B Halloween is a great time in the lives of both children and adults. However, even the best Halloween can be ruined by trees filed with toilet paper and egg residues(残余物) that won't wash off. How can you keep your home safe on Halloween? There are some measures you can take. Make it known that you're at home. Pranksters are less likely to play a trick if they know someone is at home. You may want to close the glass on your screen door and open your front door so that you can see everyone moving around outside. This also allows pranksters to see that you're at home. Turn on the lights inside your home and outside. Having all the lights on lets pranksters know that you’re not only at home, but you're awake. If a prankster knows you' re awake, he'll be more likely to skip your house and head for another one. Even if you need to get in bed early, keep all the lights on except in your bedroom. Pranksters aren't going to know which room is your bedroom. Ask the police to “patrol" the area. It's a policeman's job to keep citizens safe, especially on Halloween. In some cities the crime rate can increase fast, on October 31. A polite call to your local police station should get you the service you need. Best of all, no pranksters are going to throw eggs at your house when the policemen are patrolling the area. Set up a neighborhood watch. One of the best ways to keep your home safe on Halloween is to get the neighbors involved. No one wants his trees covered with toilet paper. Ask your neighbors to keep their eyes open and to follow the same steps you've taken to help keep your home safe. If the entire neighborhood is lit up, pranksters are less likely to stop by. 59. The underlined word "Prankster” in Paragraph 2 probably means some people who_____. A like Halloween very much B. often commit a crime at night C. play practical jokes on people D. enter one's house by force 60. How can you make pranksters know you are at home and skip your house? A. By turning on inside and outside lights. B By moving around outside your house, C. By closing your front door. D.By staying up and being awake. 61. What can we learn according to the fourth paragraph? A. A policeman's main task is to patrol the area. B. The crime rate increases fast in some cities. C. The policemen can help a lot with your home safety on Halloween. D. You have to pay for a policeman to patrol your area. 62. The last paragraph stresses the importance of______________. A. keeping homes safe B. being on one's guard C. neighborhood teamwork D. informing everyone of the danger C For many years, machines have been doing work that people once did, including some difficult jobs. Search and rescue operations in dangerous environments are often seen as the first areas that will employ high technology robots. But there is another area where they may soon take jobs traditionally held by human beings: the restaurant industry. Teams from around the world competed in early June at the DARPA Robotic Challenge Finals in California. A team from South Korea and its robot, called DRC-Hubo, won the first place in the competition. The second and third place winners were from the United States. The robots were required to drive a vehicle, climb up steps and do mechanical work. Such activities are easy for humans to do,but more difficult for machines. Not all of the competitors were successful. The failures showed how difficult it is to design effective walking machines. Recently, crowds gathered for the food machinery and technology show in Tokyo, Japan. They witnessed a robot preparing food. Other machines cooked, baked tasty cakes and even made sushi (寿司). Akihiro Suzuki works at Yaskawa Electirc, a company that develops robots. He says robots cannot do everything a human can, but they are able to work without becoming tired and if a food can be easily prepared, a robot can repeat the same movement to reproduce the same meal. People all over the world now eat sushi, but there are not enough skilled workers to prepare it. Perhaps in the near future, robots can help anyone make sushi. You can enjoy films and TV series comfortably on the sofa while the robot is busy preparing delicious food for you. 63. In Paragraph 1,the author tells us______. A. robots are widely used in our life B. robots just do difficult jobs C. robots are sometimes dangerous D. robots are gradually replacing humans 64. Which of the following may Akihiro Suzuki disagree? A. Robots can’t do everything in place of man. B. Robots can’t feel tired at work. C. Robots can do the same movement again. D. Robots can produce different meals. 65. What can we infer from the passage? A. High technology robots are in great demand for some jobs. B. The robots can drive a car more easily than a human. C. Some robots have taken a lot of jobs in the restaurant industry. D. Robots are likely to be the food-makers for man in the future. 66. In which column can we probably see the text? A. Education. B. Science. C. Culture. D. Health. D Each year the Pritzker Architecture Prize (普利兹克建筑奖)goes to a star designer with a long list of attractive buildings around the world. This year’s winner is a little different. Shigeru Ban has designed museums, homes and concert halls. But Ban is best known for a more simple kind of work: the temporary buildings for people who became homeless after disasters. Ban may be the only designer in the world who makes buildings out of paper - cardboard paper tubes (管). Ban actually tested the strength of cardboard tubes, and said he was surprised by what he had discovered. He has used them to build temporary buildings in Japan, Haiti, China and elsewhere. “After a disaster, the building material is going to be more expensive, Ban explains. “But the paper tube is actually not a building material. It is cheap and plentiful. We can get the material easily anywhere. And unlike costs for traditional building materials, the price of paper tubes doesn’t jump after an earthquake or flood. The tubes are also lightweight, so you don’t need heavy machines to work with them. Ban started using cardboard paper tubes in the 1980s. At that time he had just graduated from the architecture school, and he was looking for a cheap substitute for wood. So he started reusing the paper cardboard tubes that were left over from rolls of paper in his office. Ban was born in Tokyo and studied architecture in the U.S. before moving back to Japan to start his practice. Some of Ban’s temporary buildings have become permanent, like the paper church he built after the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan. 67. The author uses the first paragraph to ______________. A. raise an argument B. give an example C. give an introduction D. offer a description 68. What is special about Shigeru Ban? A. He is good at building houses for homeless people. B. He failed to get this year’s architecture prize. C. He graduated from the best architecture school in the U.S. D. He has designed museums, homes and concert halls. 69. Why did Shigeru Ban choose cardboard paper tubes? A. Because they are strong and last for a long time. B. Because they are cheap and easy to take away. C. Because they are plentiful and look very beautiful. D. Because they are common and hard to break. 70. What does the underlined word “substitute probably refer to? A. A new way of building houses by using wood. B. A new method of producing cardboard paper tubes. C. A new machine to produce a new kind of building material. D. Some of us are upset about their figures and looks. Personally, I argue that it is one's inner beauty that really matters, which is why we needn't care about them. When we are misunderstood by our teachers, parents or even classmates, we can find a proper time to have a heart-to-heart talk with them because communication is the best way to remove misunderstandings. Some of us complain they have few true friends. It is certain that being open-minded and ready to help others will help to gain popularity among peers. As is often the case, we may fall behind others, faced with great pressure. In order to get rid of this problem, we may turn to the teachers for help. Besides, some of us don't have much pocket money, feeling unhappy. As for me, we are supposed to form the habit of saving, as saving is a good virtue of the Chinese. That's all. Thank you. Text 1 M:Hi, Mary. They can also earn some money in this way. Many teenagers said that making their own money gave them a sense of pride and freedom. American teenagers are allowed to do part-time jobs from 14. On weekdays, they may go to work a few times after school. They usually work longer on weekends. In summer, American teenagers are excited if they could find part-time jobs at camps, swimming pools and amusement parks. These jobs can bring them too much fun. Some of the most stressful jobs include teaching, nursing, and police work. But these jobs can be useful for their future. When they grow up, the students with work experience are more likely to succeed than those without work experience. A popular job for many teenagers is babysitting, and they can start before the age of 14. What they do is to stay in the house and make sure the kids are okay. At the same time, they can do their homework, watch TV, or talk on the phone with friends.查看更多
