determine about 80% of intelligence, the remaining 20% is linked to lifestyle. This means people can raise their IQ, or allow it to fall, by ten points or more. He suggests the best way to improve IQ levels is to socialize with bright friends, and find an intellectually challenging job.‎ ‎25. According to the text, it is commonly believed that_______.‎ ‎ A. people's IQ levels fall as they age ‎ B. it is wise to share family members' views ‎ C. people cannot improve their intelligence during adulthood ‎ D. doing something challenging is good for one’s intelligence ‎26.The underlined word “nosedive”in Paragraph 2 most probably means________.‎ ‎ A.vary B.develop C.change D.fall 27.Which of the following can help improve one’s intelligence according to Professor Flynn?‎ A. Making many friends. B. Staying with smart people.‎ C. Exercise every day. D. Learning from brothers or sisters.‎ ‎28.The purpose of the text is to ___________.‎ A.inform B. advertise C. entertain D. persuade C ‎ A new concept vehicle, Pod was introduced by Toyota and Sony at the Tokyo motor show. The car is intended as a four-wheeled friend. It aims to provide affection, sympathy and encouragement. Like a dog welcoming its master, the car sits up, wags its tail and acknowledges its owner's presence using hydraulics (液压装置) and a multi-coloured LED display panel(引擎) across the front.‎ ‎ While on the road, the car constantly monitors the driver's mood with pulse and sweat sensors on the joystick(操纵杆). Cameras focused on the eyes keep watch for any sign of drowsiness. If a driver appears to be losing his or her cool, Pod will display warnings, play soft music and blow cold air at the face. Drivers are shaken awake with loud music and a shaking chair.‎ ‎ To improve driving skills, Pod compares acceleration, braking and steering with the best performance recorded by professionals. It uses this comparison to score drivers, offer advice and rank all Pod owners. Toyota claims that the car will eventually be able to learn its owner's likes and dislikes by monitoring passenger conversations. If the car hears a favourite song being discussed, it will download the track from the Internet and play it without being asked. It will also recommend restaurants that might suit the driver's taste and take photographs of passengers when they sound particularly happy.‎ ‎ In keeping with the moodiness that is the car's main selling point, Pod expresses a form of road anger. lf a driver brakes or swerves(转向) suddenly, the LED panel shows an angry red and the tail rises at the back.‎ ‎ Anger is one of the car's ten "emotional states". Another is sadness - a blue front with tear-shaped lights seemingly dropping from the headlights - which appears after a flat tire or when gas is low.‎ ‎ "We wanted to show that the cars can be cheerful and entertaining," said Yasunori Sakamoto, part of the Toyota design team. Mr Sakamoto said Toyota has no plans to put Pod on the market. Sad, really.‎ ‎29. The underlined word "drowsiness" in Paragraph 2 means ________.‎ A. fear B. boredom C. excitement D. sleepiness ‎30. According to the text, Pod can ________. ‎ A. rank the restaurants nearby B. evaluate the drivers' driving skills C. have a conversation with drivers D. recommend a song to passengers ‎31. If the new concept vehicle is running out of gas, ________.‎ A. the LED panel turns red B. the tail rises at the back of the car C. the front lights turn blue and look like tears D. the car stops and shakes with loud music ‎32. What is the author's attitude towards Pod?‎ A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Pessimistic. D. Tolerant.‎ D ‎ We know that our pet dogs and cats can recognize our faces, but our pet fish? A team of scientists from the UK and Australia have discovered that archerfish (喷水鱼) can distinguish human faces!‎ ‎ This marks the first time that a species of fish has shown such an ability.‎ Such abilities have been previously shown in birds, but unlike fish, they have been proven to possess structures similar to the neocortex(大脑新皮层), the researchers added.‎ ‎ "Being able to distinguish between a large number of human faces is a surprisingly difficult task," Dr. Newport said, "mainly due to the fact that all human faces share the same basic features."‎ ‎ During their experiments, Dr. Newport and her colleagues presented archerfish with two ‎ images of human faces, and trained them to choose one by spitting jets (喷射流) of water at that picture. Next, the fish were presented with the familiar face and several that were unfamiliar, and were able to correctly pick the one that they had been trained to recognize, even when features such as head shape and color were removed from the selected pictures.‎ ‎ In the first experiment, the archerfish were tasked with picking the previously learned face from a group of 44 new ones, which they did with 81 percent accuracy. In the second, the researchers decided to make things a little harder. They took the pictures and made them black and white and evened out(使平均) the head shapes. You would think that would throw the fish for a loop. But no, they were able to pick the familiar face even then ---- and with more accuracy: 86% !‎ ‎ "Fish have a simpler brain than humans and entirely lack the section of the brain that humans use for recognizing faces. Despite this, fish may still be capable of finding the face they are trained to recognize," Dr. Newport said. "The fact that archerfish can learn this task suggests that complicated brains are not necessarily needed to recognize human faces."‎ ‎33.The research shows that__________.‎ A. archerfish are cleverer than other fishes B. all fishes can be trained to recognize human faces C. complex brains are not necessary for facial recognition D. it is very difficult for animals to recognize human faces ‎34.We can infer from the text that_______________.‎ A. archerfish have a good memory B. the neocortex is linked with visual ability C. archerfis,h can only recognize human faces D. people's similar physical appearance limits archerfish's facial recognition ‎35.The text is most likely to appear in _________.‎ A. a biology textbook B. a medical report ‎ C. a science fiction D. a science magazine 第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) ‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ ‎ If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it----- depression doesn't just go away on its own. I blew kisses into the box. All for you, Daddy.”‎ The father was deeply touched. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged her forgiveness. He kept that gold box by his bed for years.
