Snowy winter The snow in North China may last a whole day, breaking tree branches and blocking the road. In the South, the snowflakes fly and the world turns white. A saying goes that a timely snow promises a good harvest. As the snow covers the ground pests will be killed by the low temperature. Appreciating wintersweet (腊梅) Wintersweet usually blossoms(开花) in mid-to-late December in some southern cities of China. Wintersweet originated in China and is highly appreciated in Chinese culture for its toughness in severe winters. With pine and bamboo, it is referred to as one of the Three Friends of Winter. Eating porridge Warm porridge could help increase one’s personal heat and nourish the body in cold weather. In China, on the first day of Winter Solstice(冬至) there is a custom to eat red bean porridge and eight-treasure porridge on the eighty day of the last month of the lunar year, which is considered of much benefit to health. 21. Literature B Two weeks ago, a 7-year-old girl, Chloe Bridgewater wrote a letter to Google, expressing her interest in working for the tech company when she gets older. “Dear Google boss, my name is Chloe and when I am bigger I would like a job with Google,” she wrote. “I also want to work in a chocolate factory and do swimming in the Olympics.” The student said she liked computers and had a tablet she played games on. She even showed off a robot game that her dad gave her. It wasn’t long before Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, replied wit his own letter on Google website. In a letter dated Feb. 3, Pichai wrote, “Dear Chloe, I’m glad that you like computers and robots, and hope that you will continue to learn about technology. I think if you keep working hard and follow your dreams, you can accomplish everything you set your mind to. I look forward to receiving your job application when you are finished with school!” Her father, Andy Bridgewater told ABC News he was completely shocked that his daughter received a reply. But he wasn’t surprised that she decided to write the letter in the first place. “She’s got determination. She doesn’t see the barriers that we face every day,” he explained. “If she wants to do it, she will set out to do it and nothing will stop her.” The father remarked that his daughter began jumping up and down after receiving the letter. Still, he’s not in a rush to send his eldest daughter off to work. “Now, my daughter is confident, although she hasn’t yet fully understood that it will take more efforts than finishing her study to make it with Google,” he said. 25. Chloe’s letter to Pichai shows us that she ____________. A father forbids his girl to work for Google D. Google decides to employ its youngest clerk C You know that squeak(吱吱声) you hear from your pet mouse or the pest mouse? It turns out that it is not really a squeak, but a sweet song by male mice to attract females. This is the conclusion reached by biologist Dustin Penn and his team at the Veterinary University of Vienna. The scientists who have been conducting a series of studies on house mice for a number of years, began by recording the high-pitched(声调高的) sounds male mice made the moment they sensed a female mouse around. What they discovered when they played them back to females was that the ladies could tell between those made by their brothers and the ones made by unrelated males. Just like human, they tended to ignore the ones made by their brothers. The researchers then took the experiment one step further and analyzed the squeaks. To their surprise they discovered that while the squeaks sounded similar, they each had a different "tune". The biggest surprise of all was that the mice could even learn tunes from each other. However, not all scientists agree with this finding. Some like Kurt Hammer, a scientist at the German Primate Center believe that the test sample was too small to make such a conclusion. The researcher's next plan to test if the females care about the quality of the "song".In some bird species, males that can sing the most complex tunes seem to get the most attention. So why do we care whether mice can sing or not?Clearly, since they are being used as laboratory testers, it will help us make advances in human speech disorders like the ones found in people suffering from autism(自闭症). 28. According to Dustin Pen,the squeak made by a male mouse is ____________. A. a hungry signal B. a sad cry C. a terrible noise D. a pleasant sound 29. The underlined word "them" in Paragraph 2 refers to ____________. A. the male mice B. the female mice C. the squeaks made by the male mice D. the squeaks made by the female mice 30. What might be Kurt Hammer's idea? A. More studies should be made. B. Mice are intelligent animals. C. the conclusion is reasonable. D. Mice shouldn't be studied. 31. One benefit of the study on mice squeaks is that it can ____________. A. find ways to kill mice B. inspire musicians with their work C. help treat human speech disorders D. find ways to select intelligent mice. D A record 6.15 million trips were made by Chinese mainland tourists to overseas destinations during the seven-day Spring Festival holiday, which ended on Thursday, according to the China National Tourism Administration. That is an increase of 7 percent compared with last yearns Spring Festival. About 374,000 trips were organized by travel agencies, a 2.5 percent increase. The administration also reported growth from individual and high-end (高端的) travelers and said that in addition to top and coastal cities, inland cities---such as those in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region---became important source markets. With many Chinese now traveling abroad for Spring Festival, their choice of destinations has expanded along with their growing interest in foreign cultures and services. “Chinese tourists are increasingly willing to experience local culture and services, including staying in private homes, appreciating plants and watching monkeys in hot springs,” Li Xuejing, the agency’s marketing manager, said. A Chinese tourist surnamed Guo, who was vacationing on an island in the Philippines, said: “I now pay more attention to relaxation and enjoyment during the holidays instead of shopping or choosing gifts for relatives.” Another choice is Britain. Though the devaluation (货币贬值) of the pound is a factor, Britain’s rich history and famous education tradition have caught the eye of Chinese. 32. How many trips were made to foreign countries during the Golden Week of this Spring Festival holiday? A. 6,150,000. B. 2,500,000. C. 7,000,000. D. 374,000. 33. Relax and enjoy herself. B. Study foreign cultures. D. Chat with her relatives. 35. Where does the text probably come from? A. A guide book. B. A newspaper. C. A scientific magazine. D. The following three steps can help you start feeling more grateful, and appreciative of the good things in your life: Notice the Good Things in Your Life 36 Pay attention to the small everyday details of your life-nature, people, community, shelter, creature comforts like a warm bed or a good meal. And then start a gratitude journal. Making a commitment to writing down good things each day makes it more likely that we will notice good things as they happen. Enjoy the Feeling of Gratitude There are moments when you naturally, right then and there, feel filled with gratitude. These are moments when you say to yourself, "Oh, wow, this is amazing! "or "How great is this!"Pause. 37 Let it sink in . Enjoy your blessings in the moment they happen. Express Gratitude Expressing gratitude is more than being polite. 38 Show your appreciation to someone who really did something nice. Say: "It was really kind of you to…,” "You did me a big favor when...," or "Thank you for being there when...". 39 Hold the door open for the person behind you, even if it means waiting a little longer than you normally would. True gratitude doesn't leave you feeling like you owe other people something-after all, if you've done someone a favor, you probably don't want the person to feel like you expect something back in return. 40 A. It's about showing your heartfelt appreciation. B. Notice and absorb that feeling of true gratitude. C. You can also express gratitude by doing a kindness. D. It's all about feeling good and creating a cycle of good. E. Start to notice and identify the things you are grateful for. F. Help someone without letting the person find out it was you. G.
