Nobody’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for. I felt confident that I’d raised a self-reliant boy, as we all try to do. But could he boil water? Sew on a button? Wash his clothes without turning them pink? No, no and no. Suddenly it hit me: He’d be leaving the house in a year to attend college. No way was I going to set a spoiled prince into the world.‎舒中高二统考英语 第3页 (共12页)‎ As parents, while we focus on our child’s confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommate, boyfriend, husband, or father. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, “What’s for dinner?” So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no.‎ For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for toasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust(馅饼皮)and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.‎ Three of my four grandparents were tailors, so Ray was genetically programmed to quickly master the basics, like mending a split seam or refastening a button. One day we covered Advanced Laundry, in which I taught him never to mix a red sweatshirt with white shirts or put sweaters in the dryer. I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother -- he tried to beg off sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive -- but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. “I appreciate more what you do as a mom,” he told me one day.‎ Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more important, he realizes there’s nothing masculine(男子气的)about being helpless. Not only can he make his own dinner, he can make it for his family, too. That’s what I call a man.‎ ‎24. Hearing her son’s question, the author felt _______. ‎ A. disappointed B. angry C. shocked D. calm ‎25. We can learn from the text that Ray ________.‎ A. preferred sewing to cooking ‎ B. made great progress in cooking C. was unwilling to take the course at first ‎ D. always thought it attractive to do housework ‎26. The underlined part “more than just housekeeping” shows that Ray _______.‎ A. acknowledges the author’s efforts B. did other work in the house C.fell in love with housework D. began to be more independent ‎27. What would be the best title for the text?‎ A. Are Women Programmed for Housework?‎ B. Should Boys Be Involved in Housework?‎ C. I’m Proud I’ve Raised a Curious Son ‎ D. A Present for My Future Daughter-in-law C In summer the extreme heat often makes people sweaty and restless. While people are annoyed by it, experts suggest summer is the best season to discharge (排放) your body’s toxins (毒素) and recover your energy.‎ One popular option is hot-stone massage (按摩). Therapists use smooth and heated stones, usually river rocks, to massage certain parts of the body, or place them on key points of the body. The warmth of the hot stones will improve blood circulation and also help relax muscles, while sweating is also believed to be good for discharging the body’s toxins.‎ Another popular option is hot-stone baths. The hot-stone bath will help the body discharge toxins and humidity that accumulated during the last winter. Summer is the best season to build a good body. Rather than use water or steam to heat and wash the body, people simply wear a coat or something comfortable, and then lie on heated stone tablets made of hot stones, which are warmed to around 45oC. The body will gradually warm up and blood circulation will also be improved. More sweat will come out quickly. The sweat is smooth and fresh, not smelly like that released after sports activities. Such baths bring a number of health benefits, such as anti-aging, improved blood ‎ circulation and stress relief. The slimming effect of dieting can even be promoted.‎ Using hot stones for healing dates back to ancient times, but the modern renewal of hot-stone massage is generally credited to Mary Nelson, a native of Tucson, Arizona, America, whose trademark is “LaStone Therapy”.‎ The therapy is gaining wide popularity with many people, especially those who have jobs in cool air-conditioned rooms. The hot-stone therapy can help cure many diseases, including back pain.‎ ‎28. What do people use to release toxins in our body according to the text?‎ A. Washing the body with cold water. B. Relaxing muscles ‎ C. Discharging lots of sweat. D. Lying on the warm beds.‎ ‎29. What can we know from the text?‎ A. Sports have greater effects on the health than hot-stone massage.‎ B. People should take ad vantage of summer to improve their health.‎ C. Using water of about 45℃ to wash the body is good for the health.‎ D. There are no toxins and humidity in the body in summer.‎ ‎30. What can be learned about the hot-stone therapy?‎ A. It was invented by Mary Nelson, an American.‎舒中高二统考英语 第5页 (共12页)‎ B. It successfully cured many people of cancer.‎ C. It is popular with people with its excellent effects.‎ D. It can help people avoid sweating too much in hot summer.‎ ‎31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?‎ A.The amazing functions of the hot-stone therapy B. The origin and development of the hot-stone therapy C. A healthy and comfortable lifestyle D. How to live comfortably in summer D Money might not grow on trees, but it seems that furniture does! Gavin Munro, a UK-based designer, has come up with a brilliant alternative to cutting beautiful trees and changing them into furniture.‎ He first came up with the idea of growing furniture when he was working as a gardener in California and also made furniture with washed-up driftwood on the side.‎ After several attempts, he finally managed to develop a model chair using four trees. Munro is now tending to a small 2.5 acre “furniture forest” of 400 trees in a field north of Derby, England. He uses specially designed plastic frames to make young oak and ash trees into the shapes of chairs, tables, frames, or lamps.‎ A forest that grows furniture sounds like a setting right out of Alice in Wonderland, but there’s nothing magical about it, just a lot of hard work. The forest consists of rows upon rows of trees covered in blue plastic shapes, changing them into furniture as they grow. Once they take the desired shape, they are cared for until thick, mature and ready for harvest.‎ After harvesting, each piece is planned(刨平) and finished to show off the wood grain inside. “It’s an art form in itself, keeping track of everything,” Munro said.‎ The entire process takes about four to eight years, resulting in fully functional, organic, eco-friendly furniture, and more long-lasting than anything else on the market. They are grown and grafted(嫁接) into one solid piece without any joints that loosen over time. As Munro puts it, “These pieces of furniture could last for centuries.”‎ Quality isn’t an issue with forest-grown furniture, but maintenance and scalability(可伸缩性) certainly are. For now, Munro expects to grow 50 pieces a year, with the first lot of chairs available for purchase in mid-2019, priced at $3,700 each.‎ ‎32. The first paragraph mainly serves as _________.‎ A. introduction B. praise C. comment D. background ‎33. By adopting a brace(支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.‎ Brace yourself for impact (撞击力). As soon as you're aware that you're going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle,so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the “ten and two” position.‎ Undo your seat belt. __37__ Unfasten the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn't going to wait for you to make the call.‎ ‎__38__ Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car's electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don't think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.‎ Break the window. If you aren't able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you'll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counter intuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car.__39_‎ Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival. __40__While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.‎ A. Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.‎ B. It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually.‎ C. Such accidents are particularly dangerous due to the risk of drowning.‎ D. In conclusion, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.‎ E. Lim was waiting in line to buy nuts at a street stall(货摊) in Shanghai and saw other customers show their phone and take the nuts without giving cash. Soon after, he realized that the customers were using WeChat Pay.‎ It seems that Singapore falls 63 in mobile payments. Some Chinese tourists find it 64 (convenience) when they have to use cash in Singapore.‎ The 65 (popular) of Chinese mobile payments has pushed some foreign companies to accept them. As we all know it, a good learning environment is vital if we want to study English well. Classes teaching in English provide students with such an environment. When English is the only language used in the classroom, students have more opportunities to practice listening and speaking. Therefore, they will be able to learn more quickly. Besides, there are also some problems for this teaching method. As we haven’t mastered enough words, sometimes we may find this difficult to follow the teacher. Slow learners may even lose interests in English.‎ Practice makes perfect. To learn English well require a lot of practice. Therefore,I like my English classes to be taught complete in English.‎ 第二节 书面表达(满分25分)‎ 观察下图,并根据你对该图的理解写一篇英语短文,内容包括:‎ ‎1. ‎ The Internet has long been regarded as a wonderful tool that allows students to gain insight to useful resources and information. However, this is not always the case.‎ As is vividly shown in the picture,a boy is happy with the fact that he can depend on the Internet to finish tasks without any difficulty. It mirrors that students tend to make use of the Internet to gain information nowadays.‎ There are some reasons accounting for it. First, students find it convenient to surf the Internet for useful information. Second, the pressure to succeed also causes students to turn to computers for accurate answers. Consequently,it’s likely that students will lose interest in studying, which is not beneficial to their overall development.‎ In my opinion,it is vital that students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities while doing tasks. Besides, teachers and parents should encourage students to be creative. Finally, doing tasks independently is of great significance.‎ 听力材料 Text 1 W: We are running out of time. It’s 12 o’clock.‎ M: Don’t worry. The film will start in 45 minutes.‎ Text 2‎ M: Have you gotten your Christmas shopping done yet?‎ W: Almost. I got a watch for my husband, but I can’t seem to find anything for my dad. He would probably like a book or a case for his coin collection.‎ Text 3‎ M: Have you heard that all the international flights have been canceled because of the weather?‎ W: No, I’ve been in the meeting-hall all day.‎ M: Unfortunately, I found it out while waiting for the flight to New York.‎ Text 4‎ M: Hello?‎ W: Hi, David. You are very difficult to reach. I called you several times. But I kept getting a busy signal. Is your phone out of order?‎ M: No, not out of order. But we seem to have a bad connection on the phone line. I can’t hear you clearly.‎ Text 5‎ W: Would you close your books now? Please remember to write down your name and school number.‎ M: How long do we have?‎ W: 90 minutes. If you finish the paper earlier, you can leave the room.‎ Text 6‎ W: Have you chosen the music for the party yet?‎ M: I was going to just let people bring their own.‎ W: Oh, I don’t think you should do that. One person needs to be in charge. Otherwise people will start disagreeing. Sonia’s really good at music. You could ask her.‎ M: OK, have you got her number?‎ W: Yeah, it’s on my mobile. I’ll text it to you.‎ Text 7‎ W: You know, if we’re going to buy a water heater, we should talk about it. We could go to the mall tomorrow. They’re having a sale.‎ M: Could we talk about this tomorrow?‎ W: Well, I’m just trying to plan my day.‎ M: Please honey, I have worked for 12 hours today. I want to go to sleep now.‎ Text 8‎ M: Hey, come and see my new computer. Look how fast it is.‎ W: Wow! I can’t believe it. I thought your other computers were fast!‎ M: Yeah. But this one is like lightning. And the picture’s so clear.‎ W: Yeah. You always have the latest, don’t you?‎ M: You bet. This machine is right on the cutting edge of technology. You wouldn’t believe how much I can do. Apart from checking e-mails and chatting, I can watch TV on it while surfing. And it’s not that expensive to upgrade, either. Uh, speaking of computers, how’s yours? Still like it?‎ W: Yeah, it’s fine. Thanks!‎ M: I know I gave you a good deal. It was only a year old. Still, are you sure it meets all your needs? Maybe you should think about upgrading.‎ W: You know me — the only things that I need a computer for are e-mails and word processing. I don’t think I’ll need a new one anytime soon.‎ Text 9‎ W: OK. They were the last customers, so we’re done for the evening. How did you find it?‎ M: I enjoyed it.‎ W: Oh good. I think it went really well on the whole and you’re very friendly and natural with the customers. And you serve the dessert quickly.‎ M: Thank you.‎ W: Well, there’re just a few little things. First, once people at the table have finished, can you just make sure you clear the plates as soon as possible? This way they can have a bit of space and have some time to just chat a bit.‎ M: OK. I’ll make sure I do it next time.‎ W: And um, it’d be really good that you could just try to keep the water glasses filled. Just fill them if you notice that they’re empty as you’re walking around or when you’re taking orders.‎ M: Oh, I thought if I do that, probably I’ll just interrupt them.‎ W: No, it’s fine if you can just very quietly go over and fill them. However, it gets easier as you go on. The first night’s always the most difficult one. You did really well.‎ Text 10‎ M: Attention please! Now I will give you a brief introduction to the Winter Festival. It is a free event for all people to enjoy, and is organized by a team of volunteers. The first Winter Festival was introduced the year before last. Sadly due to a lack of money no festival was held last year. This year the government may provide $15,000 to the festival. They also persuaded the businessmen around the town to offer the rest $5,000. There will be a free art exhibition on Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th December in the Center Park of the town. The opening hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and there is an opening night only on Friday, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Different from other exhibitions, this art exhibition is really a special one because the public will have the chance to watch the paintings which are from the town’s school. And all the paintings are created by the students.‎ It is great that the Festival is going to host a wonderful sound of music in the Main Exhibition Hall this year. This program aims to show some of the musical talents that we have in town. Everyone watching the ‎ performance had better not wear formal clothes, but fancy dress. And in the program, you will hear classical music, pop music, rock music and operas.‎
