I wish I could just give them a little bit of hope and make them believe that they can have dreams,” says Obada Kassoumah, who is a Syrian student in Tokyo now. He has become a translator of Japanese comics into Arabic(阿拉伯语).‎ As a student at university in Syria, Obada received a scholarship to go to Japan on an exchange program. That was in 2012, and the unrest(动乱) in the country had already started. When the situation got too dangerous, his parents decided to send him to live with his aunt in Jordan until he could leave for Tokyo.‎ When his scholarship ended a year later, he was able to stay in Japan as a regular student, and picked up a part-time job translating Captain tsubasa. “I watched it as a kid and I loved it,” says Obada. “It’s a story about a kid having a dream to become a professional football player and working hard to make that dream come true. That’s something should make these kids see.”‎ ‎“For Syrian kids it is very important to be able to escape from reality for a while. And these books can also give them some hope for their own future,” explains Prof. Masanori Naito, who had spent several years looking for ways to help kids affected by the conflict. One of the places where Captain Tsubasa now provides a small escape from reality is a refugee(难民) home where copies were handed out to around 60 refugees. “What the kids usually get are of course clothes and food, and so they were really surprised when they suddenly had Japanese comic books in their own language. And you really could tell that from their eyes!” says Prof. Masanori Naito.‎ Back in Tokyo, Obada Kassoumah has decided to keep translating even more adventures of Captain Tsubasa into Arabic. He hopes his translations will put a smile on the face of a Syrian child somewhere, trying to forget the terror of the past.‎ ‎24. Why did Obada translate the Japanese comics?‎ A. To gain fame. B. To satisfy his hobby.‎ C. To inspire Syrian kids. D. To improve his Japanese.‎ ‎25. What can we know about Obada?‎ A. He had a poor record at college.‎ B. He was moved by Captain Tsubasa.‎ C. He stayed with his aunt in Tokyo.‎ D. He dreamed of being a football player.‎ ‎26. The fourth paragraph suggests that____________.‎ A. Captain Tsubasa is popular with Syrian kids B. around 60 refugees lack basic necessities of life C. most Syrian kids dream of leaving the refugee home D. the conflict has ruined Masanori Naito’s hope for the future ‎27. What will Obada do next?‎ A. Return to his own country. B. Enjoy adventures in Japan.‎ C. Forget memories from wars. D. Continue his translating work.‎ C A leaky(渗漏的) pipe can cause much damage. Inside, it can ruin floors, walls and furniture. Outdoors, water leaking from a high-pressure water pipe can wash away soil and create sinkholes. And even before such leaks cause damage. they can rob communities of much clean water needed for drinking and other uses. But a teen now has found a way to detect damage in a water pipe ----even one buried in the ground. In some cases, his technique might find a failing pipe before it leaks a drop.‎ Sanjay Seshan, 15, attends Dorseyville Middle School in Pittsburgh, Pa. He presented his research here at the finals of the Broadcom MASTERS science competition. He first became aware of large-scale water leaks while traveling through a poor area in India. There, he recalls seeing just “one community pipe and it was leaking water everywhere.” When he returned home, Sanjay did some work and learned that U. S. water-delivery equipment was deteriorating, too, which included about 240,000 breaks each year in water mains. This means a huge waste of money and clean water.‎ This made Sanjay start to explore how he might look for damage in buried water pipes. Inspired by a clarinet(黑管), he attached a tiny but powerful speaker to the outside of a plastic pipe. Next he put one small microphone near the speaker and another much farther away. Then, he used a computer program to send electrical signals to the speaker. Those signals caused the speaker to shake at particular frequencies. The results showed the pipe transmitted(传输) some frequencies better than others.‎ After measuring how well a healthy pipe transmitted each sound pitch, Sanjay damaged the pipe and then ran his tests again. The pipe’s sound transmission changed. This was true even for 3-meter-long pipes he had buried in his backyard. So, he concludes, the technique offers hope that pipes could be operated with sensors (传感器) and then monitored over long periods.‎ 28. What event drew the teenager s attention to water pipes?‎ A. His trip to India. B. His research in India.‎ C. The science competition. D. A report on Indian pipes.‎ ‎29. What does the underlined word "deteriorating"in Paragralaph 2 mean?‎ A. Confusing. B. Improving.‎ C. Worsening. D. Changing.‎ ‎30. What did Sanjay Seshan do in his experiment?‎ A. He had a powerful Speaker fixed inside the pipe.‎ B. He attached two tiny microphones to the pipe.‎ C. He used a computer to control the whole process.‎ D. He damaged almost all the pipes in the end.‎ ‎31. What should be the best title for the text?‎ A. Research has been conducted on leaky water pipes.‎ B. A damaged pipe shakes differently from a healthy one.‎ C. A leaky pipe has become easy to repair thanks to a teen.‎ D. Teen finds a way to detect failing underground pipes.‎ D Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.‎ ‎ Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places – and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.‎ ‎ Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.‎ ‎ Don’t forget the clock – or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turning on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.‎ ‎ Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily makes us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.‎ ‎32. The text is especially helpful for those who care about ____.‎ A. their body shape B. their home comforts ‎ C. house buying D. healthy diets ‎33. A home environment in blue can help people ____.‎ ‎ A. digest food better ‎ B. regain their appetites ‎ C. burn more calories ‎ D. reduce food intake ‎34. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?‎ ‎ A. Eat quickly.‎ ‎ B. Play fast music.‎ ‎ C. Use smaller spoons.‎ ‎ D. Turn down the lights.‎ ‎35. What can be a suitable title for the text?‎ ‎ A. Ways of Serving Dinner ‎ B. Is Your House Making You Fat?‎ ‎ C. Effects of Self-Consciousness ‎ D. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?‎ ‎ ‎ 第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10 分) ‎ ‎ 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ A city beneath the sea ‎ French underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio discovered the remains of Heracleion, a long-lost Egyptian city, beneath the waves of the Mediterranean Sea in 2000. Even though she had no college degree, he asked her to become a researcher. She lived with the chimpanzees for over thirty years and wrote down what they did. She published her research. Some people criticized her research. They said she should have given the chimpanzees numbers instead of names.(18)After she left the jungle, she became interested in saving the environment.(19) She opened the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to educate people about the environment. She has written many books and still travels around the world, helping children understand the natural world. In 2002, she opened a Jane Goodall Institute in Hong Kong, China.
