B Mary Wilkins Ellis was a volunteer pilot for Britain's Air Transport Auxiliary( ATA) during World War II. Mary Wilkins was born on Feb.2, 1917. When she was 8, her father bought her a ride in a plane. From there, she was hooked. As a teenager, she persuaded her father to pay for flying lessons, and she earned her pilot's license at 22 in 1939. In 1940,she heard an ad for volunteer pilots to help the war effort. She signed up and joined the ATA, whose task was to deliver planes from factory to base or from base to factory for repairs. At the height of World War II, 26-year-old Mary Wilkins climbed down a ladder from the cockpit (驾驶舱) of a bomber(轰炸机) at a Royal Air Force base in England. “Where's the pilot?” someone on the ground asked. “I am the pilot!” she responded. She had delivered the bomber alone-although built for a five-man crew-from its factory. People on the ground looked at her in surprise. One of them even decided to climb up the ladder to check the plane for the “missing” pilot. She was one of the “Atagirls”, as they were nicknamed, who almost always flew without other crew members, compass or radio assistance. They guided themselves by using maps and following rives or railway lines. While they did not fly in combat(战斗), they faced the daily danger of attack by enemy planes. Mrs. Ellis was once shot at over Bournemouth, in southern England, by “friendly fire” from the ground. Another time, she had a near-miss when landing in thick fog at the same time a combat Spitfire landed on the same runway from the opposite direction. That experience won her the nickname “the fog flyer” . In all, Mrs. Ellis flew more than 1,000 warplanes of 76 types-including 400 Spitfires-among more than 200 British airfields from 1942 to the end of the war in 1945. 24. What does the underlined word “hooked” mean in the second paragraph? A. Touched. B. Addicted. C. Annoyed. D. Confused. 25. Where did Mary Wilkins probably learn the ad for volunteer pilots? A. In a newspaper. B. In a magazine. C. On a poster. D. On the radio. 26. Why did one person on the ground climb up the ladder? A. He didn't believe women could fly these planes. B. He was interested in what a bomber looked like. C. He couldn't wait to experience a ride in a bomber. D. He wanted to check if the plane was in good condition. 27. What do we learn about “Atagirls”? A. They often flew in combat. B. They were often shot at by enemy. C. They often flew on their own. D. They guided themselves by radio when flying. C What I am writing is in English. You can read and understand because you are English language learners. But when you say people in England or the English people speak English, you would be wrong, or at least inaccurate in your remark. Ah yes, you might correct yourself, the Americans, Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders speak English too. That is true, but apart from that, what you really have in mind, or should say is people in Britain or the British speak English. The words England and English are perhaps the two most misused words in the English language. The English themselves一I beg your pardon, I am making the same mistake! The British themselves often say England and English when they really mean Britain and British. The Chinese words“英国”is even more misused than not because the term “不列颠” is hardly ever used. What's the difference, you may ask. To understand the question we have to know something about the history of the country and its people. Before there was a country there were the people. And before there were people, there was land. So let us start off from here and take the land first. We all know that Britain(though we often say England by force of habit) is an island country separated from the European continent by the English Channel. Actually there are two main islands. The larger one is called Britain, or Great Britain, and the smaller one is called Ireland, and these two, together with many small islands make up what is called the British Isles. The British is a geographical term. It is not the name of any country. At present it is made up of two countries, the larger of which is the one we very often inaccurately call England. The full official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but people call it Britain or Great Britain for that. It consists of England, Scotland, Wales and a small part(about one-sixth) of Ireland, then or the astern part. People still tend to call Britain England not only because England is the largest in area and the most populous but mostly because England is the strongest and also the most influential country in every respect before it absorbed the other three countries(The whole of Ireland was apart of the United Kingdom at one time) . Call it national chauvinism if you like, but people in England call Britain England out of habit rather than conscious sense of superiority, though it annoys the Welsh and especially the Scots who are proud of their separate national tradition. 28. According to the passage the correct order of the following terms is______. A. land, people, country B. land, country, people C. people, land, country D. country, people, land 29. The British Isles is made up of ______ A. one country B. two countries C. two and a half countries D. three countries 30. People call Britain England because of all of the following except ______ A. people in England do so out of habit. B. England is the nearest to the European continent. C. England is the largest in area and has the largest population. D. England is the strongest and also the most influential in every respect. 31.. The author wrote this article mainly to ______ A. explain the geographical state of Britain B. express his heartfelt affection for English C. explain a common misunderstanding many may share D. show the advantages of England over the other three countries D Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog’s life, describes a person who has an unhappy life. Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog. Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things. Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. But mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite. Dog expressions also are used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs. 32. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. Dogs in our daily lives B. Expressions with dogs C. The role dogs take in America D. Attitude of the American citizens to dogs 33. What does “dog-tired” describe in the passage? A. Describe a very successful person. B. Describe the dogs are very tired after a long walk. C. Describe a rainy and cloudy weather. D. Describe the heavy degree of exhaustion of people after long time work. 34. How are people compared to dogs in bad ways? A. By mean dogs and junkyard dogs. B. By lazy dogs and bad dogs. C. By sick dogs and tired dogs. D. None of them is right. 35. What can we learn from the text? A. Everyone can be successful if he learns from the old. B. It might be difficult for the young to learn new skills. C. Junkyard dogs are careful in money arrangement. D. Fierce persons aren’t so awful as their appearance sometimes. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 World Wildlife Day-- 3rd March 2020 Our planet is home to every lifeform we know. _____36_____ Humans are no different.
