That’s definitely been the case for Jeffrey Lanenberg, a 51-year-old paramedic (急救医务人员) since 1984.‎ Ten years into the job, Lanenberg received a call that reported that a man in his early 30s had fallen down in the Mall of America. When Lanenberg and his partner arrived at the scene, they found the young male face down on the ground. He had gone unconscious, making weak attempts to breathe. His wife stood beside him holding their small son in horror. They quickly rushed to defibrillate (除颤) and calm the man to keep him under control. After Lanenberg dropped the patient off at the neighboring hospital, he thought about the man and his family for a long time.‎ Lanenberg thought he had experienced everything under the sun until one random visit to Office Max three years ago, where he met a man repeatedly walk back and forth while staring at him. As it turned out, the man was the patient he had saved 20 years earlier.‎ ‎“You gave me 20 years more than I ever thought I’d have,” the man said. He thanked Lanenberg repeatedly and told him he had someone he wanted him to meet. He stepped around the comer and reappeared with a 20-something-year-old man. Lanenberg instantly knew that it was the son he had seen standing by his mother all those years ago.‎ ‎“That day changed my life,” Lanenberg said. “Before that, everything was about work... When I talk to my beginner-training class, I tell them you never know the impact you can have on someone’s life.”‎ ‎24. What did Lanenberg do with the young man?‎ A. He gave the man the first aid. B. He cured the man at the scene.‎ C. he only sent the man to hospital. D. He took care of the man’s wife and son.‎ ‎25. What did Lanenberg think of the encounter with the man?‎ A. It was unbelievable. B. It was a common routine.‎ C. It was a matter of course. D. It was a dangerous situation.‎ ‎26. Why was the man thankful to Lanenberg?‎ A. Lanenberg helped bring up his little son.‎ B. Lanenberg donated to support his family C. Lanenberg gave him the present happy life. ‎ D. Lanenberg taught his son to be a new doctor.‎ ‎27. How did the meeting change Lanenberg’s life?‎ A. He changed his attitude to his job.‎ B. He was rewarded with much money.‎ C. He got a promotion to be a team leader.‎ D. He took up teaching work to train newcomers.‎ C Why do you go to the library? For books, yes—but you like books because they tell stories. You hope to get lost in a story or be transported into someone else’s life. At one type of library you can do just that—even though there's not a single book.‎ At a Human Library, instead of books, you can ‘borrow’ people. People with unique life stories volunteer to be the ‘books’. For a certain amount of time, you can ask them questions and listen to their stories, which are as fascinating as any you can find in a book. (If you attend, be sure to review the habits that make you a good listener.) Many of the stories have to do with some kind of depressing topic. You can speak with a refugee, a soldier suffering from PTSD (创伤后遗症), a homeless person and a woman living with HIV. The Human Library encourages people to take time to truly get to know and learn from someone they might otherwise make a snap judgement about. According to its website, the Human Library is ‘a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.’‎ The Human Library Organization came to be in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2000. Romni Abergel and his colleagues hosted a four-day event during a major Northern European festival. After the success of this event, Abergel founded the Human Library Organization, hoping to raise awareness among youth about depression, which has been growing ever since.‎ Though there are a few permanent human libraries, most aren’t places at all, but events. Though many do take place at physical libraries, you don't need a library card—anyone can come and be part of the experience. There have been human library events all over the globe, in universities and in pubs, from Chicago to Tunis to Edinburgh to San Antonio. Check out the organization's Facebook page to see when the Human Library might be arriving near you.‎ ‎28. What shall we do before going to the Human Library?‎ A. Bring a book. B. Get a library card. ‎ C. Make an appointment. D. Go over some listening habits.‎ ‎29. What does the underlined word ‘snap’ in paragraph 2 mean?‎ A. True. B. Quick. C. Wrong. D. Obvious.‎ ‎30. Why did Ronmi Abergel found the Human Library Organization?‎ A. He expected to answer different questions.‎ B. He successfully held an event in Northern Europe.‎ C. He wanted young people to pay attention to depression.‎ D. He had set up the Human Libraries all over the world.‎ ‎31. What is the best title of the text?‎ A. ‘Borrow’ People Instead of Books B. Human Library Organization C. Human Library Is Near You D. A Library in Denmark D A report released this month found that grouping children by ability is on the rise again—teaching students in groups of similar ability has improved achievements for fast and slow learners alike—and who wouldn’t want bright kids to be able to move ahead?‎ But for most kids, labels applied early in life tend to stick, even if they are wrong.‎ Sorting school children by ability has long been controversial. In some countries, especially in Asia, school-wide tracking (分流) remains normal. Children are tested and placed in different schools that direct them toward professional or vocational careers. Movement between the tracks is rare.‎ School-wide tracking decreased in US schools in the 1960s and 1970s. It never died out, though. Sorting students into separate tracks for math at about junior high school age continues to be common, and other forms of tracking persist as well.‎ Unlike tracking, which means sorting students into separate classrooms, ability grouping happens within classrooms. When done according to the latest research, it has proven to promote achievements. Ability grouping is changeable and temporary. Within classrooms, students might be divided into different learning groups dealing with materials of different levels. Any students who master concepts can move upward between groups, and the student groups might look different from subject to subject and unit to unit. For instance, a student who stands out in language arts might be at an average or slower level in math. A student who flies through multiplication tables might need extra help with fractions. Students who lag in reading can be pulled out of the classroom in small groups for practice with a tutor until their reading improves.‎ Research shows ability grouping within classes has more positive benefits than tracking. However, that must be weighed against the challenges involved. In many regular classrooms, the differences between student ability levels are very big. That presents challenges for teachers and low-performing students to constantly compare themselves with students who seem to fly through school with ease.‎ The rigid ability groups and tracking of the past are still with us in many schools. Likely, labels are applied with more caution than in the bad old days when some teachers gave reading groups not-so-secret code names like “Bluebirds”, “Robins”, “Crows” and “Buzzards”. But kids still know.‎ ‎32. Why is grouping children by ability becoming popular again?‎ A. Because most teachers do not like slower learners.‎ B. Because grouping children should be done early in life.‎ C. Because it is academically beneficial to different learners.‎ D. Because fast learners can move ahead without teachers’ help.‎ ‎33. By saying “Movement between the tracks is rare.” in paragraph 3, what does the writer really mean?‎ A. Tracking children is normal in Asia.‎ B. School-wide tracking has decreased in US.‎ C. Professional and vocational careers are unrelated.‎ D. Sorted students can hardly change schools.‎ ‎34. What does the examples in paragraph 5 mainly illustrate?‎ A. A good language learner promises to be good at math.‎ B. A student might join different groups for different courses.‎ C. Ability grouping benefits gifted students more than slow ones.‎ D. Ability grouping presents no challenge for those slow students.‎ ‎35. What might be the challenge in regular classrooms for teachers?‎ A. Students’ different levels.‎ B. Students’ low performance.‎ C. Constant self-comparison.‎ D. Application of not-so-secret code.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ If something that you’re doing doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.
