How can you recreate that special moment influenced by place and time? Travel is becoming the most popular reason to visit many places around the world. Here are the places that consistently excite the senses. South of France Markets with fresh fruits and vegetables and butcher shops are abundant. Regional (地区的) wines are excellent. And freshly baked French bread with French butter is what memories are made of. Take a chair in an ancient walled city for a meal with a view that you will never forget. Barcelona This bustling city filled with unique buildings is a city for lovers of history, architecture, and food. Kiosko Universal, a counter restaurant at one corner of the market, prepares some of the simplest and best food we've ever had. Give yourself a week to explore and see everything the city offers. The city is not to be missed. Italy It's hard to choose one place or city to visit. Some of our favorite places include the coastal regions on the Adriatic and Tuscany. Friuli stole our hearts last year with its many unique wines, small artisan food producers, and influences from neighboring countries like Austria and Germany. Mexico City From unbelievable food markets and casual street stands, Mexico City has become the place to travel for the food lovers. If you want to eat locally, order a Hurache, a street food specialty. All you need is a local microbrew or Mezcal (龙舌兰酒) to wash it down. 21. They are tourist attractions. B. They have ancient buildings. C. They lie in Europe. D. They are well known for tasty food. B Everyone seems to be living for someone else. I had once helped a friend run a watermelon stall. I noticed something interesting: Almost every buyer would lift the melon up to their ear, and tap it, apparently trying to listen to something. I wondered what they expected to hear. Finally I could no longer hold back my curiosity and asked a customer—an elderly gentleman—about this. Hearing my question, he roared with laughter. Then he replied in a self-mocking (自嘲) tone, “Young lady, I have been doing this for more than fifty years. But all I know is that everybody would stare at you as if you were a fool if you just pick up a melon and leave!” Not long after that, my watermelon stall friend sent me an invitation to her wedding, which really surprised me. I asked her,“Why are you seized by a sudden desire to get married? I don’t remember ever hearing you mention that you’ve got a boyfriend.”She answered while counting money,“Everyone has to get married anyway, so it is better to get married sooner than later.” I could think of no word to refute (反驳) her. It seems that everybody is living for everybody else and has forgotten the need of their own heart. It may be safe and save a lot of worries by following others’ suit in doing things. The use of WE or US will give one a steady and sure sense of pride. But why do people usually feel uneasy when using “I”? I find all these things somewhat funny. We have got used to following others’ example. We feel at ease and justified simply because this is a way of US, a way which has been practiced by so many people. But is this massive practice really right? 25. Why did the elderly gentleman tap the watermelon before buying it? A. Because he expected to hear something. B. Because he was a fool. C. Because he just wanted to follow the crowd. D. Because it was his habit and it was hard for him to give it up. 26. Which word can replace the underlined word “justified” in the last paragraph? A. reasonable B. embarrassed C. excited D. disappointed 27. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. People may feel safe to do what most people do. B. People should live for others and forget their own heart. C. The writer felt unexpected when her friend wanted to get married. D. The use of We or I will give speakers themselves quite different senses. 28. In which section of a magazine can you read the passage? A.Nature and Art B. Sport and Health C.Science and Technology D. Culture and Society C Amazing Facts About Elf Owls The elf owl is mostly found in the southwestern parts of the United States and Mexico. During the spring and summer seasons, it moves to Arizona and New Mexico. It returns to Mexico for the winter. The elf owl doesn't build its own nest. It lives in tree holes. The elf owl is a yellow bird with dark wings. Its eyes are bright yellow and its feet are large. It is the smallest owl of the species, only about 12.5-14.5 centimeters long. It is also the world's lightest owl, weighing not more than forty grams. In general, female elf owls weigh more than male ones. The female usually lays three eggs at a time. After the young elf owls are born, their mother will feed them with worms for up to three to four weeks. After 10 weeks, the young ones are fully grown and ready to take flight. The elf owls do not behave in a threatening way. When danger comes, they will fly away in the other direction, rather than staying and facing the danger or their enemies. Besides flying, the elf owl can also walk and climb like a parrot. The elf owl is most active after dusk, during the night and just before dawn. It can produce many different kinds of sounds. It can live for three to six years in the wild. If they are kept in cages, they can live for ten to fourteen years. The elf owls are now in danger because of the loss of habitat. Cutting down trees will result in lack of places for them to live in. 29. According to the first two paragraphs, the elf owl may . A. live in Mexico in winter B. have yellow wings C. have big and dark eyes D. build its nest in trees 30. What can we learn from the text? A. The female elf owl lays one egg at a time. B. The elf owl can live no longer than six years. C. The elf owl sleeps at night and searches for food during the daytime. D. The female elf owl provides her young with food for three to four weeks. 31. What is a characteristic of the elf owl? A. It prefers to live in cages. B. It has a gentle character. C. It is not good at climbing. D. It is most active during the day. D Cutting trees in half can help scientists understand the past and now it appears it can be used to predict the future. Researchers have been looking at ring growth from trees to make sense of past weather patterns such as droughts and rain. Combining data from the rings allowed them to create a copy of pictures of climate changes over the past 2, 000 years and this information could also be used to foresee future famine (饥荒), unrest and conflict. The project has been named Old World Drought Atlas, or OWDA. Its main author, Columbia biologist Edward Cook, has already carried out similar projects using trees to create chronological (按顺序排列的) maps of drought in Asia and North-America. He believes that combining the three atlases could throw light on the global causes of drought and climate change. The study, for instance, gave special attention to the importance of one of such causes, the North Atlantic Oscillation (波动), in affecting climate patterns in Europe, and specifically in making Europe wetter north of the Alps and drier south of them. The OWDA also helped analyse historical events from a climatic perspective. For instance, the 1740-174l famine in Ireland had so far been explained by an unusually cold winter and spring, but the atlas shows that unusually low rainfall over the spring and summer of 1741 could also have played a role. Finally this made growing food nearly impossible and caused a continent-wide famine. A better grasp of these processes could even make it possible to predict future famine, unrest and conflict. Cook said, “the Old World Drought Atlas fills a major geographic gap in the data that’s important to determine patterns of climate changes in time. That’s important for understanding causes of many droughts, and it’s important for climate modelers to test hypotheses (假说) of climate forcing and change.” 32. Why is ring growth useful in research? A. It's the best way to understand the past. B. It could be used to predict the future. C. It could be used to prevent the outbreak of droughts and rain. D. It isn't mentioned in the passage. 33. People worldwide can read chronological maps of drought_____. A. in Asia B. in Africa C. in Europe D.in South America 34. What is the author's attitude toward the study of OWDA? A.Positive. B.Negative. C. Objective. D.Conservative. 35. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? A. To show he interviewed Cook himself. B. To tell us the importance of OWDA. C. To compare climate variability. D. To analyse how to predict droughts. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Teach kids About Setting Goals[] 36 It can become an easy process for a lifetime if kids are taught goal setting at an early stage. They need to be offered a project to make them work on accomplishing something personal. Set smart goals. A goal needs to be measurable, specific, realistic and timely in order to be effective. Kids prefer generalizing(泛化)when it comes to goal setting. For example, one may want to be the best basketball player in the team. 37 What exactly does a goal like this mean? You need to ask them to be specific. Begin with scoring two baskets in each game (or however many; just something measurable!) so that they can continuously push the barriers to accomplish greater goals. Write down goals. 38 Recent studies show that when goals are written down, the individual is likely to achieve them. 39 Kids have the habit of choosing goals that just seem impossible to achieve. You need to teach them the concepts of short and long-term goals and give your child reality checks. Set up review points. You can ask them to write their main goals on the poster and mention the steps they would take for attaining their goals. 40 It is important to help your children have their own checkpoint systems that actually work for them. A. Goals can’t be accomplished absolutely unless they are written down. B. This tip is supported by science as well. C. How is a goal like this measured? D. Ask them to track their progress once a week or month. E. Face goals that are not realistic. F. Is it a really big goal? G.
