Great Women B. Famous Scientists C. Strong Leaders D. Ways to Success for Women B 2015 saw things heat up and get out of hand, and not just in politics. A record warm December raised average temperatures enough to make 2015 the second hottest year on record in the contiguous United States, according to a national report, which was released Thursday. The United Nations had previously reported that 2015 was shaping up to be the warmest year on record for the whole planet. Last year was also the third wettest on record in the U.S. and saw ten weather- or climate-related disasters that each caused at least $1 billion in damage in the U.S. and killed a total of 155 people. These include a drought, two floods, five severe storms, a wildfire, and a winter storm. The average U.S. temperature was 54.4°F, 2.4°F above the 20th century average, and second only to 2012's record warmth. This was also the 19th consecutive year with average temperatures above the average for the century. Part of this warming was driven by a strong EL Nino , or periodic warming in the Pacific Ocean, but some of it can also be attributed to global warming, says meteorologist Eric Holthaus, who was not involved with the federal report. The analysis comes less than a month after the U.S. and 194 other countries signed an agreement in Paris to more aggressively counter the effects of climate change. “Even if all the initial targets in Paris are met, we’ll only be part of the way there when it comes to reducing carbon from the atmosphere,” said President Barack Obama at the time. Still, the agreement represented “a turning point” by setting up “the architecture" for doing so, he said. NOAA's climate monitoring center doesn't issue predictions for future weather, but the agency's Climate Prediction Center does. That team's forecast for the next three months calls for warmer-than-average temperatures in much of the country, although parts of Texas and the Southeast may be a little cooler than usual. As Lancaster University Professor Gail Whiteman told the Weather Channel, "climate change means extreme weather is the new normal." 4. Which of the following is the best title? A. Extreme weather happens regularly B. 2015, the hottest year C. An agreement in Paris D. 2015 was a warm, wild year. What’s next? 5. Ten climate-related disasters that happened in the U.S. last year cost _______in damage. A. at least $1 billion B. no less than $1 billion C. no more than $10 billion D. no less than $10 billion 6. The average temperature of the 20th century is _______. A. 54.4°F B. 2.4°F C. 52°F D. 56.8°F 7. The word “counter” (Paragraph 6) is closest in meaning to _______. A. support B. prevent C. analyze D. confuse C I prefer Lynne Truss’s phraseology: I am a grammar “sticker”. And, like Truss – author of Eats, shoots & Leaves – I have a “zero tolerance” approach to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid. Now, Truss and I disagree on what it means to have “zero tolerance”. She thinks that people who mix up basic grammar “deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked (砍) up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave”, while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job – even if they are otherwise qualified for the position. Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies, iFixit or Dozuki, takes a compulsory grammar test. If job hopefuls can’t distinguish between “to” and “too”, their applications go into the bin. Of course, we write for a living. iFixit.com is the world’s largest online repair manual (指南), and Dozuki helps companies write their own technical documentation, like paperless work instructions and step-by-step user manuals. So, it makes sense that we’ve made a strong strike against grammar errors. But grammar is relevant for all companies. Yes, language is constantly changing, but that doesn’t make grammar unimportant. Good grammar is credibility, especially on the Internet. And, for better or worse, people judge you if you can’t tell the difference between “their” “there” and “they’re”. Good grammar makes good business sense – and not just when it comes to hiring writers. Writing isn’t in the official job description of most people in our office. Still, we give our grammar test to everybody, including our salespeople, our operations staff, and our programmers. Grammar signifies more than just a person’s ability to remember high school English. I’ve found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing – like stocking shelves or labeling parts. It is the same with programmers. Applicants who don’t think writing is important are likely to think lots of other things also aren’t important. 8. The author agrees with Lynne Truss in that ________. A. grammar mistakes can’t be tolerated B. books on grammar make people stupid C. people need to learn basic grammar D. grammar mistakes are absolutely unavoidable 9. What’s the author’s “zero tolerance” approach to these job seekers who mix up basic grammar? A. They should be left out for a job.B.They have to correct their mistakes. C. They aren’t qualified for their jobs.D. They must be severely punished. 10. Which of the following is TRUE of iFixit and Dozuki? A. Only one of them has a compulsory grammar test. B. They are companies where one learns grammar. C. Grammar is quite important for their existence. D. They depend on grammar correction for a living. 11. What can we learn from the text? A. Companies giving grammar tests may have no good business sense. B. Grammar becomes unimportant as language is constantly changing. C. A “zero tolerance” approach to grammar errors might seem a little unfair. D. People who pay attention to writing may pay attention to other things. D Here are four pieces of news from China Daily: SHANGHAI – The Huachen Group, which has put 83 million yuan in the development of the ecommerce market since its official registration late last year, recently held a meeting in Shanghai to show the use of its newly opened tourism business payment network. The network aims to serve tourists from all over the world, but especially from Europe and the United State where credit cards are popularly used. After opening the www. Chinaecent. com website, netizens can get information about hotels and tourism services on tourism page. Hotels and services can be reserved and payments made through credit cards. The network opened in February in Beijing. SYDNEY – The Sydney Olympic flame will travel underwater on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef during the torch relay(火炬接力)following a successful test. Scuba diver Wendy Craig, a marine biologist, will carry the torch on a three-to-four-minute underwater journey at Agincourt Reef on June 27, creating Olympic history, organizers said yesterday. Burning at 2,000 degrees, the torch is expected to remain alight(点燃着的)three metres under-water because of a special kind of technology which creates a “fierce flame” too powerful to be drowned out by water. Charles Tegner, managing director of torch creator, said the flame would burn like a flare from oxygenproducing chemicals. BEIJING – The election of a new leader in Taiwan can not change the fact that Taiwan is a part of Chinese territory. “Taiwan Independence” in whatever form will never be allowed, according to a statesman of China’s central government. “We should listen to what the new leader in Taiwan says and watch what he does. We will observe where he will lead cross-Straits relations. We are willing to exchange views on cross-Straits relations and peaceful reunification with all parties, organizations and persongages in Taiwan who favor(赞同)the one China principle.” says the statesman, which was released(发布)by the Taiwan Affairs Office of the CPC Central Committee. HAIKOU – Customs officers in Haikou, capital of South China’s Hainan Province, recently stopped a boat loaded with 781 cases of foreign-brand cigarettes being smuggled(走私)into China. The cigarettes are estimated to be worth more than 1.8 million yuan, said a customs officer, they discovered the smuggling boat as they were going around the northern sea area of Yangpu Port. The smuggled cigarettes cases, packed into two containers, were disguised to avoid(回避)being examined. The boat was registered(登记)in the coastal city of Xiamen in East China’s Fujian Province. All eight suspects(疑犯)aboard the boat were kept by the police in Haikou. 12.Why does the network aim to serve tourists especially from Europe and the USA?( ) A.Because they are from developed countries. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part, a source of who you are. 16 . Tell them you love them every morning. A gentle "good morning" and "I love you" will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world.
