One January afternoon, her grandfather Coy Jumper piled ten-year-old Cara and her sister, Claire, six, and Emma, five, into his Pontiac Sunfire and took them down to the pond. He and the girls walked happily through the pines, checking traps. No luck---they were empty. As the sun disappeared gradually toward the horizon, the group turned back to head home. But as Coy walked along the bank, he was suddenly unable to put one foot in front of the other. Then Cara saw Coy walk unsteadily and fall backward into the pond’s deep water. When her grandfather didn’t surface immediately, Cara jumped in. With one hand, Cara grabbed the bank. With the other, she reached for her grandfather, making contact in the dark water. Coy had suffered a stroke(中风) the year before. Now Cara wondered if he’d had one again. Just 80 pounds to her grandfather’s 230, she held his head and pulled his face out of the water. That woke him, but he was still dead weight. She managed to move Coy towards the three-foot bank and pulled him up onto solid ground. The winter sun had almost disappeared, and they were all trembling. Cara knew she’d have to get Coy to the car, a quarter mile away. She helped him to his feet. Coy slowly moved forward. Sixty feet from the car, Coy fell. From there, he crawled, dragging himself under a gate, to the car. His granddaughters helped him into the passenger’s side, and Cara got into the driver’s seat. “I used to sit on my dad’s lap and drive,” she says now. Coy, too, she says, had let the fifth grader drive through the fields around the house. Still, she felt nervous, but she pushed on the gas and steered(驾驶) them the three miles home. “I was trying to get there fast, but I didn’t want to get us hurt,” Cara says. When she pulled the Sunfire into the garage, her grandmother, Esca was there to meet them. Coy spent six days in the hospital recovering from a stroke. Says Esca, “If Cara hadn’t helped, she might not have a grandpa anymore.” 39.What happened when Coy and his granddaughters were heading home? A. Cara walked into traps by accident. B. Coy jumped into the water suddenly. C. Cara couldn’t walk upright. D. Coy suffered a stroke. 40.How did Cara, her grandfather and her sisters get home? A. She drove them home. B. Esca went to pick them up. C. Coy drove home with Cara’s help. D. Cara and her sister dragged Coy home. 41.Which words can best describe Cara? A. Honest and optimistic. B. Confident and generous. C. Brave and calm. D. Caring and sensitive. 42.What would be the best title for the text? A. Love Between Grandfather and Granddaughters B. Strength Beyond Her Years C. Help from the Families D. Still, she felt nervous, but she pushed on the gas and steered(驾驶) them the three miles home. “I was trying to get there fast, but I didn’t want to get us hurt,” Cara says. Unusual incidents are being reported across the Arctic. Inuit(因纽特人) families going off on snowmobiles to prepare their summer hunting camps have found themselves cut off from home by a sea of mud. There are also reports of sea ice breaking up earlier than usual, carrying seals beyond the reach of hunters. Climate change may still be a rather abstract idea to most of us, but in the Arctic it is already having great effects---if summertime ice continues to shrink at its present rate, the Arctic Ocean could soon become almost ice-free in summer. The knock- on effects(连锁反应) are likely to include more warming, cloudier skies, and higher sea levels. Scientists are increasingly eager to find out what’s going on in the Arctic. For the Inuit the problem is urgent. They live in unsteady balance with one of the environments on earth. Climate change, whatever its causes, is a direct danger to their way of life. Nobody knows the Arctic as well as the locals, which is why they are not content simply to stand back and let outside experts tell them what’s happening. In Canada, where the Inuit people are trying hard to guard their hard-won autonomy in the country’s newest land, Nunavut, they believe their best hope of survival in this changing environment lies in combining their ancestral knowledge with the best of modern science. This is a challenge in itself. The Canadian Arctic is a vast, treeless polar desert that’s covered with snow for most of the year. Adventure into this area and you get some idea of the hardships facing anyone who calls this home. Farming is out of the question and nature offers few pickings. Humans first settled in the Arctic a mere 4,500 years ago, surviving by taking advantage of sea first. The environment tested them to the limits: sometimes the settlers were successful; sometimes they failed and disappeared. But around a thousand years ago, one group appeared that was uniquely well adapted to deal with the Arctic environment. These Thule people moved in from Alaska, bringing dogs, iron tools and the like. They are the ancestors of today’s Inuit people. Life for the descendants(后代) of the Thule people is still tough. Nunavut is 1.9 million square kilometers of rock and ice, and a handful of islands around the North Pole. It’s currently home to 2,500 people, all but a handful of them Inuit. Over the past 40 years, most have abandoned their nomadic(游牧的) ways and settled in the area’s 28 isolated communities, but they still rely heavily on nature to provide food and clothing. Supplies available in local shops have to be flown into Nunavut on one of the most costly air networks in the world, or brought by supply ship during the few ice-free weeks of summer. It would cost a family around £7,000 a year to replace meat they obtained themselves through hunting with imported meat. Economic opportunities are few, and for many people state benefits are their only income. 43.The Inuit people believe the way to deal with the climate change problem is. A. to change their way of life B. to do as their ancestors C. To try to protect the environment from now on D. to use their ancestral knowledge and modern science 44.It can be concluded from Paragraph 3 that . A. the first settlers in the Arctic survive there quite easily B. it's hard to farm in the Arctic due to climate change C. the ancestors of the new people stood out among the settlers D. the Thule people from Alaska invented iron tools 45.What may be the main reason of Inuit's low income? A. Their nomadic ways of life B. Their conservative thought. C. The severe environment they live in. D. The natural disasters. 46.Which of the following is the best title for this text? A. Climate Change and the Inuit B. Climate Change around the Arctic C. Global Warming around the World D. The Inuit and Their Ancestors around the World 【答案】 43.D 44.C 45.C 46.A 【解析】 【分析】 本文讲述的是气候变化和因纽特人之间的关系。 根据第二段倒数第二句they believe their best hope of survival in this changing environment lies in combining their ancestral knowledge with the best of modern science. 根据第三段中around a thousand years ago, one group appeared that was uniquely well adapted to deal with the Arctic environment. These Thule people moved in from Alaska, bringing dogs, iron tools and the like. They are the ancestors of today’s Inuit people. The environment tested them to the limits: sometimes the settlers were successful; sometimes they failed and disappeared. For the Inuit the problem is urgent. They live in unsteady balance with one of the environments on earth. Climate change, whatever its causes, is a direct danger to their way of life. “Get your hands off me; I have been stolen,” the laptop, a portable computer, shouted. That is a new solution to laptop computer theft: a program that lets owners give their property a voice when it has been taken. The program allows users to display alerts on the missing computer’s screen and even to set a spoken message. Tracking software for stolen laptops has been on the market for some time, but this is thought to be the first that allows owners to give the thief a piece of their mind. Owners must report their laptop missing by logging on to a website, which sends a message to the model: a red and yellow “lost or stolen” banner pops up on its screen when it is started. Under the latest version of the software, users can also send a spoken message. The message can be set to reappear every 30 seconds, no matter how many times the thief closes it. “One customer sent a message saying, ‘You are being tracked. I am right at your door’, said Carrie Hafeman, chief executive of the company which produces the program, Retriever. In the latest version, people can add a spoken message. For example, the laptop’s speaker will say: “Help, this laptop is reported lost or stolen. If you are not my owner, please report me now.” The Retriever software package, which costs $29.95 but has a free trial period, has the functions of many security software programs. Owners can remotely switch to an alternative password if they fear that the thief has also got hold of the access details. If a thief accesses the Internet with the stolen laptop, Retriever will collect information on the Internet service provider in use, so that the police can be alerted to its location. Thousands of laptops are stolen every year from homes and offices, but with the use of laptops increasing, the number stolen while their owners are out and about has been rising sharply. Other security software allows users to erase data remotely or lock down the computer. 47.The expression “to give the thief a piece of mind” can be understood as“ ”. A. to give the thief an alert mind B. to express owners’ anger to the thief C. to remind the thief of his conscience D. to make the thief give up his mind 48.Different from other security software, Retriever can . A. record the stealing process B. help recognize the lost laptop C. lock down the computer remotely D. send a spoken message 49.One function of the program is that it allows the owner to at a distance. A. change some access details for switching on the laptop B. turn on the laptop by using the original password C. operate the laptop by means of an alternative password D. erase the information kept in the stolen laptop 50.Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage? A. With no Retriever, thousands of laptops are stolen every year. B. A new software provides a means to reduce laptop theft. C. Retriever has helped to find thieves and lost computers. D. A new program offers a communication platform with the thief. 【答案】 47.B 48.D 49.A 50.B 【解析】 【分析】 试题分析:本文介绍了一种新型电脑防盗软件,这种软件不仅能向窃贼发送文字和语音信息,还能跟踪、远程改变密码以及收集网络信息帮助警方发现电脑位置,以减少手提电脑的失窃事件。 47.B词义猜测题。由第一二段可知,这种新型软件的新功能是可以向手提电脑偷窃者发出语音信息,如:Get your hands off me, I have been stolen.这显然是表达电脑主人对窃贼的愤怒情绪的,故正确答案为B。其他同类软件具有向窃贼发出警告文字信息的功能,故A项和题干不能完全吻合,故选B。 48.D细节理解题。由第二段“The program allows users to display alerts (警报)on the missing computer’s screen and even to set a spoken message. 以及 but this is thought to be the first that allows owners to give the thief a piece of their mind.”可知这个软件和其他软件的不同点是它能发出又声音的讯息,故选D。 49.A细节理解题。由第六段“Owners can remotely switch to an alternative password if they fear that the thief has also got hold of the access details.”可知主人能够改掉一些登陆细节A项说法正确。B、C是对本句的误解。由第九段Other security software allows users to erase data remotely or lock down the computer. 51.What is the weather like? Chinese Summer Camp, which is intended for international students, is going to be held in our school this summer vacation. Since you're obsessed with Chinese culture, I’d like to invite you to join it. The camp is scheduled to last 11 days, from July 18th to July 28th. It covers a wide variety of cultural activities, ranging from studying Chinese daily expressions to attending some lectures on Chinese history and tradition culture.
