Like most English children, I learned French at school. I had often been to France, so I was used to speaking a foreign language to people who didn’t understand French. But when I went to America, I was really looking forward to having a nice and easy holiday without any language problems. How wrong I was! The misunderstandings began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to give my American friend Daisy a call and tell her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking lost and asked if he could help me. "Yes, "I said, "I want to give my friend a ring. " "Well, that's nice, "he said. "Are you getting married? But aren't you a bit young?" "Who is talking about marriage?" I replied. "I only want to give my friend a ring to tell her I've arrived. Can you tell me where a phone box is ?" "Oh! "he said. "There's a phone downstairs. " When at last we met, Daisy explained the misunderstanding to me. "Don't worry, "she said to me. "I had so many difficulties at first. There are lots of words which the Americans use differently in meaning from the British. You' ll soon get used to all the funny things they say. Most of the time, British and American people understand each other!" 24.Where was the writer from?‎ A. France. B. England. C. America. D. China.‎ ‎25.The writer thought ________in America. From the text we can see that “give somebody a ring”_________.‎ A. refers to “call one’s name‘ring’ ”‎ B. means “be going to marry somebody”‎ C. means the same in America as in England ‎ D. has different meanings between American people and English people C Scientists worked out a long time ago that the lifespan(寿命) of animals is mostly related to their size. Bigger animals usually live longer than smaller animals.‎ The main reason people used to think big animals live longer is because of something called metabolic rates(代谢率). A metabolic rate is like how much petrol a car uses -- cars that use up ‎ their petrol more slowly can drive for longer, a bit like animals with lower metabolic rates. Smaller animals usually have higher metabolic rates, which lead to shorter lifespans.‎ The problem is that this doesn't work for all animals. Some parrots have high metabolic rates but can live for more than 80 years! A metabolic rate is related to heart rate, and some parrots have a heart rate of 600 beats per minute. And dogs are one of the animals that do not follow this rule. A 70kg dog is lucky to reach seven years, but a 4kg one can live for 10 years or more. We still don’t really know why this happens.‎ People now think it might depend on the "evolutionary pressures(进化压力)" that each animal faces. An evolutionary pressure includes things like other animals that want to kill smaller ones for food. Because they are so big, large animals like elephants and whales are less likely to be attacked in the wild than small animals like mice.‎ There is a lot of scientific research on why dogs age and how to help them live longer. This is partly because we love dogs, and partly because learning about them can help us figure out how humans can live longer too. Dogs suffer from the same kinds of problems that people do as they get older, including getting fat and having painful joints. Maybe one day in the future our dogs will live as long as we do.‎ ‎28. How is Paragraph 2 developed?‎ A. By showing experiment results B. By making a comparison C. By giving figures D. By explaining cause and effect ‎29. What do the underlined words “this rule” in Paragraph 3 refer to?‎ ‎ A. A larger dog hunts for its food more easily B. A larger dog is luckier than a smaller one C. Some animals have high metabolic rates ‎ D. The lifespan of animals is mostly related to their size ‎30. What may be one of animals’ “evolutionary pressures”?‎ ‎ A. The lifespan B. The metabolic rates ‎ C. The human’s protection D. The chance of being killed for food ‎31. What can be the best title for the text?‎ ‎ A. How can we help dogs live longer?‎ ‎ B. Why don’t dogs live as long as humans?‎ ‎ C. How is animals’ lifespan usually related to body size?‎ D. Why are large animals less likely to be attacked?‎ ‎ D Many people who are lonely end up in a negative kind of behavior. Despite feeling alone, they stay away from social interaction(互动) because they are afraid of being refused by friends and strangers.‎ Now a researching team at Chicago University has found what causes people to feel lonely. And they say there are four steps, known as the ”Ease method”, which can help people get over ‎ their loneliness.‎ ‎1. Make your circle larger. This means accepting social invitations even if you don’t feel like it. You cannot connect if you isolate(使……独处) yourself ----- or if you only connect online where many people present a non-realistic self.‎ ‎2. Get an action plan. You should realize that you are not a passive victim(被动受害者),that you do have some control, and that you can change your situation by changing thoughts, expectations, and behaviors toward others. Researchers recommend mapping your social life out on your calendar, and creating events so that others can join you.‎ ‎3. Choice. Researchers suggest you should choose the people you plan to be together with, that is, spending time with those who have things in common with you, in order to develop meaningful connections.‎ ‎4. Expect the best. ‎ Warmth and goodwill on one person’s part is more likely to produce warmth and goodwill from other people. Expecting the best in any situation can help achieve this and bring you out of loneliness.‎ Researchers argue that it’s important for people who feel lonely to be aware that their brains are making them more alert(警觉的) to the unfamiliar environment, and take control of their behavior. They say it is helpful to push their life further to more situations, where new friends with the same interests will be made and loneliness will be finally got over. ‎ ‎32.What is the main idea about the text?‎ A. Loneliness is a negative kind of behavior.‎ B. Researchers discovered what caused loneliness.‎ C. Researchers gave advice on how to get over loneliness D. Social interaction has nothing to do with loneliness ‎33. What can we infer from the text?‎ A. Online connections can’t really get rid of loneliness.‎ B. Online connections help us understand others better.‎ C. You should accept social invitations without choice.‎ D. Goodwill and warmth can’t bring back the same thing.‎ ‎34. Why is it important for us to choose people having something in common? ‎ ‎ A. They can face threat and difficulty together.‎ ‎ B. They can develop meaningful social interaction.‎ ‎ C. They can offer each other different views.‎ ‎ D. They can live together happily.‎ ‎35. If you want to get over loneliness, you should be _________.‎ ‎ A. careful B. active C. crazy D. fair 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ An apology(道歉) tells someone that we are sorry for the hurt we caused even if we didn’t do ‎ it on purpose. ‎ Why apologize? ‎ Apologizes are one of the tools that we use to build good friendships and relationships. When you say “I am sorry” (and really mean it), it’s because you probably feel bad that something you did or said hurt another person. 36 You are also saying that you respect the other person and you care about his or her feelings. After apologizing, you might feel a little better. 37 When you apologize in caring way, you can feel good because you are trying to make things right again.‎ ‎ Does apologizing fix everything?‎ ‎ 38 Other times, it might take a while for someone to get past feeling upset. You may need to give the other person some time. Even after you say you are sorry, you might still feel bad about what you said or did. 39 You are making up your mind to do better.‎ ‎ What if you have been hurt? ‎ When someone apologizes to you, you may welcome it. But if a person keeps hurting you and apologizing without making an effort to change, you may not want to make friends with him. 40 It’s polite to accept an apology, but anything more is up to you! ‎ A. Saying you’re sorry is more than just words. ‎ B. The other person will probably feel better, too. ‎ C. It’s always easy to get along with other people. ‎ D. Everyone needs to apologize when they do something wrong.‎ E. But you can feel good about apologizing or fixing the mistake. ‎ F. Sometimes a heartfelt “I am sorry” fixes everything right away. ‎ G. Just because someone apologizes, it doesn’t mean you have to be friends. ‎ One day I came home, and I was upset.
