But when a stranger received the misaddressed mail, she didn’t just throw it in the garbage like many people would have done. Instead, she returned the invitation, along with a sweet note and $20 as a wedding present.‎ The sender also wrote “Live long and prosper” on the corner of the card---words from “Star Trek”, probably because the young couple’s wedding invitation shows Jesse holding a light knife from “Star Wars” and Cassie holding a wand (魔杖) in a nod to the “Harry Potter” books.‎ The generous stranger also included $20, probably as a little gift for the wedding. The young couple put the money to good use by going out to dinner with a friend who wouldn’t be able to attend the wedding.‎ Warren said that she was at first confused by the returned wedding invitation. “But after I saw the note,‎ ‎ I was just surprised and blessed that she/he would do that for a stranger,” Warren said. “Jesse was confused at first, too --he wondered why someone had sent us money, then I read the message to him, and he was shocked and grateful.”‎ Warren and Jones still don’t know the name of the kind stranger, but Warren sent a thank-you note to the same address to let the sender know how much her/his generosity was appreciated. The young couple plan to marry in June and thanks to the kindness of a stranger, their marriage is already off to a sweet start.‎ ‎24. What caused the story to happen?‎ A. A stranger’s honesty. B. What can be the best title for the text?‎ A. A Sweet Wedding B. A Kind Neighbor C. Stranger’s Kindness D. A Happy Young Couple ‎ C Imagine yourself on a boat looking out at the horizon and all you can see is the water meeting the sky with no land in sight and you are sailing straight ahead to meet the world. Jesse Martin does not have to imagine: he is living in it. ‎ On Dec. 7, 1998, at 17 years old, Jesse set sail from Melbourne, Australia on his boat, attempting to become the youngest person to sail alone and nonstop around the world. He sailed south of New Zealand, through the South Pacific, around South America, north on the Atlantic, back south past Africa, through the Indian Ocean and back to Melbourne. Even as a young child, Jesse had been an adventurer who traveled all over Europe and Asia with his parents. Born in Munich, Germany in 1981, he moved to Australia with his family when he was only two years old. They moved close to a rainforest in Cow Bay, about 3,500kms north of Melbourne, where they built a small house with no electricity or running water. Jesse grew up at the beach enjoying the outdoors to its fullest. At 14, he sailed for the first time with his father and brother, Beau. It was after this trip that he began to dream about sailing around the world. ‎ Jesse’s family played an important role. “I was made to believe I could do anything, although there were others that were not so encouraging or supportive” he says. “People that I looked up to, respected and trusted told me I couldn’t. Thankfully, I trusted myself. There were people that said that the boat couldn’t be ready by the time I had to leave.” However, through perseverance(坚持不懈) and belief in himself, he was able to do what many told him was impossible. ‎ On Oct.31, 1999, more than 10 months after he set sail, Jesse Martin went down in history as the youngest person to sail around the world alone, nonstop and unassisted.‎ ‎28. By encouraging readers to imagine a sailing experience, the author wants to __________.‎ A. show how difficult it is to be a sailor B. describe what Jesse’s sailing is like C. show how wonderful Jesse’s life is D. describe what a sailor’s life is like ‎29. What can you know from paragraph 2?‎ A. Jesse was the first person who had sailed alone around the world.‎ B. Jesse traveled all over Europe and Asia with his parents when he was 17.‎ C. Jesse was born in Melbourne and grew up at the beach.‎ D. Jesse grew up in a small house with no electricity or running water.‎ ‎30. What made Jesse decide to sail alone around the world according to the passage?‎ A. His childhood adventure experiences. B. His journeys to Europe.‎ C. His love for outdoor activities. D. His first sailing trip with his family.‎ ‎31. What can we learn from Jesse Martin’s story?‎ A. Life is an unusual adventure we should enjoy. B. Failure is the mother of success.‎ C. A strong belief will make a person stronger. D. Great interest contributes to success. ‎ D ‎ The Lifecycle of a T-shirt We all probably have a lot of T-shirts, but do you ever stop and think about the influence of a T-shirt on the planet? You’d probably be surprised to learn what's involved in the lifecycle of just one T-shirt.‎ There are 5 major stages: material, production, shipping, use and disposal. The material stage involves farming, irrigating, fertilizing, harvesting and ginning. While cotton is a natural fiber and not as harmful to the environment as manmade fibers, it still takes a toll in the material and production stages. Commercial cotton farming uses a large amount of water, and the use of pesticides (杀虫剂)is widespread across the globe, especially in cotton farming. Studies have shown that farmers spend around $4.1 billion on ‎ pesticides annually, of which 25% was spent on cotton crops in the US.‎ Once the cotton is grown and harvested, so begins the production stage: spinning, knitting, bleaching, dyeing, cutting, sewing, etc.——these processes also use a great deal of water and energy. Commercial dyes and bleaches are harmful pollutants and can eventually pollute groundwater. ‎ After the T-shirt is produced, it enters the transportation stage. This often involves overseas shipping. Take a look in your closet. Chances are that most of your cotton garments (衣服)are made in China or India. Garments can be shipped via plane, ship or truck…,all of which spill CO2 into the atmosphere. Calculations show that C02 emissions from light trucks alone amount to 1.15 pounds per mile.‎ Once the T-shirt reaches the retail market, it is purchased. This stage may seem like the leastenvironmentally damaging part. But consider the number of times you’ve washed and dried your favorite T-shirt. Washing machines are certainly becoming more efficient. However, the average American household does 400 loads of laundry per year, using about 40 gallons of water per load. Such excessive water use is combined with the large amount of energy used by dryers.‎ The final stage of life is disposal. This releases harmful emissions, or involves a landfill where cotton takes years to break down. Current US records show that an estimated 15% of clothes and shoes are recycled, which means that consumers send a shocking 85% of these materials to landfills.‎ We all need new clothes every once in a while, but let’s all try to keep in mind what goes into the production of clothing... It has a real impact on the planet.‎ There are a lot of things you can do to help reduce your impact. Reuse and recycle clothes. If they’re too worn out to wear, cut them up and use them as cleaning rags. Donate them to charity or another organization that recycles textiles. When possible, make an effort to buy organic cotton. Turn down the thermostat on your washer, and line dry your clothes when the weather will allow it.‎ ‎32. What can be inferred from this passage?‎ A. The production process may affect water safety.‎ B.The clothing cost is relatively low in China and India.‎ C. Cotton clothes are buried because they are hard to break down.‎ D. The use stage is the least environmentally harmful of the five stages.‎ ‎33. We can learn from the passage that in the US .‎ A. pesticides in cotton farming cost over 4 billion dollars every year B. C02 emissions of land transport amount to 1.15 pounds per mile C. about 15% of the clothes and shoes are made of materials that are recycled D. about 16, 000 gallons of water is used annually by an average family on laundry ‎34. The underlined phrase “takes a toll” probably means “”.‎ A. wastes water B. has a bad effect C. uses energy D. takes a lot of time ‎35. What is the purpose of this article?‎ A. To encourage people to donate clothes to charity.‎ B. To introduce the five stages in the lifecycle of clothing.‎ C. To persuade people to purchase more organic cotton.‎ D. To promote eco-friendly actions related to clothes.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ NBA basketball players devote much of their lives to preparing for games.
