Scope: Team Winter is an organization you founded to raise money for cancer research. How did it get started? Winter: At first, Team Winter was formed to fight childhood obesity (肥胖). When I was 8, I ran a race and raised $1,100 for that cause. But less than a year later, my dad got cancer. I knew I had to do something to help. When I started, my goal was to raise $10,000. I’ve raised well past that — almost $500,000. Scope: What goes through your mind when you run? Winter: When I’m having a hard time during a race, I think about my dad. If he could deal with the pain of cancer, I can deal with any type of pain. He was a very friendly person. He was always smiling and very happy even when he had cancer. Scope: Is your age ever an obstacle (障碍) in your races? Winter: I’ve been turned down by race directors who won’t let anyone younger than 16 or 18 compete. But Diana Nyad, the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, told me, “Never let them tell you it can’t be done.” From then on I knew my age wasn’t the problem. Scope: You’ve probably inspired lots of people too. Winter: I’ve heard about kids doing projects like me. Once in a restaurant, a boy came up to my mom and me and told us his dad had cancer too. Now he’s competing in running for his dad. Hearing stories like that helps keep me going. 21. What do we know about Team Winter? A. It always holds different races. B. Its final goal is to raise $500,000. C. It was named after Winter’s father. D. It was to help obese children at first. 22. When Winter has a hard time during a race, what keeps her going? A. Her father’s illness. B. Her father’s success. C. Her father’s bravery. D. Her father’s kindness. 23. Winter’s words in the last paragraph tell us that ________________. A. she sets a good example to others B. she hopes others will do what she does C. the boy wants to join Team Winter D. the boy invites her to compete with him B I love my blackberry—it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer,as it holds all of my writing and thoughts .Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备) and truly communicate with others. On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule —no laptop, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy. Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students. The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course the material and the class discussion. I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom. I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up. 24. Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with________________. A. the course material B. others’ misuse of technology C. discussion topics D. the author’s class regulations 25. The underlined word “engage” in para.4 probably means _______________. A. explore B. accept C. change D. reject 26. According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may _______________. A. keep students from doing independent thinking B. encourage students to have in-depth conversations C. help students to better understand complex themes D. affect students’ concentration on course evaluation 27. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author _________________. A. is quite stubborn B. will give up teaching history C. will change his teaching plan soon D. values technology-free dialogues in his class C About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman. There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades(阴影) of green. Sometimes a person can’t tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man sees everything in shades of green--a strange world indeed. Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones(圆锥细胞)”. These help us see in a bright day and tell the differences between colors. There are also millions of “rods(棒条体)”, but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shape, but not color. Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes like blue but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible(看不见的) colors around us. 28. The passage is mainly about . A. color and its surprising effects on drivers B. women being luckier than man because fewer of them are color blind C. color blindness and how our eyes tell different colors and shapes D. danger caused by color blindness 29. According to the passage, with the help of “cones”, we can . A. see in a weak light B. tell different colors C. tell different shapes D. tell orange from yellow 30. Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women? A. There are fewer color blind women. B. Women are more careful. C. Women are fonder of driving than men. D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking. 31. Which of the following statements about color blind people is true? A. None of them can see deep red but all can tell blue from green. B. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color. C. None of them can tell blue from green but all can see deep red. D. All of them are lucky enough to see everything in shades of green. D Today, we talk about a common object that appears in many expressions--buttons! Buttons, which are usually small and round and made of metal or plastic, are found on all sorts of clothing. They fasten or connect one piece of clothing to another in order to make sure your clothes don’t fall off. To be cute as a button is an old saying, which means to be attractive or sweet, but in a small way. Babies are often described as cute as a button. Language experts don’t know why. But they do say this expression dates back to the late 1860s. Here is another expression related to button: button-down. People often wear button-down shirts to the office. Button-down as an adjective means to be conservative or traditional. People described as button-down stay as close as possible to the normal way of dressing and behaving. When buttoning a button you slip it into a buttonhole. A buttonhole traps the button. So, to buttonhole someone means you have trapped them in a spoken conversation. Now, let’s say you find yourself buttonholed in a conversation at a party. Someone just keeps talking and talking and talking! Finally, you can’t take it any longer. You tell the person to button it! This is a direct, but unacceptable way of saying, “Stop talking!” Button your lip is another equally rude but effective way to stop a person who talks too much. Another kind of difficult person is someone who pushes one’s buttons. To push one’s buttons means to know exactly how to get that person angry or upset. People who like to push other people’s buttons usually do it for selfish reasons. They find a person’s weak point and then they use it to upset them. 32. What do you think of someone who wears a button-down shirt to the office? A. Funny. B. Fashionable . C. Crazy. D. Traditional. 33. What will you probably say to get rid of a long and boring talk? A. Be cute as a button. B. Button your lip. C. Push your buttons. D. Be button-down. 34. How does the fourth paragraph mainly develop? A. By making contrasts. B. By giving examples C. By listing figures D. By analyzing cause and effect 35. What does the underlined phrase “pushes one’s buttons” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Learns of one’s secret. B. Shouts loudly C. Gets someone to lose his temper D. Argues with someone 第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Why do people travel?
