The couple had decided that instead of hosting their friends and family for a traditional feast reception, they would feed the victims from an earthquake-stricken area. The idea came from the bridegroom's father, Ted, who volunteers for a Turkish relief organization. For the past few years, the organization has distributed daily meals to thousands of people who've suffered from natural disasters. He approached a representative of the organization and suggested that the family cover part of the costs of feeding them for the day. Then he told his son, who was surprised by the suggestion, but soon won over. When he told that to the bride, she was really shocked but finally accepted because in southeastern Turkey there is a real culture of sharing with people in need. They love to share their food, their table and everything they have. And afterwards she was quite amazed about it. So, they arrived at the distribution center on Thursday to spend the day serving food and taking photographs with their grateful recipients (接受者) . On Tuesday evening, the newly married couple were still pleased with their decision to quit a personal celebration for one with a greater good. “It's like sharing a dinner with your friends and family who have this kind of thing on a daily basis or sharing something with people who don't even have the most basic things,” Michael said. “Hopefully, this will also give the start for other wedding dinners to be held here with our brothers and sisters in need.” 56.Why did so many people crowd in Kilis? A. To attend Michael and Linda's wedding. B. To escape the damaging earthquake. C. To support the organization. D. To help distribute free daily meals. 57.How did the couple celebrate their wedding? A. They treated their friends and relatives to a big dinner. B. They afforded the entire cost of the day for feeding victims. C. They shared their happiness with the homeless in Kilis. D. A. consulted with B. moved towards C. came across D. took in 59.We can know from the text that_______. A. Michael doubted if more new couples would follow him B. Kilis is a place which lies in southeastern Turkey B NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A line of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes marched across the South on Friday, peeling away roofs, overturning cars and killing at least 11 people in Tennessee, officials said. It was the second wave of violent weather to hit the state in less than a week. Last weekend, tornadoes killed 24 people in the western part of the state and destroyed more than 1,000 homes and buildings. The storms crossed an area from northern Mississippi to northern Virginia as they moved to the northeast late Friday after developing from a low-pressure system in the central Plains. The Nashville suburbs were the hardest hit, with at least eight deaths happening northeast of the city. Three more people were killed in a rural area about 65 miles southeast of Nashville. Tornadoes were also reported in some other places. The storms pulled up trees, knocked down power lines and damaged buildings. What’s worse, phone lines and most businesses were out of service. Hospitals admitted at least 60 people with storm-related injuries and transferred at least nine badly injured patients to Nashville hospitals. In southern Indiana, the storms damaged some areas with golf ball-sized hail. High winds blew the roof off a country club and overthrew a semitrailer(拖车). As the storms moved farther east, parts of West Virginia were lashed with heavy rain and winds, great damages caused. The number of tornadoes in the US has jumped through the first part of 2006 compared with the past few years. Through the end of March, an estimated 286 tornadoes had hit the US, compared with an average of 70 for the same three-month period in each of the past three years. The number of tornado-related deaths was 38 before Friday's storms. The average number of deaths from 2003 to 2005 was 45 a year, the prediction center said. 60.How many deaths have the thunderstorms and tornadoes on Friday caused? A. Three. B. Eight. C. Eleven. D. So when our newly-acquainted (新认识的)Western friends reach out in preparation for a hug, some of us feel embarrassed. Many questions go through our head. Where should I put my arms? Under their armpits or around their neck? What distance should I keep? Should our chests touch? It’s even more difficult with friends from some European countries. Should I kiss them on the cheek while hugging? Which side? Or is it both cheeks? Which side should I start on? But it isn’t just people from cultures that are conservative (保守的) in expressing physical contact who find hugging confusing. Hugs can cause discomfort or even pain in people who value their personal space. In a recent article for The Wall Street Journal, US psychologist Peggy Drexler said that although the US remains a “medium touch” culture, Americans do seem to be hugging more. From politicians to celebrities, hugs are given to friends, strangers and enemies alike; whether they are willing or not; and the public has been quick to pick up the practice. Public figures know that nothing expresses likeability (亲和力) like a good hug. US First Lady Michelle Obama has put her arms around icy foreign leaders like Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and the Queen of England on the latter occasion actually breaking the rule of royal manners. But not all are grateful to be hugged, even by the most influential and famous. To them, any hug is offensive (冒犯的) if it’s not sincere. Amanda Hess, writing for US magazine Slate, says public figures should stop imposing(强加) hugs on everyone they meet. For them, a hug is rarely a gesture of sincere fellowship, compassion or love. It’s all part of a show. Hugs are falsely intimate power plays used by public figures to establish their social dominance(主导) over those in their grasp. Cecilia Walden, a British journalist writing for The Telegraph who lives in New York, holds the same opinion. “Power-hugging”, as she calls it, is “an offender dressed up as kindness”. It has become a fashion in the US where “bosses are already embracing their staff (either shortly before or after firing them), men and women ,their friends or enemies, in a thousand cheating displays of unity”. 67. From the first third paragraphs, we can see that_______. A. we Chinese people don’t know how to hug B. hugs can bring pressure to people when used improperly C. people from European countries often get puzzled about hugging D. people in Western countries seldom use hugs to express their physical closeness 68. The example of US first lady Michelle Obama is given to show that _______. A. hugs are forbidden in England B. she is much liked by American people C. Americans hold a “medium touch” culture D. public figures know hugging functions well in public 69. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined phrase “pick up the practice”? A. Follow the trend. B. Enjoy the medium touch culture. C. Give hugs to enemies. D. Resist physical touch. 70. What can be the best title of this passage? A. Hugs, Tricky Affair? B. Hugs, Vital or Not?
