His constant commitment to self-improvement made him stand out. Learn more about why we find celebrity deaths so upsetting.‎ Case in point: his strategy of calling successful business people — often ones he’d never even met before. He was willing to put the legwork into growing his success. In a 2014 interview with Bloomberg, Bryant described his process. “I want to know more about how they see the world,” he said. “Some of the questions that I’ll ask will seem really simple and stupid,” he admitted. “But if I don’t know, I don’t know. You have to ask.”‎ Who were some of these successful people that Kobe Bryant so looked up to? To name a ‎ few: Oprah Winfrey, Mark Parker and Hilary Swank. And he didn’t just call them to say he called them; he made sure they were all leaving him more knowledgeable. Three years ago, Lowercase Capital founder Chris Sacca described his own interactions with Bryant. Sacca said he told Bryant to “do his homework” on investing — and Bryant went above and beyond. “For the next few months my phone never stops buzzing in the middle of the night,” Sacca marveled (大为赞叹) on The Bill Simmons Podcast. “It’s Kobe, reading this article, checking out this tweet.” Clearly, this was someone unafraid to give his all.‎ Though he left us, Bryant’s constant desire to do more and be better is inspiring for sure. While we may not be able to call Oprah, we can certainly follow his example in other ways. We can surround ourselves with other motivated people that we can learn from; not be afraid to ask potentially embarrassing questions if we know they’ll help us.‎ ‎4. Bryant is so eager to learn about his unknowns.‎ D. Chris Sacca is so free to wait for Bryant’ s calls.‎ ‎7. What is the author’s main intention in writing the passage?‎ A. To make an introduction about Kobe Bryant.‎ B. To explain the reason why celebrity deaths are so upsetting.‎ C. To encourage readers to be brave and frank as Kobe Bryant.‎ D. To attract the attention of people from all fields on Kobe Bryant.‎ C Head to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and if you’re lucky, you’ll get tossed by a strand of ‎ purple, green or gold beads. The official colors of Fat Tuesday presented to the public for the first time in 1872 at the first parade of Rex, the king of Mardi Gras. Newspapers of the day ran official announcements from the king of the carnival deciding with authority that balconies should be covered with purple, gold and green. Ever since this triumvirate of colors has been associated with Mardi Gras, but why is the question.‎ Before we get to the answer about why those three colors, let’s answer the easier question as to why Mardi Gras has three colors. When local historian Errol Flynn Laborde researched the 125th anniversary of the Rex krewe(the organization that produces the parade), he came to the conclusion that the Rex founders believed “a king must have a kingdom and a kingdom must have a flag,” notes MardiGrasNewOrleans.com. A tricolor flag was the obvious choice as the United States, Great Britain, and France each have one.‎ Then, let’s examine why purple, green and gold. While it was long thought that the colors were selected to honor Russian Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich Romanoff’s 1872 visit, Laborde has a different theory. According to traditional heraldry rules (纹章学规则), a coat of arms needs both colors and metals; there are five choices of color: purple, green, red, blue, and black and the metal choices are limited to silver and gold. Purple has long been associated with royalty, making it an easy choice. Gold, likewise, was obvious as it’s more fitting for a king than silver. From there, Laborde found that the field was narrowed down to purple, gold, and green or purple, gold, and black. We may never know why green was picked as the third color.‎ The colors weren’t given an official meaning until 1892 when the Rex parade had the theme “Symbolism of Colors.” That’s the year it was decided that purple stood for justice, green for faith, and gold for power.‎ ‎8. Why are there three kinds of colors in the Mardi Gras?‎ A. Because mixed colors are attractive.‎ B. Because it had relation with the Rex founders.‎ C. Because colors were limited at that time.‎ D. Because it was decided by Alexei Alexandrovich Romanoff.‎ ‎9. Why is gold easy to be chosen than silver?‎ A. Because it has higher value.‎ B. Because it stands for loyalty.‎ C. Because it’s more fitting for a king.‎ D. Because it is associated with heraldry rules.‎ ‎10. What does “green” stand for according to the passage?‎ A. Justice. B. Power.‎ C. Faith. D. Harmony.‎ ‎11. What is the best title of the passage?‎ A. How Were the Colors for Mardi Gras Chosen?‎ B. What’s the Meaning of Colors for Mardi Gras?‎ C. Why Not Head to New Orleans for Mardi Gras?‎ D. Why Are the Mardi Gras Colors Purple, Gold, and Green?‎ D No one is yet sure what role digital outlets will play in sports media in the future, but they are very much a part of the present, even if everything still is in the experimental phase.‎ MLB dipped its toes into these waters in 2018, when it exclusively (独占地) streamed 25 games on Facebook, starting with a Mets-Phillies game last April. But among the 25 games into the YouTube version, it seems to have created less confusion than the first game did, perhaps because the concept no longer is new, and perhaps because it is so frictionless (无摩擦的). Tim Katz, YouTube’s head of sports partnerships, said that while there has been “a little bit of aversion to change” among fans unaccustomed to watching on a stream, “generally once people are there we’ve seen really positive feedback.”‎ For MLB, the YouTube package allows for experimenting further with streaming, while also trying to reach new, presumably younger fans. Erin Teague, head of product for YouTube sports, said the goals of making traditional fans comfortable and attracting new ones were the key part of the planning process. “We want to make the experience easy to get to for everyone,” she said. “We view this as an opportunity to increase the audience across the board. I think that’s really important.”‎ Katz noted that historically YouTube has not offered much live sports, so this is a way to provide more quality content for its users. As for what might come next and whether digital outlets such as YouTube might battle television networks for sports rights, Katz would not predict. But these games are providing experience and data about audiences. “For us, I think it’s really ‎ interesting to test and learn and that the lack of negativity has been really encouraging for us.” he said.‎ ‎12. What does the passage say about digital outlets?‎ A. They have become a popular part at present.‎ B. They are bound to play an important role in sports media in the future.‎ C. They have not been a part of the present in sports media.‎ D. Everything about them has entered the trial stage.‎ ‎13. The underlined word “aversion” in Paragraph 2 means ___________.‎ A. curiosity B. imagination C. hate D. joy ‎14. What can we learn from the third paragraph?‎ A. YouTube will stop working together with MLB in the future.‎ B. It will be impossible for Erin Teague to increase the users according to the current situation.‎ C. More attention should be paid to making traditional fans comfortable.‎ D. YouTube may be targeted at younger fans by streaming.‎ ‎15. What’s Katz’s attitude towards the future of digital outlets?‎ A. Positive. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Neutral.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Toilet paper’s been enjoying special attention these days. Although it has always been an essential bathroom item, everyone’s trying to stock up on as much toilet paper as possible since they know they’ll be stuck inside for a while. 16 ‎ How is toilet paper made?‎ First, it’s important to understand how to make toilet paper. Toilet paper is made from cellulose (纤维素) fibers that come either directly from trees or recycled paper, according to Jessica Carette, a chemist for the Cascades Tissue Group. 17 Toilet paper creation comes in two basic parts: making the raw paper and turning it to the end product you buy in the store, explains David Altemir. ‎ Why is toilet paper white?‎ Carette notes that cellulose fibers are also naturally white. The glue holding them together, however, is brown which goes away thanks to bleach(漂白), Carette says. 18 Plus, toilet paper from recycled paper uses mostly office waste or printer paper, which is already white, too, according to Carette. Although bleached virgin pulp (原生纸浆) produces the softest fibers to make tissue, unbleached and recycled fibers can also make high-quality tissue as well, Carette says. ‎ ‎19 ‎ Although white toilet paper like this is common in America, color toilet paper was trendy in the past. In the 1950s, people would even match their toilet paper with their bathroom color scheme. It reportedly died down, however, thanks to concerns about the safety of pastel dyes for the skin. 20 Most toilet paper in North America is white because of consumer preference, according to Carette. But in places like Europe, toilet paper comes in a rainbow of colors, even black, she adds.‎ A. Are there other toilet paper colors?‎ B. The fibers mix with water to make pulp.‎ C. Converting virgin pulp to toilet paper requires more water than recycled paper.‎ D. Plus, color toilet paper increases the cost to make the rolls.‎ E. But have you ever wondered why toilet paper is just plain white?‎ F. Since toilet paper doesn’t necessarily have to be white to be soft and absorbent.‎ G. So it’s not necessarily just the process, but also the raw material that makes toilet paper white.‎ 第二部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分55分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ ‎“...The action must be in line with me. For their study, researchers focused 29 on the brains of people taking in a classical violin performance. They 30 a musician playing 12 short musical pieces, while looking directly at the camera — and keeping a neutral expression throughout the performance.‎ That 31 was then played for an audience of 16 college students, all of whom were connected to brain-monitoring equipment called functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The result of that technology is considered a(n) 32 measurement of brain activity. 33 , the researchers found that blood flow in the brains of each listener imitated that of the performer. Brains were 34 synchronized, undergoing the same processes at the same time. And the more listeners enjoyed the music, the more 35 that mental mirroring became.‎ At the very least, the research goes a long way toward explaining why we often 36 so interested in an artist on stage — even while 37 among an audience of thousands. It’s the kind of close relationship, which the brains produce in singing together in 38 harmony.‎ ‎“Music is everywhere in our lives, but little is 39 about the neural basis of well-received music,” the researchers write. “This study expands our understanding of music 40 .”‎ ‎21.
