S. usually means slower days, and no school Teachers know, however, that vacation means students will likely fall behind, and forget things they learned during the year. Simon Vanderpool, a special education teacher in Lexington, Kentucky, decided to do something about it. He started a program called Books and Barbers. Children go to the barber, choose a book and read out loud while the barber cuts their hair. The child gets a sticker and can take the book home. And there is an added bonus: money. The kids get paid to read. Vanderpool says barber shops are places where kids can feel comfortable. “Once a student feels comfortable, that's whenever the brain opens up, and that they are able to start focusing on nothing but learning. ”Amir Shalash owns a barber shop. But he is doing more than cutting children's hair. He is listening to them read, and helping them with their reading. Most of the children getting haircuts at barber shops are boys. Vanderpool's idea was to do more than just help them with reading and money. The teacher wants to help kids who are growing up in a home without a father like he did. “Also, I created the program in order to provide a positive mentor(指导者)for the kids that go into the barber shop, and are able to have someone that they can rely on and they can trust in, and just build a bond between the two of them.” Shalash says he and his fellow barbers like being mentors. “The biggest thing is that we try to influence as many kids as we can, and that was my whole intention of it. 4.Why did Simon Vanderpool start Books and Barbers? A.To help children kill time. B.To bring children a fruitful vacation; C.To reduce teachers, pressure from work. D.To improve children's communication skills. 5.What makes a barber shop suitable for Books and Barbers program? A.Its collection of books. B.Its quiet atmosphere. C.Its relaxing environment. D.Its friendly barbers. 6.What is Amir Shalash's purpose of taking part in the program? A. To offer valuable guidance to children. B.To show the importance of bonding. C.To tell the necessity of trusting people. D.To influence his fellow barbers positively. 7.What is the best title for the text? A.What It Takes to Be a Good Barber B.What to Expect During the Vacation C.How Important Reading Is to Children D.How a Haircut Is Helping Students Read C Until the 1990s coffee was rarely served in China except at luxury hotels aimed at foreigners. When Starbucks opened its first outlet there in 1999, it was far from clear that the country’s avid tea-drinkers would take to such a different-and usually more costly- source of caffeine. Starbucks tried to attract customers unused to coffee’s bitter taste by promoting milk and sugar-heavy concoctions(调制品) such as Frappuccinos. But coffee has become fashionable among the middle class in China. Starbucks now has about 3, 800 outlets in China- more than in any other country outside America. Statista, a business-intelligence portal(门户网站), says the roast coffee market in China is growing by more than 10 % a year. Starbucks and its rivals see big opportunities for expanding there. So too, however, do home-grown competitors. A major new presence is Luckin Coffee, Beijing- based chain. Since its founding less than two years ago, it has opened more than 2,300 outlets. On May 17th Luckin’s initial public offering (上市发行股票) on the Nasdaq stock market raised more than $570m, giving it a value of about $4billion. Luckin’s remarkable growth is sign of change. No longer do Chinese consumers see coffee as such a luxury. Most of Luckin’s outlets are merely kiosks where busy white-collar workers pick up their drinks, having ordered them online. Super-fast delivery can also be arranged through the company’s app. Independent coffee shops are springing up. The growth is striking given the country’s reputation for its tea-drinking culture where many residents like to relax in teahouses sipping tea served gracefully. But the two markets are different. The teahouses tend to cater to older people who like to spend long hours playing mahjong and gossiping. At the coffee shops it is rare to see anyone over 40. Young people use them for socialising, but much of their interaction is online -sharing photos of their drinks and of the coffee-making equipment. An option on the Chinese rating app Dianping allows users to search for wanghong ("internet viral") coffee houses: ones with particularly photogenic decor(照片装饰) . 8. How did Starbucks try to appeal to Chinese consumers? A. By reducing the price slightly. B. By introducing the benefits of coffee. C. By making coffee taste not so bitter. D. By promoting its products effectively. 9. What does Luckin Coffee’s growth suggest? A. People tend to like coffee’s bitter taste. B. People’s views on coffee-drinking have changed. C. People in China can afford coffee now. D. Tea is no longer part of Chinese culture. 10. What does the underlined word “kiosks” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Places where people can drink beer. B. Restaurants where food can be taken away. C. Shops aimed at people who like drinking coffee. D. Small shops or stores where newspapers and drinks are sold. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Coffee is taking off in China. B. Tea-drinking is not popular. C. Coffee or tea, which do you prefer? D. Coffee has become people’s favorite in China. D It is a question that has long puzzled scientists—exactly why are tigers orange? One might think it makes them more obvious-particularly against a leafy green forest background. William Blake summed it up in his famous poem known by generations of schoolchildren: “Tiger, tiger, burning bright, in the forest of the night.” But now the answer is at hand. While obvious to us, computer simulations (模拟) of what the big cats look to the main animals they hunt for, deer, show a different picture. Humans with normal colour vision, can see red, blue and green colours. But deer can only pick up blue and green light, they are effectively colourblind to the colour red, like some humans. It means the tigers’ orange colouration looks green to them, allowing them to mix perfectly into the background, new research claims. Dr John Fennell at the University of Bristol and his colleagues said that they used computers to estimate how noticeable a given animal was. They did this by using images of the environment in which the animal lives, and then creating images to see whether the camouflage helps the animal to mix in. Dr Fennell writes that by simulating what the world looks like to animals who are “two-colour vision”—someone who cannot discover the difference between red and green—“we also identify the most suitable colours for hiding and visibility”. Dr Fennell writes in the Royal Society Journal Inter face: “Considering the coat of a tiger, it has fur that appears orange to a three-colour vision observer rather than some shade of green, though the latter should be more appropriate color for an attack hunter in forests. However, when viewed as a two-colour vision observer, the tiger’s colour is very effective.” The question then arises as to why tigers don’t grow green coats. Dr Fennell and colleagues write that mammals (哺乳动物) are not able to produce green fur. To do so would “require a significant change to mammalian biochemistry”. There is only one mammal known to have green fur but this is achieved through what might be considered as, well, cheating, not exactly real. 12. Why does the author mention the poem in paragraph 1? A. To arouse reader s interest in poems. B. To show the authors respect to the poet. C. To answer the question of the color of the tiger D. To stress the noticeable color of the tiger to us. 13. What color doesn’t exist in the eyes of deer? A. Black. B. Red. C. Blue. D. Green. 14. What does the underlined word “camouflage” mean in paragraph 3? A. The cover of something. B. The images of something. C. The way of hiding something. D. The way of hunting for something. 15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. The colour of tigers sometimes cheats people. B. Getting green may prevent tigers from being extinct. C. There are no mammals with real green fur in the world. D. The tigers’ fur will probably evolve into green in the future. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Imagine that you are in a remote village somewhere with no medical clinic. 16 Once the doctors get to you, they examine you and take blood samples, but they won’t be able to help you until they take the samples back to the hospital to find out what is wrong. 17 Thanks to engineer Andy Ozcan, many people may never be in this situation. He has invented an app that turns your mobile phone into a diagnostic tool. Ozcan's invention is important because it is very accurate and easy to use. In many remote places, even if doctors have microscopes and other instruments to help them make diagnoses, there may still be other problems. Many doctors, for example, don’t have enough training to correctly interpret what they see. 18 With Ozcan's mobile phone app, health workers can take a special photo of a blood sample and send it to a central computer at a hospital. The computer will thenautomatically interpret the photo and send a diagnosis back in a few minutes. 19. His technology only requires a mobile phone and an Internet connection. As more than four billion people already have cell phones, the cost of establishing the diagnostic system is fairly low. By inventing a medical tool that uses existing technology mobile phones Ozcan has developed a medical tool that is both practical and economical. Therefore, it can be effective almost anywhere. 20 A. As a result, they may diagnose illnesses incorrectly. B. People are trying to reduce the cost of this new medical tool C. This tool has become much more popular all around the world D. Another reason that Ozcan s invention is important is that it is inexpensive. E. You become very sick and must wait days until a mobile medical unit arrives to help. F. Ozcan s simple and cost-effective tool might just save millions of lives around the world G. Even though you may only have a simple infection, you might die just because of the delay. 第二部分完型填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 At my heaviest I weighed 370 pounds. I’m very happy to be invited to this program today. I’d like to share with you my impression of Paris. Actually, there’s something interesting to see in every corner of Paris: the old buildings, neighborhoods, and the historical monuments. The weather’s been great too, cool and dry. Some aspects of life here are different from those in the United States. The most obvious thing is that there is much more activity in the streets than in a typical US city. People gather together in open markets, cafés, parks, and squares. Then, of course, there’s the food. Food seems to be more important here. It’s beautifully shown in windows and markets. Everything is fresher and better tasting than at home. I’ve gained five pounds since I arrived. There are a few things that bother me though. I’m still having a hard time with the language. People speak very fast and it’s hard to get them to repeat things. People, in general, are less warm here and it’s hard to make friends. I guess that can be true in any big city in a new country, but the French do seem to be less friendly than the people back home. 31-35 Good morning. This is Michael Jones here with the 10:00 News Report. Earlier this week, we heard about Milton, the dog that traveled over 3,000 miles to reunite with his family. When the Johnson family moved from California to New York, they couldn’t find their dog and they were sad to leave him behind. About a month later, Milton showed up at their doorstep in New York. We cannot believe how far this dog traveled! The family will be doing an interview in the studio tomorrow morning. In other news, there’s been an outbreak of car thefts in Orange County this week. About ten cars have been stolen from outside their owners’ homes since Monday. If you see or hear anything, please call 911. About ten people found themselves stuck on a roller coaster after it broke down at the Six Flags theme park on Tuesday in Union City. The victims swung upside down for around three minutes as staff worked to restart the roller coaster. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
