After she refused to go “have a drink” with them, one of the men grabbed her by the arm. To her surprise, a stray dog(流浪狗)suddenly appeared and didn’t stop barking at the pair. The small, black dog stood by Bradley’s side until the men walked away. Bradley, who has decided to name the dog Pepper, told The Herald: “she saved me. Pepper shot out of nowhere, jumped up at me and began barking and licking(轻拍) my hand, and that made the men think twice. She must have noticed something was wrong. When I went back to the apartment she followed me and finally let me move our hands gently over her. We had an instant bond. When I got home, I couldn’t stop thinking about her, so I took the soonest flight back that I could, which was two weeks later.” Bradley would fly over 6,000 miles back and forth to the Greek island over a period of five weeks searching for the dog. “It was a real risk because we may never have found her again. But when we saw Pepper on the beach, it was the best feeling ever.” Pepper was given a pet passport. After adopting Pepper, she flew her home to the UK. Pepper then had a further surprise for her owner, as she gave birth to six puppies. “It has been such a crazy journey,” Bradley added. “But I am over the moon.” 24. A Girl Spending Thousands to Adopt a Dog C The world’s most popular type of banana is facing a major health crisis. According to a new study, a disease caused by a powerful fongus(真菌)is killing the Cavendish banana, which accounts for 99% of the banana market around the globe. The disease, called Tropical Race 4(TR4),has affected banana crops in southeast Asia for decades. In recent years, it has spread to the Middle East and the African nation of Mozambique. Now experts fear the disease will show up in Latin America, where the majority of the world’s bananas are grown. Once a banana plant is infected with TR4, it can’t get water and nutrients. TR4 lives in soil, and can easily end up on a person’s boots. If the contaminated(污染)boots are then worn on a field where Cavendish bananas are grown, the disease could be transferred. “Once a field has been contaminated with the disease, you can’t grow Cavendish bananas there anymore.” scientist Randy Ploetz says. Cavendish bananas are produced in mass quantities and are popular among consumers. But once one banana plant gets infected(感染),it just runs like wildfire through that entire plantation. One solution to solve the problem, Ploetz says, is to try to develop new bananas that can resist TR4. “It really needs to be done, but we don’t have it yet.” He notes that we still have time before we need to worry about the Cavendish banana disappearing. 28. The disease, called TR4 has affected banana crops in the following areas EXCEPT . A.Mozambique B. Latin America C.the Middle East D. southeast Asia 29. If a banana plant is infected with TR4, the banana plant will probably die of A. cold B. poison C. heat D. thirst 30.We can infer that the disease, called TR4 can . A.damage a person’s boots. B. be cured easily with chemicals. C. last for a long time in the soil. D. be prevented from spreading. 31 .What is the ideal way to solve the problem? A. To promote the sales of bananas. B. To throw away the infected bananas. C. To develop a new variety of the bananas resisting TR4. D. To bury the infected bananas in the soil. D The pursuit of happiness can be a lifelong search for some—but researchers believe they may have found a key factor in feeling a greater overall sense of well-being. Nottingham Trent University researchers found that the more an individual identified with(产生共鸣)a particular group, such as family, in their local community or through 汪 hobby, the happier they were with their life. “Our findings suggest that thinking more about one’s group life could have significant benefits for an overall sense of well-being said Dr Juliet Wakefield, a psychologist at Nottingham Trent University. “We tend to identify with groups that share our values, interests and life priorities, as well as those that support us in times of crisis, and we can see how this would be linked to happiness. Our work taps into(挖掘)knowledge that is deep within all of us, but which we often forget due to the fast-paced and achievement-focused nature of modem life—to be your best self, you are likely to require the support of others. ” They studied how 4,000 participants felt connected to certain groups, and then measured the influence this had upon their levels of happiness. It’s important to note that identifying with a group isn’t the same as membership, though. You can be a member of a group with which you feel no connection at all. It’s that subjective sense of belonging that’s important for happiness. Health care professionals should encourage people to join groups that they are interested in, or which promote their values and ideals, as well as advising people to maintain association with groups they already belong to. Simple social interventions(干 预)such as this could in turn help to reduce health care expenses and prevent future ill health. 32. According to the passage, who are much happier? A. People who feel a strong sense of belonging to a group. B. People who gain membership of many social groups. C. Individuals who have happy families. D. Individuals who have many hobbies. 33. They live a busy and stressful life. D. They need others, support to improve themselves. 34. What does the underlined word “ this ” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Prevention of future ill health. B. Reduction of health care expenses. C. Health care experts’ encouragement and advice. D. Promotion of people’s values and interests. 35. What is the text mainly about? A.The secret to happiness B.
