I am a writer with an important magazine. The other day I saw a white-haired man sitting on the chair in front of his house. I could see the wrinkles (皱纹) in his face and neck, and his wrinkled hands. Articles on the secrets of living to an old age are always popular with our readers, so I decided to write a story and discover the secret of this man’s long life. As I went near him, I said:‎ ‎“Sir, would it be okay if I talked with you for just a moment?”‎ ‎“Not at all. Actually, it would make me very happy. I get very bored sitting here, even for a short time. Until a little while ago, I lived a full and active life without a moment’s rest.”‎ ‎“Well, they say that a lot of activities help one to live a long time.”‎ ‎“That’s true, very true. I still feel very well, although my step has slowed down a little.”‎ The conversation continued in that way for a while. Although I tried to be very thoughtful about getting information from older people, it seemed to me that it would now be all right to begin to ‎ ask some polite questions.‎ ‎“Would it be okay if I smoked?”‎ ‎“Not at all.”‎ ‎“I’d offer you one, but I suppose you probably don’t smoke, or drink, or…”‎ ‎“You’re wrong! I’ve always smoked a great deal. And until a little while ago, I went dancing every night. And as for alcoholic drinks____”‎ ‎“Do you mean to say that you’ve done these things all your life?”‎ ‎“Of course. Why does that surprise you so much?”‎ ‎“I’ve always been told that doing those things is bad for the health.”‎ ‎“Nonsense!”‎ ‎“I suppose that you have another secret ... a lot of fruit... vegetables ... a lot of exercise in the fresh air…”‎ ‎“Don’t be silly! I hate exercise in the fresh air, and I don’t like any kind of vegetable.”‎ ‎“This is unbelievable!”‎ ‎“What do you mean, unbelievable? What are you talking about?”‎ ‎“It’s just that I can’t understand how you’ve been able to live like that and to have lasted so long. Tell me, how old are you?”‎ ‎“Me? I’m twenty-eight. Why?”‎ ‎21.Why did Peter Brown decide to write a story about the man?‎ A. Because the man looked healthy.‎ B. Because he thought the man looked cool.‎ C. In the painting, a group of young boys are playing a game arm in arm on grass ground in front of a farm house. They are jumping and laughing wildly with great joy. One of the boys is falling down to the ground. They are not even wearing shoes!‎ During my last year of teaching, there was a young woman in her first year of teaching right next door to me and we got to be good friends. She had been an art student before taking up education. Her eyes were drawn immediately to this print when she entered my room. So on my last day of teaching, after the students had left, I took the painting off the wall and walked next door and gave it to her.‎ She was really surprised, but very pleased to have it. Studies have shown that people who live in warm, sunny climates are no happier than those in chilly, wet climates, he says. So the British talking about the weather may be making us gloomier(沮丧的) than the weather itself.‎ He said: “A study was done that measured the happiness levels of people in California compared to the North West. “They expected that people in California would be happier because it is more sunny, but they found that levels of happiness were exactly the same. If it is sunny every day you get used to it and the sunshine doesn’t make you any happier. Most of the time the weather doesn’t influence our well-being at all. But when we think about it, and think that it does, that’s when we get miserable.”‎ In his new book, Happiness By Design, Dolan argues that we can think ourselves happy by taking our attention away from what makes us sad.‎ ‎“Most of our anxieties come from what might be,” he argues. “If you want to be happier, pay attention to the things that make you feel good.”‎ He also claimed that a problem shared was not always a problem halved(减半). He believed that humans are actually very good at being able to get over tragedy(悲剧) and loss.‎ Professor Dolan also admitted for the first time that he had a stammer(口吃), which had made his early life miserable. He added it only got better when he learned not to pay attention to his speech problem.‎ ‎“Things are never as bad as you imagine them being,” he said.‎ ‎28.What has the research found?‎ A. British people don’t like to chat about the weather.‎ B. Cold days make people feel less happy.‎ C. People are more likely to be happy when the sun is shining.‎ D. Rainy days have no influence on people’s mood.‎ ‎29.What does the underlined word “miserable” in the second paragraph mean?‎ A. Good. B. Unhappy.‎ C. Cheerful. D. Confident.‎ ‎30.What is Dolan’s suggestion for being happy?‎ A. Don’t think too much about yourself.‎ B. Avoid comparing yourself to others.‎ C. Don’t focus on what makes you sad.‎ D. Avoid doing many miserable things.‎ ‎31.What do we know about Professor Dolan from the text?‎ A. Once he couldn’t speak fluently.‎ B. Once he didn’t want to share his problems with others.‎ C. He has the ability to get over bad things.‎ D. He has written many books about happiness.‎ D The most popular PE class at Waukegan High School in Illinois,US,takes place in a basement field house.‎ It is the school’s version of CrossFit,the difficult physical exercise that has exploded in popularity over the last 16 years at thousands of gyms.It has more than one million devotees(爱好者) and a professional competition shown on ESPN.‎ Schools around the Chicago area have adopted CrossFit to interest students at a time of a rising weight problem among young people, and most say it really works compared with traditional gym classes.‎ ‎“I think it’s a great way to teach kids lifelong fitness, especially those kids who aren’t interested in hockey(曲棍球),soccer or basketball,”said the teacher,Tracy Haraf from Illinois’Stony Creek Elementary, which devotes half of its PE days to CrossFit exercises. “They think it's tough, but I think they have a lot of fun doing it.”‎ Senior Alexus Wiltz,18,said the workout had improved her performance on the basketball court.“I noticed I was faster.I paid more attention on the court,my defending was better,”she said after a recent class.“It just really helped me.”‎ But some doctors and researchers advise caution, saying the exercises that involve lifting weights can lead to injuries, particularly when performed by few inexperienced people.‎ Doctor Craig Finlayson at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago said he was worried that while strength training is fine for kids, heavy weights could be trouble for teenagers who might hurt themselves by trying to do too much or using poor form.‎ CrossFit Inc,the company that certifies(证明) trainers and licenses gyms, disagrees that its program is more dangerous than other fitness routines.Gym teachers in Waukegan’s Greg Moisio, whose two-campus school has about 73%kids taking CrossFit each day, also say the risk of injury can be reduced with proper teaching and CrossFit’s flexibility(灵活性).‎ ‎32.Why have schools around the Chicago area adopted CrossFit?‎ A.
