Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study.‎ They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner’ s Dilemma. The game is based on the tension between the interests of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players. Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded it the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings. The study appeared last month in the journal Science.‎ The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children were aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children were aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first ‎ test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not.‎ The study says the IQs of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points. The more they are spanked, the slower their mental development.‎ ‎28. According to the first study, we mainly infer that _________ .‎ A. the game is called Prisoner’s Dilemma B. the less a group punished itself, the lower its earnings C. adults are much more cooperative if rewarded D. the game is introduced in the journal Science ‎29. Which of the following is TRUE according to the second study?‎ A. Children's IQs have much to do with physical punishment.‎ B. The study is about violence and cooperation of children.‎ C. The children tested were divided into groups of four.‎ D. Children's mental development only relies on their IQs.‎ ‎30. What does the underlined word "spanked" refer to?‎ A. Punished. B. Blamed. C. Tested. D. Praised.‎ ‎31. What might be the best title for the text?‎ A. The Best Way to Correct Misbehavior B. Punishment Is the Best Way of Education C. Cooperation Is the Most Successful Behavior D. Punishment or Reward: Which Works Better on Behavior?‎ D Food picked up just a few seconds after being dropped is less likely to contain bacteria than if it is left for longer periods of time, according to the findings of research carried out at Aston University's School of Life and Health Sciences. The findings suggest there may be some scientific basis of the "5-second rule"—the belief about it being fine to eat food that has only had contact with the floor for five seconds or less. Although people have long followed the "5-second rule", until now it was unclear whether it actually helped.‎ The study, undertaken by final year Biology students and led by Anthony Hilton, Professor of Microbiology at Aston University, monitored the transfer of the common bacteria from a variety of indoor floor types as carpet, cement floor to toast, pasta, biscuit and a sticky sweet when contact was made from 3 to 30 seconds. The results showed that: time is a significant factor in the transfer of bacteria from a floor surface to a piece of food, and the type of flooring the food has been dropped on has an effect, with bacteria least likely to transfer from carpeted surfaces and most likely to transfer from cement flooring surfaces to moist foods making contact for more than 5 seconds. Professor Hilton said, "Consuming food dropped on the floor still carries an infection risk as it very much depends on which bacteria are present on the floor at the time."‎ The Aston team also carried out a survey of the number of people who employ the “five-second rule”. The survey showed that: 87% of the people surveyed said they would eat food dropped on the floor, or already have done so.55% of those that would, or have eaten food dropped on the floor are women.81% of the women who would eat food from the floor would follow the "5-second rule". Professor Hilton added, "Our study showed that a surprisingly large majority of people are happy to consume dropped food, with women the most likely to do so. But they are also more likely to follow the "5-second rule", which our research has shown to be more than an old wives’ tale."‎ ‎32.Which kind of food is not used in the study?‎ A. Toast bread B. Italian noodles C. Chips D. Sticky candy ‎33.How did Professor Hilton feel after analyzing how many people chose to eat dropped food?‎ A. Puzzled B. Upset C. Satisfied D.Astonished ‎34.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?‎ A. Most men would follow the "5-second" rule.‎ B. People who would eat food dropped on the floor are in the minority.‎ C. Bacteria are easier to transfer from cement floors than carpeted surfaces.‎ D. Food dropped on the cement floor is less likely to be polluted than that on the carpet.‎ ‎35. What can be learned from the passage?‎ A. The food which is dropped on the floor can be eaten safely.‎ B. The research may provide some scientific evidence to the "5-second rule".‎ C. The bacteria have no negative effect on the safety of food.‎ D. People surveyed in the research are willing to accept the idea.‎ 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ The last thing you want is a bad grade on a paper that took a lot of hard work and time. 36 To be successful in school, you have to make sure you know what assignments you're supposed to complete.
