Nearly half the competitors in the 26.2-mile race will be women. But for most of the race’s 119-year history, only men were officially allowed to compete. A woman named Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb helped change that in 1966, when she secretly ran the marathon and finished ahead of most of the men. “Word went out around the world that a woman had done the impossible,” says Gibb. “It changed the way men thought about women.” Gibb saw her first Boston Marathon in 1964, while running through her neighborhood. She was inspired to run the race herself. For nearly two years, Gibb trained to build the energy and strength she’d need to finish. But when she sent in an application for the 1966 race, it was turned down. At the time, the longest official races for women were only 1.5 miles. Many people didn’t think women were physically capable of running longer distances. Running a marathon was also seen as “unladylike”. But the 23-year-old Gibb refused to let go of her dream. She came up with a plan to run the race anyway. On April 19, she showed up at the marathon wearing her brother’s shorts and a sweatshirt to hide the fact that she was a woman. Gibb hid in the bushes near the starting line. When the race began, she jumped into the pack. Shortly into the race, Gibb took off her sweatshirt. To her surprise, the crowd cheered when they realized she was a woman. Gibb finished the race in 3 hours and 21 minutes- faster than two thirds of the male runners. Gibb opened the door for future female long-distance runners. In the years that followed, she and other women ran in the Boston Marathon, even though the rules still prohibited women from running in the race. Finally, in 1972, the marathon was officially opened to women. 41.The underlined part in Paragraph 2 probably refers to the thoughts that women couldn’t _________. A. win a long-distance race B. take the place of men C. complete a marathon D. compete with men 42. What happened to Gibb when she was found running the 1966 Boston Marathon? A. She ran back to the starting line. B. She got support from the crowd. C. She was driven away from the race. D. She took off her brother’s sweatshirt. 43. Which of the following can best describe Gibb? A. Easy-going. B. Soft-hearted. C. Strong-willed. D. Open-minded. 44. What’s probably the best title for the text? A. Leading a new life B. Running into history C. Long-distance runners D. The world’s oldest race B After a year of examining many studies concerning whether homework is effective, NYC P.S. Elementary School decided that math worksheets and essay assignments were actually a waste of time. In February, Principal Jane Hsu sent a letter to parents stating that the Pre-K(学前班) through fifth grade students wouldn’t be give any traditional homework to encourage kids to free time for reading, playing outside, or doing activities they enjoy. “The negative effects of homework have been well established.” Hsu wrote in a note to parents.“They include, children’s frustration and exhaustion, lack of time for other activities and family time and, sadly for many, loss of interest in learning.” Some parents, however, disagree with the policy change, believing that a lack of focus will cause children to fall behind. Homework has been part of education from the beginning, and has increased in amount in recent years. Hsu’s advice that children should read and spend time with their families has upset some parents to the point of considering pulling their children out of the school. This group feels that homework gives children a goal to work toward. Others feel so strongly about the importance of homework that have they have begun giving their own homework to their children. An Australian Childhood Foundation survey finds that 71% of Australian parents feel they don’t spend enough quality time with their children mainly because of the time spent running the household or the time spent helping with homework Education experts in Australia are saying that parents should stop helping. Doing so will give kids more independence, give parents more free time, and help reduce the number of arguments caused by homework in the family. While some research suggests that homework has little academic benefit for elementary students, other researches show homework can help kids develop independence, and confidence. It can also contribute to a sense of belonging or control over their lives. When parents try to help their children with homework, the assistance can take away that feeling and can also make working parents more tired. 45.Cancelling traditional homework is aimed at________. A. allowing students to learn on their own. B. wishing students to spend more time with parents C. inspiring students to seek self-development. D. motivating students to help with homework 46.What can be concluded from the 1st and 2nd paragraph? A. Jane Hsu is the first principal to cancel homework. B. Jane Hsu has done much research on different aspects of homework. C. Jane Hsu pays little attention to students’ academic records. D. Jane Hsu knows students prefer activities to their subjects. 47.Why are some parents strongly against Principal Jane Hsu? A. They are afraid their kids will fall behind. B. They dislike their kids doing too many activities. C. They have no time to give their children homework. D. They don’t think the school is responsible for their kids. 48.What is the author’s attitude to parents’ helping kids with homework? A. Supportive B. Worried C. Unconcerned D. Negative C The following are some of the most impressive engineering/ construction achievements to date, taking into consideration the time when they were built and the knowledge and materials that were available to designers. White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad, Canada Built during the Klondike Gold Rush and financed largely by British investors, “ the railroad built on gold” was constructed in just 26 months, using 450 tons of explosives to explode a route through Canada’s coastal mountains. Passengers should hold on tight – the railroad climbs almost 278 meters in just 32 kilometers. Completion date: July 29, 1900. Burj Khalifa, Dubai, UAE The Burj Khalifa reaches a height of 828 meters and is both the tallest building in the world and the tallest free-standing structure in the world. Engineers faced many challenges, including the strong winds that batter the tower. Because of this, over 40 wind tunnel tests were conducted, not just to determine how the wind would affect the building but also to test the cranes used to construct it. Completion date: January 4, 2010. Trans-Siberian Railroad, Russia The Trans-Siberian Railroad connects Moscow and Eastern Russia with Japan, China and Mongolia. Northern Siberia isn’t the easiest landscape to cross, which is what makes the 8,851-kilometer Trans-Siberian railway so impressive. Engineers had to design a railway that was capable of operating in temperatures of minus 20 degrees Celsius. The railway travels through eight time zones, 87 towns and cities and crosses 16 major rivers. Some 90,000 people helped construct the railway, which took 10years to build. Completion date: 1904. 49.What can we learn about the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad? A. It is 278 kilometers long. B. It was started in about 1898. C. It was built on gold flatlands. D. It was financed by the local government. 50. The underlined word “batter” in the text can be replaced by “__________”. A. hit B. defend C. remove D. protect 51. Which of the following is TRUE about the Trans-Siberian Railroad? A. It was constructed in the early 20th century. B. It passes through some extreme areas. C. It was built by Russia, Japan and China. D. It is a railway in Eastern Russia. D In his book The Tipping Point Canadian author Malcolm Gladwell explains how a trend can take many forms. It can be a general change in social behavior, an idea or a fashion. However, why do some trends catch on and others not? What makes one particular brand of training shoe suddenly become the must-have product? How do people find out about trends and what makes people want to buy into them? Is it simply a question of keeping up with other people? In his new work, Gladwell explores the moment when something becomes common and how products, ideas, messages and forms of behavior spread. He looks at the reasons why trends are similar in the way they develop to outbreaks of disease, or medical epidemics(流行病) . Epidemics, like trends, start in a very small way, maybe from a single person with a virus, then spread very quickly until they take over the population and appear to be everywhere. Eventually, they will slow down gradually or die out suddenly. Gladwell shows how these changes happen not gradually but at one sudden moment. Gladwell identifies three types of people who are influential in the development of these kinds of social epidemics: Connectors are people in a community who have wide social circles. They know a lot of people and like to introduce people to each other. The people they know often come from a variety of social, cultural, professional and economic circles. Mavens are people with a lot of knowledge or experts in a particular field. They wish to pass on their knowledge to others. Mavens collect and gather information, so they are the first to pick up on new trends. Salesmen are people with charisma. They have a “soft” influence over people rather than actual power. This means they are influential because people want to imitate them. Overall, Gladwell’s book is a thought-provoking read for anyone interested in the origins of trends. What’s more, he writes in a clear style so even the most difficult ideas are easy to understand. 52. By mentioning the book The Tipping Point, the author intends to _____________. A. analyze the consequences of social epidemics B. introduce the topic and discuss the influentials’ function in spreading ideas C. exemplify people’s intuitive response to social epidemics D. describe the essential characteristics of the influentials 53. What do we know about Gladwell? A. He is a productive North American writer. B. He has written many books on the subject of trends. C. He thinks trends develop in the same way as illness. D. He believes there are three types of people in the world. 54. According to the text, Connectors____________. A. often follow others B. are very social persons C. are knowledgeable and experienced D. know many people from the same circle 55. What do we know from the text? A. Mavens quickly become aware of changes in fashions. B. Salesmen try to control other people using their power. C. Connectors and Mavens try to get their information across. D. This book is interesting but hard to understand for readers. 第二节:根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 5 crafts to keep the kids busy at Christmas The holiday season means major stress and lots of running around. 56 Here are some crafts to help keep the kids busy and amused while you finish what you have to do. ▲ Paper snowflakes.
