Italy was the first country to lockdown in Europe but has seen a recent decline in the total new daily cases. Now, some establishments, such as bookstores and children's clothing stores, have been allowed to open under the condition that customers wear protective masks and gloves. These businesses must enforce social distancing and sanitize their shops twice a day. Spain This week, an estimated 300,000 non-essential employees went back to work in the Madrid region, as Spain lifted some of its lockdown measures which have been in place since March 15. Currently, the lockdown will remain in place until April 26 but could be extended. Meanwhile, the police are distributing more than 10 million face masks to those individuals returning to work. Austria Garden centers and small stores have reopened in Austria but customers are required to continue social distancing and must wear masks. After Italy, Austria was the first European country to take lockdown measures. Now, it's one of the first European countries to lift lockdown measures. Denmark On March 12, the government limited gatherings, increased testing and sanitizing efforts. Now, children have returned to schools and some churches were opened for Easter last weekend. A.Bookstores have been allowed to open unconditionally in Italy. B.Austria was the first European country to take lockdown measures. C.Some large gatherings can be held before the end of August in Denmark. D.A large number of face masks will be handed out to people returning to work in Spain. 22.What does the word “lift ” in the passage mean ? A.Pick up B.remove C.raise D.increase 23.The passage is probably taken from_______ A.a research paper B. a guide book C. a news report D. a website B Why do people spend so much money on fashion? Do they want to create an image or make sure they are not old-fashioned? Do people really judge each other by the clothes they wear? The billion-dollar fashion industry certainly tries to convince consumers that such judgments are made. Possibly, they may be right. A recent study using elementary school students was interesting. They said that people wearing Calvin Klein designer jeans were more handsome and successful than those wearing Wranglers. Levi' s-wearers were seen as sporty, fashionable and fun! Obviously we learn early that “Clothes make the man.” In other words, clothes show age, outlook, status and income. However, clothes that look great on professional models may look terrible on the average buyers. Although beautiful clothes don't help physically, they are important for social and psychological effects. Expensive clothes can make the wearer feel like part of the high status group that sets taste and style. So you are buying an image of success. You may really live a routine life, waking up in the morning feeling dull and ordinary. But when you dress in these expensive clothes, your mood brightens. You feel good, ready to face another day with energy. Sound crazy? People who love clothes say it's true. Of course, a lot of people don't like high fashion. They'd rather spend their money on something practical. In their opinion, when people blindly follow the trend only to show off,the pursuit of fashion will become the pursuit of luxury, which will be a waste of resources. 24.According to the passage, the main reason why people spend much money on fashion is that _. A.they just want to keep up with the latest fashion B.they really judge each other by the clothes they wear C.the fashion industry lead them to consume more on fashion D.it is human nature to buy more and make themselves beautiful 25.What does “Clothes make the man” mean in the passage? A.The man often makes clothes. B.Many people like others by the way they dress. C.Being good-looking may possibly make a person feel better. D.In most cases, the impression of you is determined by your clothes. 26.Which of the following statement is NOT true? A.Going after the latest fashion blindly will be a waste of resources. B.Clothes looking great on models may be ugly on the average buyers. C.People who love clothes say that expensive clothes brighten their mood. D.Beautiful clothes have important social and psychological effects on all. 27.The author's attitude towards fashion is _. A.positive B.neutral C.critical D.negative C April 23 is the 25th World Book and Copyright Day. The Chinese Academy of press and publication has released the 17th national reading survey. The annual national reading survey shows people's reading habits have barely changed over the past several years. The survey says about 59 percent of the adults in China read books, with one adult, on average, reading 4- 5 books a year. This means a large number of people don't read, and those who do so read only a few books a year. An equally worrying fact is that even students, teenagers in particular, seem to be avoiding books as they spend more time and energy swiping through videos. There are many reasons why fewer people today read books. To begin with, given the fast-changing social atmosphere, many people today tend to spend time on hobbies rather than reading. In addition, many senior family members have become indifferent to reading, thereby failing to inculcate( 灌输) the love for books among their children and grandchildren. So senior family members, parents in particular, should create an atmosphere that would prompt their children to read books. The lack of public libraries, too, might be responsible for the falling number of readers. For example, China has less than 3,300 public libraries, compared with more than 160,000 in the United States. And unlike countries such as the US and Britain which promote reading among communities, China lacks a well-established public service system to provide books for readers. To encourage more people to read books, newspapers and magazines, governments at all levels should improve the existing public libraries, especially in rural areas, and set up community bookstores. Plus, the government should take measures to educate the public about the advantages of serious reading. Publishing houses should focus on printing books that are good both in content and production value to attract more people to books. School should also set up foundations that can recommend valuable books to students. Moreover, government departments could set some special days for theme-based reading in order to encourage more people to read books. 28.Which statement do you agree about the national survey? A.Most adults read 4 or 5 books monthly. B.Adults are more interested in watching videos. C.Students tend to spend less time reading books. D.Adults read but just cover a few books annually. 29.Why do people read fewer books today? A.They tend to read more online articles. B.They pay more attention to their work. C.More parents don't have the ability to read. D.There is a lack of reading atmosphere and public libraries. 30.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4? A.To give advice on contents to publishers. B.To present reading activities to students. C.To list ways of promoting reading books. D.To prove the importance of reading books. 31.What can be the suitable title for the text? A.The Benefits of Reading. B.The Reasons for Reading less. C.Three Ways to Read More Books. D.An Appeal for Reading More Books. D If we want a fair shot at transitioning to renewable energy, we'll need one critical thing: technologies that can change electricity from wind and sun into a chemical fuel for storage and vice versa (反之亦然) .Commercial devices that do this exist, but most are costly and perform only half of the expectation. Now, researchers have created small lab-scale devices that do both jobs. If larger versions work as well, they would help make it possible---at least more affordable— to run the world on renewables. The market for such technologies has grown along with renewables: In 2007, solar and wind provided just 0.8% of all power in the United States: in 2017, that number was 8%, according to the U. S. Energy Information Administration. But the demand for electricity often doesn't match the supply from solar and wind. In sunny California, for example, solar panels regularly produce more power than needed in the middle of the day, but none at night, after most workers and students return home. Some companies are beginning to install massive rows of batteries in hopes of storing extra energy and balancing the financial sheet. But batteries are costly and store only enough energy to back up the power system for a few hours at most. Another option is to store the energy by transforming it into hydrogen fuel. Devices called electrolyzers ( 电解器) do this by using electricity— ideally from solar and wind power— to break down water into oxygen and hydrogen gas, a carbon-free fuel. A second set of devices called fuel cells can then transform that hydrogen back to electricity to power cars, trucks, and buses, or to feed it to the power system. But commercial electrolyzers and fuel cells use different catalysts( 催化剂)to speed up the two reactions, meaning a single device can't do both jobs. The researchers must conquer this. "They did a really good job with that" says Sossina Haile, a chemist at Northwestern University in Evanston. Still, she holds a cautious view that both her new device and the one from the O'Hayre lab are small laboratory demonstrations. For the technology to have a societal impact, researchers will need to scale up the button- size devices, a process that typically reduces performance. 32.What can we learn about the new device from the first paragraph? A.Its universal use remains to be seen. B.It is more expensive but more practical. C.It can transform more renewable energy. D.It is the most advanced around the world. 33.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A.The rapid development of American technologies. B.The potential market for energy transformation technologies. C.The history of energy transformation technologies. D.The lack of power in California. 34.What does the underlined word “this” probably refer to in paragraph 3? A.transforming energy into hydrogen fuel B.transforming hydrogen back to electricity C.breaking down water into oxygen and hydrogen gas D.using different catalysts to speed up the two reactions 35.What may the researchers focus on next? A.Lessening costly batteries. B.Increasing the efficiency of the two reactions. C.Looking for one shared catalysts for the two reactions. D.Breaking down water into a carbon-free fuel without using electricity. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 People who love to laugh are healthier and happier. This is equal to a splash of cool, fresh water for the respiratory system They have lower chances of heart disease. A study conducted at the University of Maryland found that there is a link between laughter and cardiovascular(心血管的) health. In other words, people who love to laugh improve the function of their blood vessels and increase blood flow. 37 They have an endless supply of natural pain reliever. 38 That's because the feel-good hormones released into the system when you laugh not only help ease fear and anger but also help to relieve pain. 39 They want to tap into this and other benefits of laughter. 40 People who love to laugh tend to be significantly less violent and aggressive in society.
