So I was still traveling through a forest in a sleigh(雪橇) when the sun went down. It was a long way from my friend’s house when about twenty wolves began to follow my sleigh. It was very dark in the forest. There was thick snow on the ground. It was cold, and there were no houses for miles and miles. First I heard the wolves. The noise was terrible! The horses heard them, too. They were frightened and began running faster. Then I saw long, gray forms among the trees, and soon the wolves were near us. They were running very fast, and they didn’t seem to get tired like the horses.” “What did you do?” one of Jack’s friends asked. “When the wolves got very near,” Jack answered, “I put up my gun and shot the first wolf. The sleigh was moving about, but I hit the animal and killed it. Then all the other wolves stopped and ate it, so our sleigh got away from them for a few minutes.” “Then they finished their meal, and I heard them coming again. The moon was shining brightly on the snow now, and after a few minutes I saw them running among the trees once more. They came nearer again, and then I shot another of them, and the others stopped once more to eat it.” “The same thing happened again and again, and my horses became more and more tired and ran slower and slower until, after about two hours, only one wolf was still alive and following us.” “Wasn’t it too fat to run?” one of his friends asked. 24. Jack was telling the truth C It turns out that happy cows produce better milk. The finding is not new. The California Milk Advisory Board has been saying it for years. But now a team of researchers is helping farmers have happier herds. The researchers are visiting milk farms and showing farmers how to make their cows live better. Their advice and information is available around the world on their website. One important area for discussion is how to prevent leg pain, a condition also called lameness. Lameness impacts everything a cow gets to do in her day. It impacts the way she rests, the way she milks, the way she eats, her ability to reproduce and finally her ability to stay on the farm. A bed of sand can provide a good place for cows to lie down during the day. The deep, soft bedding of sand creates an environment where cows can rest half the day, and that is extremely important to cows. The researchers advise farmers to provide bigger stalls, the areas where cows are kept in a barn They also say farmers should use more fans to keep the animals cool, and feed all their cows at the same time. And researchers say it is a good idea to keep cows with their usual group of friends when it comes time for them to give birth. This helps lessen the stress for the cows. Mitch Breunig owns the Mystic Valley Dairy in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. He says he used the advice to improve the conditions for his 400 cows. Since he made the changes,Breunig says the dairy's production has increased. His cows have gone from producing 49 liters His cows have of milk a day to almost 57 liters. Also, his cows have fewer injuries and live about a year longer than before. That is good for the animals- and for people, too. 28. Why are the researchers visiting milk farms. A.To improve their cows' living conditions. B.To gather information from cow farmers. C. To create new cow farms for better milk. D.To help cow farmers prevent a cow disease. 29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A The harm of leg pain and how to solve it. B. How to make a bed of sand for cows. C. The proper atmosphere cows need. D. What cows need most in their life. 30. What should farmers do when cows give birth? A. Feed them at the same time. B. Leave them near their friends. C.Provide bigger room for them, D.Use more fans to keep them cool. 31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Advice on How to Keep Cows More Comfortable B. Cow Farmers Welcome Researchers to Their Farms C. Ways to Make Cows Produce More Milk than Usual D. Better Conditions Make for Happier Cows and Farmers D For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing special about it. Now we know that getting along with other people is something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything from our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad ones in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure hunt can be. You don’t have to be spineless (软弱的) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked and respected if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights. But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and polite to your group, to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character. You can not expect to be perfect, and so you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed (责备) unless he refuses to learn from them. Many young people become discouraged when they know in themselves qualities (品格) that they do not like—selfishness, laziness, and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these faults and have to fight against them. At the same time, it is important to remember that, while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong, it is good sense to try to make it right. Perhaps you don’t like a teacher or a classmate. Try to see why, and look at yourself, too. To be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislike you. Some day, things may turn out all right, then you will have to learn to get along the best with situation, without thinking too much about it. Worrying never helps in a situation you can’t change. 32. One of the two ways the author suggested for us to get along with others is________. A. to draw attention of our friends B. to demand the best share of everything C. to look for treasure in order to be successful D. to pay more attention to other people’s strong points 33. According to the passage, if one wants to be popular one needs to _________. A. be polite and friendly B. give up some rights C. avoid arguing with other people D. be ready to change his or her character 34. The passage shows that there is no perfect person but someone should be blamed if he _________. A. is no better than others B. is selfish and lazy C. does not draw a lesson from his own fault D. is very happy about his unpleasant quality 35. The passage implies (暗示) that in order to be a happy person, one should consider oneself __________. A. no better than others B. not the same as others C. as having something better than others D. as having better chances than others 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It is not easy to find true friends.Even if you've connected really know he is a true friend? And often you will find that someone who you thought you could trust may have let you down. 36 Generally speaking,a true friend is someone who will be there for you no matter what happens. 37 they will accept you for who you are without trying to change you, and they will be there to help you grow in new ways. 38 ,They will be honest and be someone you can depend on. They will listen and be someone you can talk things over with, even if they may not have advice to share with you. However, friendship is a two-way street. To find true friends and keep them, you must in turn be the same as well. 39 .Be someone your friends can depend on as well and offer them the same thing they give to you. A friendship will fall apart fast if only one person is giving and putting all the effort. If you are the only one making an effort,be honest and it works. Actually, there will be barriers(障碍)in the road but that is the test of true friendship. 40 Just as St Thomas Aquinas put it, “There is nothing on this earth more prized than friendship.” A. Don’t ignore the advice they give. B. A true friend will keep you secrets for you trust him. C. Be there for them in their hard times and share the good times with them. D. If it can survive those barriers, it will be stronger and better than ever E. There are ways you can know if a friends is true and how you can hold onto that friend. F.
