I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was ,in his words, “a wonderfully written book ”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all .I felt that I was talking to a book liar.‎ And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t .In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty(愧疚的) Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9.The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out ),I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten .But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one ,George Orwell’s 1984.I think it’s really brilliant.‎ The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either ) and Herman Melville.‎ Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in –depth!‎ But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J.k. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I’ll come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).‎ ‎24. How did the author think of Dreams From My Father?‎ ‎ A. It was his favorite. B. It made little sense. ‎ ‎ C . He was very fond of it. D. He totally had no idea.‎ ‎25. What can we learn from “Report on Guilty Secrets”?‎ ‎ A. 58% of people haven’t read 1984. ‎ ‎ B. All of the listed authors are unknown.‎ C. Many people have ever lied about reading. ‎ D. Dreams From My Father isn’t among the top ten.‎ ‎26. Why do people probably lie about reading?‎ ‎ A. To admire the writer. B. To advertise the book. ‎ ‎ C. To start a conversation. D. To leave a good impression.‎ ‎27. What’s the tone (语气) of the author in the article?‎ ‎ A. Very friendly B. A little humorous C. Rather confusing D. Quite cautious ‎ C ‎ When we are young we are taught that it’s wrong to lie and we should always tell the truth. Unfortunately, most children lie even if they are told not to. Research carried out at the institute of child study at Toronto‎ ‎University has shown that this might not be such a bad thing. Apparently (显然地), children who tell lies when they’re two years old have a good chance of becoming successful adults.‎ According to the research, at the age of two, 20 percent of children lie. At the age of three, 50 percent lie, and at four almost 90 percent lie. By the age of 12 almost every child tell lies.‎ Lying needs much brain work, and the better the lie is, the more work the brains has to do. By training the brain early, researchers believe children will be able to think more clearly when they are adults.‎ Recent research, carried out by the Science Museum in London, has shown some interesting facts about the way we lie as adults. According to the research, the average British man tells three lies every day; that’s over 1000 lies a year. However, the average woman apparently only lies twice a day. ‎ Most people think women are better liars than men although in fact they tell fewer lies. Popular women’s lies include “Nothing’s wrong, I’m fine.” “I don’t know where it is; I haven’t touched it.” and “It wasn’t that expensive”.‎ Some people say you can lie as long as it’s a white lie. A white lie is a lie told to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. One of the most common lies for both men and women is “It’s just what I’ve always wanted”, said after opening a present from their partner.‎ ‎28. What will happen to young children who lie?‎ A. They will possibly do wrong later.‎ B. They’re likely to succeed in the future.‎ C. They will keep lying when they grow up.‎ D. They may have a good chance of losing other’s trust.‎ ‎29. What do the numbers in Para 2 show about children?‎ A. Older children tell bigger lies than younger ones.‎ B. As they grow, they often lie about their age.‎ C. The older they grow, the more likely they lie.‎ D. It’s quite natural for them to tell lies.‎ ‎30. What did the research by the Science‎ ‎Museum find out?‎ A. Men lie more than women. B. Women are better liars than men.‎ C. Women’s lies ate usually most serious. D. Men sometimes have to lie to women.‎ ‎31. What’s the true feeling behind the underlined part in the last paragraph?‎ A. You know me so well. B. I don’t like the present.‎ C. You are good at picking presents. D. I haven’t received a present I really like.‎ ‎ D ‎ Bad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering ‎ new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.    “The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University‎ of ‎Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.”    Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a colleague analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.    Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.”  32 .What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to? A. Research papers.     B. News reports C .Private e-mails.    D. Daily conversations.‎ ‎33. What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer? A. They’re socially inactive. B. They’re good at telling stories. C. They’re careful with their words. D. They’re inconsiderate of others.‎ ‎34. Which tended to be the most e-mailed according to Dr. Berger’s research? A. Sports news.        B. Personal accounts. C. Science articles.  D. Financial reviews.‎ ‎35 .What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Good News Beats Bad on Social Networks B .Online News Attracts More People C. Reading Habits Change with the Times D. Sad Stories Travel Far and Wide 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据对话内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ Everyone knows that fish is good for health. 36 But it seems that many people don’t cook fish at home. Americans eat only about fifteen pounds of fish per person per year, but we eat twice as much fish in restaurants as at home. Buying, storing, and cooking fish isn’t difficult. 37 This text is about how to buy and cook fish in an easy way.‎ ‎ 38 Fresh fish should smell sweet: you should feel that you’re standing at the ocean’s edge. Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn’t fresh. 39 When you have bought a fish and arrive home, you’d better store the fish in the refrigerator if you don’t cook it immediately, but fresh fish should be stored in your fridge for only a day or two. Frozen fish isn’t as tasty as the fresh one.‎ ‎ There are many common methods used to cook fish.   40  First, clean it and season it with ‎ your choice of spices(调料). Put the whole fish on a plate and steam it in a steam pot for 8 to 10 ‎ minutes if it weighs about one pound. (A larger one will take more time.) Then, it’s ready to serve.‎ A. Do not buy it. B. The easiest is to steam it. C. This is how you can do it. D. It just requires a little knowledge. E. The fish will go bad within hours. F. When buying fish, you should first smell it. G. The fats in fish are thought to help prevent heart disease.‎ 第三部分: 英语知识运用 (共两节, 满分45 分)‎ ‎ 第一节:完形填空 (共20 小题;每小题1.5 分,满分30分)‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Last year I ruined my summer vacation by bringing along a modern convenience: the iPad.‎ Instead of looking at nature, I 41 my e-mail.
