HELP WANTED B After a year at sea, 16-year-old Laura Dekker can finally say, “Mission accomplished!” Last month, she finished a daring trip around the world aboard her 38-foot boat, Guppy. Dekker, who is from the Netherlands, traveled more than 30,000 miles all by herself. She is the youngest person ever to sail around the globe alone. Dekker had wanted to take on this challenge when she was even younger. She first tried to set sail at the age of 13, but a court in the Netherlands stopped her. They said that she was too young to make such a risky trip by herself. But Dekker insisted she had the navigation skills and patience of an adult sailor. She finally took off on January 20, 2011. During her trip, Dekker battled loneliness, storms, and worries about pirates. But she also got to surf, scuba dive, and started a new hobby: playing the flute. Although Dekker didn’t spend all of her time at sea—she stopped at ports along the way—she did spend her 16th birthday on the open ocean. To celebrate, she ate doughnuts for breakfast. But Dekker didn’t sail into the record books. Guinness World Records and the World Sailing Speed Record Council no longer recognize records for “youngest” sailors. They dropped the category in 2009 to discourage children from attempting such dangerous action. But that didn’t stop Dekker, who was born on a yacht during a seven-year world voyage undertaken by her parents. Dekker doesn’t mind that she won’t hold an official record. She says it was a personal goal, and she is happy she achieved it. “I am not disappointed at all that Guinness World Record won’t recognize my attempt.” Dekker wrote on her website. “I did not start on my trip to achieve any record … I did it just for myself.” 24. Dekker wasn’t allowed to sail at the age of 13 because ________. A. people were concerned about her safety B. she didn’t learn any sailing skills well C. she didn’t have enough patience for long trips D. she had to continue her study at school 25. What does the underlined word “accomplished” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Failed. B. Completed. C. Started. D. Continued. 26. In 2009 records for youngest sailors were canceled in order to ________. A. set a higher sailing standard for teen sailors B. stop children entering Guinness World Records C. prevent children making dangerous attempts D. encourage parents to sail with their children 27. What could be the best title for this passage? A. A New Guinness World Record in Sailing B. A New Sailing Standard for Teen Sailors C. The Youngest Sailor in Guinness World Records D. A Teen Girl Sailing Alone Around the World C In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking if it will disturb them. At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill. Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day. Serving in restaurants is often large, too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself. Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”, which means an especially big noon meal. Tipping plays an important role in American people’s daily life. It reflects a kind of good manners and appreciation for the services provided. Usually tips are not added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. Generally speaking, a tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. 28. Which of the following statements is true? A. American people like sitting with people they don’t know. B. A hostess will seat a small group at a large table if it’s available. C. American people never sit with people they don’t know even if they have to wait. D. Americans think it impolite to smoke without asking when sitting with people they don’t know. 29. What is served before you order? A. Bread B. Butter C. Cold water D. Coffee 30. What do American people always do when servings are too large for them? A. They take the food home with a “doggie bag” for their dogs. B. They just leave the food on the table and go away. C. They ask the waitress or waiter to keep the food for them. D. They take the food home with a “doggie bag” and enjoy it later. 31. What can you learn about “tips” according to the last paragraph? A. The price of the meal usually includes the tip. B. People are not always expected to pay tips after a meal. C. Tips are supposed to be left on the table when customers leave. D. Customers should give a tip of about 25% of the price of the meal. D In Modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity; others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people. I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求)of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that wound mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to disappear can we discover a new meaning in competition. 32. What does this passage mainly talk about? A. Competition helps to set up one’s self-respect. B. People hold different opinions on competition. C. Competition is harmful to one’s development. D. Failures are necessary experience in competition. 33. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage? A. It pushes society forward. B. It builds up a sense of duty. C. It improves personal abilities. D. It encourages individual efforts. 34. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with “a desire to fail”? A. One’s success in competition calls for great efforts. B. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills. C. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others. D. One’s success relies largely on his firm belief of winning. 35. Which point of view may the author agree with? A. Competition damages friendship among people. B. Performance in competition determines one’s value. C. Winning should be a matter of life and death. D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Five Ways to Build Self-Confidence *Walk Faster One of the easiest ways to tell how a person feels about herself is to examine her walk. People with confidence walk quickly. They have places to go, people to see, or important work to do. Even if you aren’t in a hurry, you can increase your self-confidence by putting some energy in your step. 36 * 37 One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to an inspiring speech. Unluckily, opportunities to listen to a great speaker are few. You can fill this need by creating a personal commercial. Write a 30-60 second speech that focuses on your strengths and goals. Then recite it in front of the mirror aloud whenever you need a confidence push. * Sit in the Front Row In schools, offices and some other public places, people always sit at the back of the room. 38 . This reflects a lack of self-confidence. By deciding to sit in the front row, you can get over this meaningless fear and build your self-confidence * Speak Up During group discussions many people never express their opinions because they’re afraid that people will judge them for their saying something stupid. 39 By making an effort to express your opinions at least once in every group discussion, you will become a better public speaker, more confident in your own thoughts and recognized as a leader by your peers(同龄人). * Work Out Along the same lines as personal appearance, physical fitness has a huge effect on self- confidence. 40 By making your body fit and strong. You improve your physical appearance, refresh yourself, and accomplish something positive. A. Listen to an Inspiring Speech B. Create a Personal Speech C. In fact most people are dealing with the same fear. D. Walking 25% faster will make you look and feel more important. E. In fact most people feel good after a walk. F. Most people prefer that because they are afraid of being noticed. G. If you’re out of shape, you’ll feel insecure, unattractive, and less energetic. 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A, B, C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 No one is born a winner.
