A big bird is in danger. The bird is the California condor(神鹰), a vulture. A vulture is a large bird that eats the dead animals it finds. The condor is nearly as big and fast as a small airplane. But you may never see it in the sky. Not enough young birds are hatching to take the place of the old birds that die. When an animal dies out completely, or disappears from the earth, it is extinct. The condor is in danger of extinction for many reasons. People have built cities where the condors used to live. The condors are having trouble finding food. The birds sometimes get sick. When they do, they cannot hatch young birds. Some people would like to help the condor. They have captured the 26 condors still on Earth. The condors were taken to two zoos in California. In the zoos, they can live safely and hatch young birds. When there are 200 condors they will be moved to a safe new home in the mountains. 21. An animal is extinct if it _______. The biggest danger to condors comes from _______. A. wild animals B. other birds C. people D. dead animals B The kings of ancient Egypt planned strong tombs to keep their bodies safe after death and to hold their treasure. The Great Pyramids along the Nile are on its West Bank. The ancient Egyptians compared the rising sun to the beginning of life and the setting sun to the end of life. This is why their dead bodies were buried on the West Bank of the Nile. The people of Mexico also built pyramids. They did not build the pyramids for tombs. They used to build a pyramid and then a temple on top of it. The pyramids of Mexico are not as high as the pyramids of Egypt, but they are bigger. Each of the pyramids has a wide stairway(楼梯) that goes from the bottom to the top. The biggest pyramid in Mexico is almost 2,000 years old. Scientists think it took 10,000 men more than ten years to build it. On the top they built a temple of the sun. The temple is no longer there, but people still call it the Pyramid of the Sun. Near it is another huge pyramid, the Pyramid of the Moon. 25. In ancient Mexico pyramids were built _______. A. in honour of the gods B. for the king’s tombs C. to hold the king’s treasure D. as places of interest 26. Which pyramid was built at least 2,000 years ago? A. The Great Pyramid. B. The pyramids of Egypt are less high than those of Mexico. C. The pyramids of Mexico are just the same as those of Egypt. D. The pyramids of Mexico are quite different from those of Egypt. C The Norwegian government is doing its best to keep the oil industry under control. A new law limits exploration to an area south of the southern end of the long coastline; production limits have been laid down(though these have already been raised) ; and oil companies have not been allowed to employ more than a limited number of foreign workers. But the oil industry has a way of getting over such problems, and few people believe that the government will be able to hold things back for long. Ever since the war, the government has been carrying out a program of development in the area north of the Arctic Circle. For the past few years this program has had a great deal of success: Torso has been built up into a local capital with a university, a large hospital and a healthy industry. But the oil industry has already started to draw people south, and within a few years the whole northern city could be in ruins. The effects of the oil industry would not be limited to the north, however. With nearly 100 per cent employment, everyone can see a situation developing in which the service industries and the tourist industry will lose more of their workers to the oil industry. Some smaller industries might even disappear altogether when it becomes cheaper to buy goods from abroad. The real argument over the oil industry is its effects on the Norwegian way of life. Farmers and fishermen do not make up most of the population, but they are an important part of it because Norwegians see in them many of the qualities that they regard with pride as real Norwegians. And it is the farmers and the fishermen who are most against the oil industry because of the damage that it might cause to the sea and to the countryside and to the whole country. One Norwegian politician said last week, “We will soon be changed beyond all recognition.” 28. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph most exactly means “_______”. A. Norway will be changed so much that it can hardly be recognized B. The Norwegian way of life will change greatly, as we recognize C. We can not recognize the Norwegian oil industry as it develops so quickly D. The Norwegian government cannot carry out the law against the changing oil industry 29. The Norwegian government has tried to_______. A. encourage the oil companies to discover new oil resources B. prevent oil companies from employing more people from southern Norway C. help the oil companies solve many of their problems D. keep the oil industry to something near its present size 30. According to the passage, the oil industry might lead to _______ in northern Norway. A. the development of industry B. a growth in population C. the failure of the development program D. the development of new towns 31. Norwegian farmers and fishermen have an important effect because _______. A. they form such a large part of Norwegian society B. their views of life and value agree with the Norwegian government’s C. Norwegians respect them as representatives(代表) of Norwegian culture D. they regard oil as harm to the Norwegian way of life D Would you carry around an electronic ID, not in your pocket, but in your body? Does this idea scare you or make you feel safe? The first computer ID chip(芯片) that could be planted under a person’s skin might be marketed very soon. Developed by Applied Digital, an American technology company based in Florida, the device(发明物) could meet the need for public security(安全) after the September 11 attacks. For airports, nuclear power plants(核电站) and other high security facilities(设备), the immediate effects are obvious. The technology could help put an end to false ID cards, because it would be difficult to remove and copy a tiny computer chip. The chip is as small as a grain of rice. The technology would also allow satellites to track(追踪) a person’s every movement and store medical records. These uses are already attracting interest for tasks like fighting against kidnappings(绑架), or helping with medical operations. But some people are afraid of the loss of privacy(隐私). “You always have to think about what the device could be used for tomorrow,” said Lee Tien, a senior privacy lawyer in the United States. “At first a device is used for applications we all agree are good, but then it slowly starts being used for more than it was intended,” he said. However, Applied Digital says it will soon apply for(申请) government permission for the device. It says that the first people to use the chip will be volunteers. Getting the implant(需移植的芯片) would go something like this: A person or company buys the chip from Applied Digital for about US $ 200. And the company encodes(编码) it with the desired information. The customer then takes the chip to their doctor, who can plant it with a large needle. The device has no power supply, rather it is activated(使活动, 使运行) by a scanner(扫描仪) running across the skin above it. Without a scanner, the chip cannot be read. Even with the privacy concern, some are already eager to use the product. Jell Jacobs from Florida hopes to become the first buyer of the chip to store his medical records. Suffering from a serious illness, he wants to make sure doctors can help him quickly. Eight Latin American companies have also shown interests in the device. It could help to find any tourists who are kidnapped. 32. The best title for the passage is _______. A. Why Is the New ID Necessary B. Getting a New Kind of ID Under Your Skin C. An Advertisement for Chips D. Where to Buy the Chip 33. Which of the following is true according to the text? A. In some airports and factories such device is already being used. B. The information on the chip can be read when it has its power supply. C. The technology could help put an end to false ID cards. D. The first computer ID chip has already come into the market. 34. What is the advantage with the electronic ID according to the passage? A. It can store people’s medical records and help with medical operations. B. With this people will have no fear of losing privacy. C. It’s cheap to buy and easy to get. D. It is developed by Applied Digital in Florida. 35. What can we learn about Jeff Jacobs? A. He’s a worker in Applied Digital, a company in Florida. B. He’s a doctor who helps plant tile chips on people. C. He fears if he uses the chip he will lose privacy. D. He’s suffering from a serious illness and wants to buy the chip. 第二节 七选五(共5小题,每小题2.5分,共12.5分) How to keep yourself safe from new virus?
