‎ A Queensland‎ is one of the most amazing states in Australia. It has some of the most beautiful natural scenery on the planet, with the Great Barrier Reef, rainforests and impressive beaches. The Great Barrier Reef  It is one of the world’s largest natural features. It stretches more than ‎2,300 km along the north eastern coast of Australia from the northern tip of Queensland to just north of Bundaberg. The things that most surprise visitors to the reef are the colors. Without doubt, the best way to see the Great Barrier Reef is by diving. If you have a little extra money and you are feeling a bit lazy, you can fly over the reef in a plane. Fraser Island Another area of natural beauty is Fraser‎ ‎Island. This is the world’s largest sand island. It’s best visited from Hervey‎ ‎Bay on the mainland, where there are a number of places offering trips around the island. To fully appreciate Fraser‎ ‎Island you should go for three or four days. Attractions include some beautiful fresh-water lakes, particularly Lake Wabby and Lake‎ ‎Mckenzie. You can walk around these on white sands untouched by human footprints. Indian Head also has some beautiful views. Braver travelers can go and watch sharks circling the water hundreds of meters below. The Whitsunday Islands ‎ ‎ It would be a pity to travel around Queensland without taking a trip around the Whitsunday‎ ‎Islands. They were named by Captain Cook in 1770, after the day on which he arrived. Here are some of the great things you can do there. ●Cruise around them on a relaxing trip. ●Take a sailing course. ●Look at the aboriginal (土著的) paintings in caves on Hook Island. ●Have fun in the water doing lots of water sports. So, will you be going to Queensland? ‎ ‎1. The best way to admire the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef is             .‎ A. driving             B. taking a boat         ‎ C. flying in a plane            D. diving in the sea ‎ ‎2. What can we infer from Fraser‎ ‎Island? ‎ A. Lake Wabby and Lake‎ ‎Mckenzie are rarely visited places. B. Only brave ones can watch sharks in the deep ocean.‎ C. Few places on the mainland can offer trips around the island. D. One should have at least 2 days to fully explore Fraser‎ ‎Island.‎ ‎3. The purpose of writing this passage is             .          . ‎ A. to call on people to protect Queensland            B. to inform the latest news C. to advertise for Queensland       D. to break a world record B ‎ We all think plants were expected to get larger with increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but changes in temperature, humidity(湿度)and nutrient availability seem to have trumped the benefits of increased carbon dioxide” said researchers from the National University of Singapore.‎ ‎45 percent of the species studied now reach smaller adult sizes than they did in the past. The researchers pointed out that warmer temperatures and changing habitats, caused by climate change, are possible reasons for shrinking creatures.‎ ‎“ We do not yet know the mechanisms(机制)involved, or why some organism are getting smaller while others are unaffected,” the researchers said. “Until we understand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we can’t yet quantify. ’’‎ The change is big in cold-blooded animals. Only two decades of warmer temperatures are enough to make retiles (爬行动物)smaller. An increase of only 1 degree centigrade caused nearly a 10 percent increase in metabolism(新陈代谢). Greater use of energy resulted in tiny tortoises and little lizards. Fish are smaller now too. Though overfishing has played a part in reducing numbers, experiments show that warmer temperatures also stop fish growing.‎ Warm-blooded animals aren’t immune(免除)from the size change caused by climate change. Many birds are now smaller. Soay sheep are thinner. Red deer are weaken And polar bears are smaller, compared with historical records.‎ This is not the first time this has happened in Earth’s history. 55 million years ago, a warming event similar to the current climate change caused bees, spiders and ants to shrink by 50 to 75 percent over several thousand years. That event happened over a longer time than the current climate change.‎ The speed of modem climate change could mean organisms may not respond or adapt quickly enough, especially those with long generation times climate change will be shown in the future.‎ ‎4. What does the text mainly talk about______‎ A. Why some species become smaller.‎ B. How climate changes in Earth’s history?‎ C. Climate change has many negative effects.‎ D. Species are becoming smaller as climate gets warmer.‎ ‎5. The underlined word “trumped” in the first paragraph probably mean .‎ A. strengthened B. gained C. beat D. equaled ‎ ‎6. Researchers from the National University of Singapore believe that ‎ A. they have found the exact causes for creatures getting smaller.‎ B. all the animals on the earth have become smaller.‎ C. climate change has more negative effects on warm-blooded animals.‎ D. increase in energy use can lead to creatures getting smaller.‎ ‎7. What does the author feel about the climate change?‎ A. Disappointed B. Optimistic C. Worried D. Shameful C If Confucius(孔子) were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28‎ ‎ birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes. But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks(缺点) of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.     So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.      Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.     As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is. ‎ ‎8. The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ________. ‎ A. provide some key facts about Confucius          ‎ B. attract the readers’ interest in the subject C. show great respect for the ancient thinker          ‎ D. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations ‎9. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students ________. ‎ A. have a great interest in studying Chinese          ‎ B. take an active part in Chinese competitions C. try to get high scores in Chinese exams          ‎ D. fight for a chance to learn Chinese ‎10. What is the best title for the passage? ‎ A. Forgotten Wisdom in America            B. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language C. Old Thinker with a Big Future            D. Chinese Culture for Westerners ‎11. The passage is likely to appear in ________. ‎ A. a newspaper            B. a history paper           ‎ C. a biography            D. a philosophy textbook D The discussion on renewable energy has been going on for at least a decade and people have relied on fossil fuels almost entirely for more than a century. However, the situation when fossil fuels were the most efficient and the cheapest source of energy has been left far in the past. Many countries such as Germany and Sweden have already made significant efforts to fix this situation, employing numerous power plants working on the renewable resources of energy. The most effective among these resources is geothermal(地热的)energy.‎ Geothermal energy does not depend on the world’s economic and political situation as strongly as fossil fuels do. Besides, extracting(提炼)fossil fuels adds to the price of energy produced from them. Therefore, geothermal energy is much cheaper than traditional ones, saving up to 80% of the costs over fossil fuels.‎ Being a renewable resource, geothermal energy produces less waste and pollution than traditional energy sources. In geothermal systems, carbon dioxide makes up about 10% of air produced. Overall, in order to produce the electricity that can be used for one hour, the geothermal systems produce 0.1 pound of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. For a comparison, a power plant producing from gas produces up to 2 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and those power plants that work on coal(煤)produce an astonishing 3.6 pounds of greenhouse gases.‎ Low costs is another reason why using geothermal power plants should be the first choice for many countries. Geothermal heat systems require 25% to 50% less energy for work compared with the traditional systems for heating or cooling. Besides, geothermal ‎ equipment is less big: due to the very nature of geothermal energy, geothermal power plants have only a few moving parts, all of which can be easily sheltered inside a relatively small building. What’s more, the life span of geothermal equipment is rather long. All these make geothermal power stations easy to build and keep.‎ ‎12. Fossil fuels are more expensive than geothermal energy partly because ______.‎ A. it is free to use geothermal energy ‎ B. the production of fossil fuels costs a lot C. fossil fuels are nearly used up D. geothermal energy doesn’t depend on political situation ‎13. According to Paragraph 3, what can be concluded from the comparison?‎ ‎ A. Geothermal energy is environmentally friendly.‎ ‎ B. Gas and coal are often used to produce electricity.‎ ‎ C. Coal is much more efficient than gas.‎ ‎ D. The geothermal systems don’t produce harmful gases.‎ ‎14. Geothermal equipment is usually not as big as that of traditional energy because of_____.‎ ‎ A. the life span of geothermal equipment B. geothermal power plants ‎ C. the nature of geothermal energy D. the small buildings ‎15. What is the main idea of this passage?‎ ‎ A. Many countries have benefited from geothermal energy.‎ ‎ B. Geothermal energy is well accepted.‎ ‎ C. Fossil fuels are being run out of.‎ ‎ D. Geothermal energy has many advantages.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ We meet many people every day.
