根据第一段第一句的“It offers programs for educators, including free arts curricula, professional development courses...” 根据Custom Tour部分中的“Tour can be customized to accommodate a variety of interests, learning styles and subject matter. Our gallery educators can create a one-of-a-kind experience tailored to your group's needs.” 根据Education facilities部分中的“include studio art and multimedia labs, a theater, an exhibition gallery, and a conference room.” 如第3小题“What can we do in the Sackler Center?” 选项为A. Appreciate art works;B. Dine with your friends;C. Perform science experiments;D. Collect your favorite exhibits。根据Education facilities部分中的“include studio art and multimedia labs, a theater, an exhibition gallery, and a conference room.” A。 B Used clothes are rather difficult to deal with. They are made from chemicals, cotton, or wool, which consume many resources in the process of manufacturing and, if burned, they pollute the air and increase the carbon pressure upon the environment. Therefore, it is a good thing for used clothes to be recycled in factories instead of being disposed of in garbage cans to be incinerated or transported to landfill sites. In that sense, the companies that put the donation boxes in communities have done something good and beneficial. However, if they mean to recycle used clothes, they need to tell people that and label their collection boxes as "recycle boxes" instead of misleading people by calling them "donation boxes". People expect their "donated" clothes to go to the poor, not factories. People need to be more realistic as well. Donating clothes may not bring much help to the poor. Especially, as it takes a lot of human labor to collect the used clothes, sort them, clean and disinfect them and deliver them to less-developed areas. Every step costs money and sometimes the total cost might even be higher than buying new clothes in large quantities. Sometimes the poor might not need used clothing, but they cannot trade the clothes for what they do need. It might be a sad fact, but the most effective and efficient way of helping poor people is donating money and letting them get what they need themselves. So, when people want to send a helping hand, they need to donate money, instead of simply donating their used, unwanted clothes. 4. What is the first paragraph mainly about? A. The donation boxes should be put more in communities. B. Unwanted clothes can be recycled in donation boxes. C. Putting donation boxes in communities is right for companies. D. Used clothes should be recycled in factories. 5. Why cannot the boxes in communities be called “donation boxes”? A. The poor don’t need clothing donations any longer. B. Recycling these used clothes needs much more money. C. Donation boxes are intended for collecting unwanted clothes. D. The clothes in the boxes are to be recycled at last. 6. What does the author really mean by mentioning “a sad fact”? A. The poor cannot get help from it. B. The factories cannot benefit from it. C. It’s not convenient for the residents. D. It gets the communities into trouble sometimes. 7. What’s the author’s attitude towards “donation boxes in communities”? A. Supportive B. Disapproving C. Indifferent D. Doubtful 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. 由第一段“Therefore, it is a good thing for used clothes to be recycled in factories instead of being disposed of in garbage cans to be incinerated or transported to landfill sites. In that sense, the companies that put the donation boxes in communities have done something good and beneficial.” 由第二段“However, if they mean to recycle used clothes, they need to tell people that and label their collection boxes as "recycle boxes" instead of misleading people by calling them "donation boxes”可知,然而,如果他们打算回收旧衣服,他们需要告诉人们,并把他们的收集箱标签为“回收箱”,而不是误导人们称之为“捐赠箱”。 由第三段“Sometimes the poor might not need used clothing, but they cannot trade the clothes for what they do need”可知,有时穷人可能不需要旧衣服,但他们也不能用这些衣服来换取他们所需要的东西。 由第二段“However, if they mean to recycle used clothes, they need to tell people that and label their collection boxes as "recycle boxes" instead of misleading people by calling them "donation boxes”可知,然而,如果他们打算回收旧衣服,他们需要告诉人们,并把他们的收集箱标签为“回收箱”,而不是误导人们称之为“捐赠箱”。所以通过关键词“instead of misleading people by calling them "donation boxes”可以判断出,作者对“社区捐物箱”持不赞成的态度。 由第二段“However, if they mean to recycle used clothes, they need to tell people that and label their collection boxes as "recycle boxes" instead of misleading people by calling them "donation boxes”可知,然而,如果他们打算回收旧衣服,他们需要告诉人们,并把他们的收集箱标签为“回收箱”,而不是误导人们称之为“捐赠箱”。所以通过关键词“instead of misleading people by calling them "donation boxes”可以判断出,作者对“社区捐衣服箱”持不赞成的态度。 C We’ve all had cases where we’ve waited just a bit too long to pay an electric bill or speeding ticket. But one man, from California by reasonable assumption, who goes by “Dave”, recently took procrastination (拖延) one step further, by paying a parking ticket almost a half-century after it was given. In December 2018, the Minersville Police Department in Pennsylvania received a letter in the mail. Whoever wrote the letter decided it was best to keep his name somewhat unknown, so he put the return address as “Wayward Road, Anytown California” under the name “Feeling guilty”. When the officers opened the envelope, they found a brief letter, along with a $5 bill, and a parking ticket dating all the way back to 1974. The note read, “Dear PD, I’ve been carrying this ticket around for 40 plus years always intending to pay. Forgive me if I don’t give you my info. With respect, Dave.” Even though the initial parking ticket was only for $2, “Dave” must have felt awfully guilty because he left 150 percent, or $3, in interest. Michael Combs, the Police Chief of the Minersville Police Department, stated in an interview that the same ticket would cost about $20 if it were given today. Combs went on to share that the original ticket from 1974 was given to a vehicle that had an Ohio license plate. Because there was no system for tracking tickets given to out-of-state cars back then, “Dave” could have gotten away with never paying the $2 fine. But apparently, guilt got the best of him, and he decided to finally cough up the money more than 40 years past its due date. 8. How much do we know about “Dave”? A. He lives in Wayward Road, Anytown California. B. The police are trying to find out more about him. C. His car probably came from Ohio at that time. D. “Dave” is of course the man’s real name indeed. 9. Why didn’t “Dave” pay for the parking ticket until recently? A. He completely forgot about it in the past 44 years. B. He didn’t find it until almost half a century later. C. He failed to find out who he should pay the money to. D. He didn’t pay for it just because of procrastination. 10. What drove “Dave” to pay for the parking ticket at last? A. A strong sense of guilt. B. Fear of being tracked by the police. C. Worry about being fined more. D. Sudden change of his financial situation. 11. Which of the following can be the best title? A. Police Chief of the Minersville Police Department Shares a Story B. Mysterious Procrastinator Finally Pays 44-Year-Old Parking Ticket C. Unusual Letter Comes from Wayward Road, Anytown California D. Parking Ticket Carried Around for Almost Half a Century from Ohio 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. 故选A。 But one man, from California by reasonable assumption, who goes by “Dave”, recently took procrastination (拖延) one step further, by paying a parking ticket almost a half-century after it was given. B。 D A large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal in mind: How can willpower be strengthened? If willpower is truly a limited resource, as the research suggests, what can be done to make it stay strong? Avoiding temptation (诱惑) is an effective method for maintaining self-control, which is called the “out of sight, out of mind” principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers less attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks, in plain sight. The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir of self-control raises a troubling question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail? Not necessarily. Researchers don’t believe that one’s willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down. High motivation might help overcome weakened willpower-at least to a point. Willpower may also be made less vulnerable(脆弱)to being exhausted in the first place. Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use. But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength. The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New Year’s Eve is the worst possible approach. Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas, so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don’t try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, Baumeister says, you’ll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won’t require making decisions at all. 12. From the studies in the passage we learn that . A. people have unlimited self-control B. high motivation ensures one’s success C. willpower is hardly completely exhausted D. too many temptations often lead to failure 13. The underlined phrase “tap into” in Paragraph 3 most probably means . A. make use of B. run out of C. build D. increase 14. The author compares self –control to muscles . A. to prove the long-term effect of willpower B. to show the significance of regular exercise C. to argue that self-control can he easily used up D. to explain the benefits of practicing self-control 15. To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer? A. “I will give up dessert and do exercise.” B. “I will set three goals this new semester.” C. “I will read an English novel every month.” D. “I will keep myself from any temptation.” C 13. A 14. D 15. Researchers don’t believe that one’s willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. 由第三段“The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down.” 所以通过上下文的语境,判断出“tap into”指利用,与make use of同义。 While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, you’ll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won’t require making decisions at all. 所以C项“I will read an English novel every month.” Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, you’ll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won’t require making decisions at all. C项“I will read an English novel every month.” The world is designed for right-handed people, but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left? ___16___ The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery. Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families, it’s assumed that left-handedness has a genetic(基因的) component to it. ___17___ In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that it’s kind of random. Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures. _____18_____ In some areas, the left hand became known as the “unclean” hand. In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example, Jesus sits at God’s right side. God’s left hand, however, is the hand of judgment. Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey. _____19_____A person giving directions will put their left hand behind them and even physically try to point with their right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite. ___20___People come to realize that left-handedness is natural. Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well. Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead, it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in. A. In other words, left-handers are born that way. B. Left-handedness used to be regarded as a disability. C. The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures are varied. D. Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities? E. Why do some parents force their left-handed children to become right-handed when writing? F. In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude. G. Fortunately, nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject left-handedness like before. D 17. A 18. C 19. F 20. 【16题详解】 由“The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery”可知,答案仍然是一个谜。 【17题详解】 由“Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families, it’s assumed that left-handedness has a genetic(基因的) component to it”可知,科学家们已经注意到左撇子倾向于在家族中遗传,认为左撇子有遗传因素。 【18题详解】 由“In some areas, the left hand became known as the “unclean” hand .In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey。In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite ”可知,在一些地区,左手被称为“不干净的”手。 【19题详解】 由“ In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite.” 【20题详解】 由“People come to realize that left-handedness is natural. Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well. Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead, it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in.” Stars guide the way for us in the dark.
