"Football, tennis, cricket--- anything with a round ball, I was useless," he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire‎, ‎England.‎ It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set up his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon. ‎ The following year he met John Ridgway and was hired as an instructor at Ridgway's school of adventure in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway's cold-water exploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, the decided that this would be his future. ‎ In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long-distance adventure towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite, ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his supply-loaded sled up and over rocky rice. ‎ Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he's skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe the change. ‎ Next October, Saunders, 27, heads south from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, a 2900-kilometer journey that has never been completed on skis. ‎ ‎21. In an editorial released Monday in the American Journal of Public Health, Katherine Record and Bryn Austin made their case for government regulation of the fashion industry. The average international runway model has a body mass index (BMI) under 16-low enough to indicate starvation by the World Health Organization's standard. And Record and Austin are worried not just about the models themselves, but about the vast number of girls and women their images influence. "Especially girls and teens", says Record. "Seventy percent of girls aged 10 to 18 reports that they define perfect body image based on what they see in magazines." That's especially worrying, she says, given that anorexia(厌食症)results in more deaths than does any other mental illness, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Record's suggestion is to prohibit agents from hiring models with a BMI below 18.In April, France passed a law setting lower limits for a model's weight. Agents and fashion houses who hire models with BMI under 18 could pay $‎82,000 in fines and spend up to 6 months in jail. Regulating the fashion industry in the United States won't be easy, Record says. But with the new rules in France, U.S.‎ support could make a difference. "A designer can't survive without participating in Paris Fashion Week", she says, adding, "Our argument is that the same would be true of New York Fashion ‎ Week." 24. What do Record and Austin say about fashion models' body mass?‎ A. It has caused needless controversy.(争议) B. It is focus of the modeling business. C. It is but a matter of personal taste. D. It affects models' health and safety. 25. What are Record and Austin advocating(倡议) in the Monday editorial?‎ A. A change in the public's view of female beauty.‎ B. Government legislation about models' weight.‎ C. Elimination(消除) of forced weight loss by models.‎ D. Prohibition(禁止) of models eating non-food stuff.‎ ‎26. Which of the following statements is true? A. Low BMI of models doesn’t have great influence on vast number of girls and women. B. Models with a higher BMI in France will be favored by the public. C. France allows girls with BMI over 18 on the runway. D. New York Fashion Week will do better than Paris Fashion Week. ‎ C We love the sea. We swim into it, live near it, build beside it, and even imagine about living under the sea. But we’re terrified of it, too. For much of our history, we have turned to “hard engineering” to control the marine (海洋) environment and manage its influence on us. We build dams, sea walls and channels. But all these efforts seem to fail. The sea has a habit of taking back its own. And we suffer.‎ Johnston, a marine ecologist, is advocating for “blue engineering” — the marine version of the “green engineering” movement on land that has seen nations like Singapore building the walls and roofs of the concrete jungle with plant life.‎ We are expanding further into the marine environment. This action does harm lo marine ecosystems. We’re loving the sea to death, but we’ve not been thinking about design of structures (建筑物) with respect to ecology. Some coastal structures create shade, which reduces the growth of seaweed. Bright lights at night confuse species such as turtles. That’s why blue engineering comes in.‎ Throughout the world people are starting to turn things around. Researchers with the World Harbour Project are creating tiles (瓦片) similar to the natural structures found on rocky shores with 3D printing technology. These make more attractive homes for marine creatures. Researchers ‎ are also actively seeding these tiles with local seaweeds and creatures such as the Sydney rock oyster, which is particularly good at improving water quality. Twelve harbours around the world are taking part in this marine tile experiment, each working with their own unique marine life.‎ It’s far from the days when huge number of old tyres were thrown into the sea to build “artificial reef” (礁石). Those clumsy early attempts are now costing millions to remove, showing just how far we have yet to go in understanding how best to deal with the underwater world.‎ ‎27. What do we know about “hard engineering”?‎ A. It has improved sea environment. B. It can control the influence of sea.‎ C. It has failed to achieve its purpose. D. It makes living under sea impossible.‎ ‎28. Para.3 is mainly about the to introduce the project of “blue engineering”.‎ A. drawbacks B. reasons C. procedures D. measures ‎29 Which of the following is a form of “blue engineering”?‎ A. Constructing buildings with plant life. B. Expanding into marine environments.‎ C. Creating an artificial reef with old tyres. D. Building structures benefiting sea creatures.‎ ‎30. What is the writer’s feeling towards the present situation of marine environment?‎ A. Relieved B. Doubtful C. Satisfied D. Disappointed 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。答案请写在答卷纸上。‎ Hollywood‎ movies are regularly filled with sex and violence. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊)through the smoke.‎ They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.‎ Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik, Malay for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas(睡衣;宽长裤)—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.‎ ‎“She might have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. “I know Makcik’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. Do you have some change? I have to make a call on the pay phone. ‎ W: Pay phone? You can use my mobile phone. Here you are. (1)‎ Text 2 ‎ W: I’d like to visit you tomorrow morning. Will you have any spare time then?‎ M: Not in the morning, I’m afraid, but I’ll be free before one thirty after lunch. (2)‎ Text 3 ‎ W: Are you going to the library after our class, Jack?‎ M: No, I’m going to play some sports. How about you?‎ W: I feel like going to the meeting hall for a lecture. (3)‎ Text 4‎ M: I wish I could play the piano. I am fond of some piano pieces by Mozart, but unfortunately, I can’t play them. Can you play the piano, Susan?‎ W: I can play the piano and the violin. (4)‎ Text 5‎ W: Listen, there’s a new show at the Metropolitan‎ ‎Museum this Saturday. I was wondering if you would like to go with me.‎ M: I’d love to. I read about that show in the paper this morning. And I was just thinking about going this week. (5)‎ Text 6‎ M: Can I help you, madam?‎ W: Yes. I bought this jacket here last week. I wore it once, and now look at it. I was hoping to get my money back. (6)‎ M: Do you have your bill list? ‎ W: Yes, it’s right here. ‎ M: Thanks. I’m wondering whether you washed it with any other clothing, or whether you washed it in hot water, perhaps.‎ W: No, I washed it in cold water, just like it says in the instructions. ‎ M: I see. Perhaps something is wrong with your washing machine. ‎ W: Sir, I’m actually a fashion designer. I’ve been making my own clothes for fifteen years. (7) I have never seen a piece of clothing look like this after washing it only once…unless there is a problem with the cloth. I’d be happy to speak with your manager.‎ M: No, that’s all right, madam. I’ll do what you asked for. ‎ Text 7‎ W: Good morning, we have checked your information. Do you have any special requirements for your host family? (8)‎ M: Yeah, I hope to find a host family near my college. (9) That will be more convenient for my education.‎ W: That’s reasonable. Well, where is your college?‎ M: It’s on the south side of town.‎ W: OK. Let me see. Can you afford that?‎ M: That sounds good. Can you help me get in touch with this family? (8)‎ W: Sure. We’ll call them and inform you at once if we get a response from them. I think there is a special discount for members; you can see my VIP number on my ID card. ‎ M: Yes, we give our members 20% off, (12) and I see your number right here. All right. Please remember that your room number is 2160. Here is your key. You’d better keep it with you at all times. (13)‎ W: Got it. Thank you very much. ‎ Text 9 (第17题为推断题)‎ M: We need some more supplies from the basement. Can you go downstairs and get some white paper, some black pens, and some stamps, please? ‎ W: Sure, Mr. Harper. Oh, I just remembered. The printer is out of ink, and I think we ran out of it in the storage area. (14) Do you want me to order some more online? (15)‎ M: Well, I don’t think they’ll be able to get it here on time. Their prices are the lowest around, (15) but it usually takes them one full business day to deliver anything. We can’t afford to delay our work today. ‎ W: What should I do?‎ M: Just go to Staples and get some ink there. ‎ W: No problem, sir. Should I use the company credit card like usual?‎ M: Yes, that’s fine. Make sure the finance department gets a copy of the receipt when you come back. (16) And after that, please place an ink order online for delivery tomorrow.‎ W: Of course. Is it all right if I just take my lunch break while I’m out? That way, I won’t have to come back to the office, then leave, and then come back again.‎ M: Sure, that’s fine. Well, I’ve got a meeting at 10:00. They have started a special day called “Buy Nothing Day”. They don’t want anyone to go shopping on that day. “Buy Nothing Day” is November 29. It’s after Thanksgiving, and it’s often the first day of Christmas shopping. (18) The idea of “Buy Nothing Day” started in Vancouver, a Canadian city. (19) Now people all over the world celebrate “Buy Nothing Day”. In California, parents and children get together to read stories, sing songs, and paint pictures. This year, in Manchester‎, ‎England, people dressed up to tell people that we buy too much. In Albuquerque‎, ‎New Mexico, high school students wanted to tell other students about “Buy Nothing Day”. They organized a spaghetti dinner to give people information about “Buy Nothing Day”. They asked restaurants in the neighborhood to give people food for free.
