Now she is about to begin her freshman year at the University of California, planning to become a professor.‎ Born and raised in San Diego’s City Heights neighbourhood, Deka is the daughter of a Somali refugee couple. While some might say Deka’s success happened in spite of her background, she would say differently, that her experiences shaped her and inspired her to be the driven, young scientist that she is today.‎ When Deka was eight years old, her mother got a job by studying hard back in school in order to support the whole family. That made Deka realize that education could make a difference to one’s life. She spent a lot of time in the library reading books, and didn’t do many of the things her peers did, like partying or having romantic relationships.‎ ‎“I always felt like I had to be the perfect girl for my family,” Deka said. “You have to not even do your best but two times better than everyone else. I felt like the whole world was waiting for me to mess up.”‎ ‎ Deka’s efforts paid off. The summer before her senior year of high school, she was ‎ accepted to the American Chemical Society Project SEED Programme. “She brought both enthusiasm and focus,” Botham, a researcher at this research institute, recalled. “She arrived every day ready to work, ready to learn and ready to tackle new challenges regardless of whether or not she had done anything similar.”‎ When asked what advice she would give to others like her, Deka warned them not to underestimate themselves. “Don’t tell yourself that scholarship is too big or this programme is too competitive or I’ll never get into this school,” she said. “I was not sure whether I could make it until I started seeing the acceptance letters rolling in.”‎ ‎24. From the passage, we can learn that .‎ A. Deka was adopted by a refugee family B. Deka spent a lot of time going to parties C. Deka became a professor after graduation D. Deka’s experiences drove her to work hard ‎25. Deka realized the importance of education .‎ A. from her mother’s experience B. after her chemistry class C. by reading books in the library D. through working at the institute ‎ ‎26. According to the last paragraph, Deka advised that students be .‎ A. patient B. confident C. ambitious D. generous ‎ ‎27. What does the story intend to tell us?‎ A. Life is not all roses. B. Practice makes perfect.‎ C. Well begun is half done. D. Hard work leads to success.‎ C The rapid growth in skyscrapers worldwide, most of which have large windows, has led to a high demand for window washers. Though the job is well-paid, it is dangerous and accidents are not uncommon. However, if Israel-based start-up Skyline Technologies has its way, the dangerous job may soon be done by Ozmo, an intelligent window cleaning robot, with humans supervising (监督) from the safety of the ground.‎ Much like humans, Ozmo, sitting on platforms hanging from the buildings, uses its ‎ arms and brushes to clean the dirt on the glass. A 3D map of the building’s surface programmed into its system allows the robot to skillfully deal with any obstacle it is likely to meet, as it moves up and down the buildings. The robot will self-correct and move around every obstacle that it might have met so as not to break a window.‎ Unlike present window washers, the robot cleaner does not require soap to clean the glass. Instead, it uses distilled (蒸馏的) water to do the job. Yaron Schwarcz, CEO of Skyline Robotics explains, “We are environmentally friendly.”‎ Ozmo is also expected to be much more efficient than its human counterparts. While it presently takes three cleaners 480 hours each to clean windows of a 40-storey glass building, the robot will be able to do it in 80 hours. However, unlike other robots, Ozmo will not replace human workers, and only make their jobs safer by making them supervisors, who will be controlling the operation from the safety of the ground.‎ Whether Ozmo, which is still being tested, does as good a job as humans remains to be seen. If things go well, its creators have much bigger ambitions for Ozmo. Schwarcz told Forbes Magazine, “Window cleaning is just the tip of the iceberg. We plan to replace all tasks that are dangerous and dirty.”‎ ‎28.Why is Ozmo friendly to our environment?‎ A.It depends on solar energy. ‎ B.It uses less soap than other robots.‎ C.It makes our ecosystem more balanced. ‎ D.It consumes nothing made from chemicals.‎ ‎29.What can we infer from the passage?‎ A.Like cleaning windows, a well-paid job is usually dangerous.‎ B.Ozmo can’t be stopped by obstacles with its advanced system.‎ C.Without humans supervising, Ozmo could have performed better.‎ D.Ozmo can save 400 hours per building compared to a human cleaner.‎ ‎30.What does the underlined part “the tip of the iceberg” mean?‎ A.As cool as the iceberg. B.A small part of a big plan. ‎ C.The most advanced technology. D.The leading role in the modern world.‎ ‎31.What is the best title for the text?‎ A.Robots make a difference. ‎ B.Supervise Ozmo, human safe.‎ C.Meet Ozmo, the window cleaning robot. ‎ D.Intelligent Ozmo becomes known worldwide.‎ D Great whites and whale sharks are among the species at risk of extinction over the next century, a new study has found. ‎ Pimiento is the lead author of a study published in Science Advances that looks at how the extinction of large marine(海洋的)species would impact the ecological roles of ocean ecosystems. “The extinction crisis challenges scientists to better measure biodiversity: how will the total variety of life on Earth be affected as human activities lead to the losses of more and more species?” they said. In the oceans, the biggest animals are thought to play crucial ecological roles, and are also facing high levels of threat from human activities such as fisheries and climate change.‎ The team was looking to move beyond traditional species extinctions, to find out more about the functional diversity, the range of roles that these species perform, and how biodiversity might respond under different extinction scenarios(预测). They ran two different extinction scenarios. In one, researchers looked at extinction probability based on their current IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) status. In the second, they assumed all species listed as threatened, around 40 percent, had gone extinct.‎ Sharks were found to be one of the worst affected groups. “We already knew that sharks are one of the most threatened groups in the ocean,” they said. “They are also very vulnerable due to their large size and low reproductive rate. Our results show that future extinctions would be selective against the most functionally unique and specialized shark species, resulting in greater projected losses.” They also said the biggest threats to marine megafauna(大型哺乳动物群)are fishing, either through accidentally getting caught up or directly targeted, and climate change. Mitigating these threats could be the best way to protect these species. ‎ The good news is that the study identifies key species that can be targeted and protected. Sometimes ocean conservation can be a triage game. The science helps us know which species really need our help and which species we really cannot afford to lose.‎ 32. What is Pimiento’s study about?‎ A. The possible threats of large marine animals.‎ B. The main cause of the extinction crisis in the sea. ‎ C. The ecological role of large animals in the ocean.‎ D. The best way of balancing biodiversity with human acts.‎ ‎33. How did the team conduct its research?‎ A. By checking current data.‎ B. By predicting extinction rates.‎ C. By measuring marine biodiversity.‎ D. By analyzing traditional experiments.‎ ‎34. What does the study’s result show?‎ A. The risk of sharks reproducing in the ocean. ‎ B. The solution to animals’ protection in the sea.‎ C. The influence of sharks’ extinction on the ocean. ‎ D. The reason for sharks being hit hardest in the sea. ‎ ‎35. What is the author’s attitude towards the study?‎ A. Indifferent. B. Positive. C. Skeptical. D. Negative.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to Reduce Anxiety During a Quarantine Several governments around the world have requested or ordered their citizens to quarantine themselves: to stay at home to avoid contact with others so as to slow the spread of diseases like COVID-19. It first appeared in China in late December and quickly became a worldwide health emergency. 36 . Here are some tips for you to reduce anxiety.‎ Use social media wisely.‎ For people thriving off social interaction, this practice can be troubling. But Rosmarin,a psychologist from Harvard Medical School, says a lack of physical proximity(接近)shouldn't mean a lack of socializing. He says phoning friends and staying in touch can allow us to maintain our connections, though he cautions that social media like Twitter doesn't provide the same benefits and creates distance. Instead, 37 . Playing online games or other virtual activities can also help you maintain feelings of remaining connected when avoiding in-person visits.‎ Don’t let the news cycle determine your emotions ‎ The coronavirus situation is dynamic and seems to change by the hour, resulting in a number of people feeling irresistible to stay on top of updates by constant checking their phones. While that can be stressful at any time, it can affect your ability to relax if you surf news outlets just before going to sleep. 38 . Sleep is critical to a healthy immune system, and giving yourself an opportunity to relax is important. ‎ Keep your usual routine ‎ Routines will go a long way toward helping you avoid feelings of disorganization. Do laundry on Sundays? Keep doing it on Sunday. Not going to work? Get dressed anyway. "Anxiety is just the beginning," Rosmarin says. "Within a week or two, people are probably going to start feeling depressed, especially when we are distancing from one another. That's really where the benefits of scheduling come in." 39 .‎ At last, 40 . If you are experiencing helplessness from the effects of quarantine, contact a health care provider, a community organization or an emergency hotline number.‎ A. It's very unlikely an update will be so urgent or pressing that it would lose relevance by morning B. sticking to your normal sleep patterns and other practices, which will overcome your helplessness C. keep a check on your own feelings D. Quarantines, however, can cause health problems and puts people at greater risk of anxiety and depression as a result of the isolation E. call or conference people you know personally, one-on-one F. Continuing with normal routines as much as possible will help you stay healthy G. Doing as usual will also help you adjust when the world returns--as it inevitably will-- to normalcy 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、G和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。‎ My daughter loved dance, until she didn’t. After an 41 first year, I noticed her interest fading week by week. Then, one day, she slowly walked to me before class and asked if she could just 42 it.‎ My first reaction was to 43 her to “finish what you start”. 44 , sticking with something difficult can teach perseverance, discipline and confidence. But watching my first-grader 45 herself into each ballet position, I started to question how much 46 that “blanket advice” made. Is it really in my kid’s best 47 , or even practical, to make her stick to every commitment through until she reaches a bitter 48 ? What if there are different but 49 valuable qualities, which can be gained by 50 the things that are not right for her?‎ With the winter show approaching, I realized she needed to either 51 her class or commit herself to it. After a few days’ consideration, she 52 dance wasn’t for her — a choice I 53 . Quitting is never a black-and-white issue. ‎ Sometimes, it means 54 a barrier in your way to love something else. In my daughter’s case, ending dance made space for her new hobbies, such as horseback riding and Girl Scouts. She’s into them for now, but it is okay if that 55 changes.‎ As adults, we are accustomed to 56 the power of saying yes, but what about saying no? The ability to recognize when something isn’t an 57 investment of our time or energy is also important. As my daughter gets older, I want her to feel confident to 58 something that’s no longer meeting her needs. She shouldn’t be held back by the thought that she must 59 something at any cost 60 because she has started.‎ ‎41. A. annoyed B. independent C. enthusiastic D. unbearable ‎42. The holiday schedule runs from 8:00 am till 4:30 pm on work day, with more and longer breaks for rest than usual.‎ Personally, I’ve got used to online learning, which I think is a creative form of schooling, and also our own way to fight the COVID-19 epidemic. We’ve come to realize how important computers and mobile phones have become to us! But I really miss the days with my friends and teachers on campus. That’s why I pray for the end of the epidemic every day, and I believe it’ll soon come.‎ Best wishes,‎ Yours, Li Hua 英语听力原文 Text 1‎ M: What did you do this weekend, Susan?‎ W: I met up with my friends on Saturday and went to see a movie downtown.‎ M: Oh, I should have called you. I was in the neighborhood having dinner with my family.‎ Text 2‎ W: I think you really should close the bar down. It’s been robbed five times in the last six months. Do you really want to continue putting your life at risk like that?‎ M: But it’s my lifelong project! How could I just give it up?‎ Text 3‎ M: That airline has never had an accident in its history. It is the safest airline of them all.‎ W: That may be so, but there’s always a first time. For that reason, I get very nervous about flying.‎ Text 4‎ M: Good morning. I need some information about the trains to New York.‎ W: There are two trains to New York every morning, No. 49 and No. 78. ‎ Text 5‎ M: That’s where the pandas live.‎ W: Pandas? I’ve only seen pandas on TV and pictures.‎ M: Two pandas came to the zoo from Sichuan last month.‎ Text 6‎ M: Do you want to play some tennis?‎ W: I’ve never played before, but I’ll give it a try.‎ M: Good for you! It was so emotional and the characters seemed so real. I couldn’t put the book down.‎ M: Why did you read it so recently? I thought that book was for kids.‎ W: I don’t think so. Some of the themes in the book are timeless, such as the desire to improve one’s life, or the search for true love. I guess the structure of the story might seem a bit simple for people who read it today, though.‎ M: I remember thinking that the happy ending seemed a bit forced, like a Hollywood movie where everything is hard and terrible for two hours, and then things turn out great in the last five minutes.‎ W: Well, I’m going to recommend it to my fourteen-year-old daughter. I’m curious to see if she’ll like it.‎ Text 10‎ Hello, everyone. Tomorrow’s issue will be the last one for our newspaper. We all knew this day was coming, and it is a sad day. I want to thank all of you, all the editors(编辑), writers, photographers, page designers, printers — everyone who helped make this paper for the past 150 years. It’s been a pleasure and an honor working with you. As you’ve heard, we will continue to have an online news site with a staff of 25. This re-designed website will begin tomorrow. We hope that it will help fill the gap left by the end of the printed product. Meanwhile, we have one more issue to put out. Let’s get to work and make it the best it can be.‎ ‎ ‎
