Personally, Nike is my favorite one – it’s so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald’s, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites. Nike In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike’s logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $ 35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995. McDonald’s The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the arch shaped(拱形的) signs on the side of the company’s then walk-up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonald’s name was added to the logo in 1968. Apple There are different stories behind Apple’s logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn’t stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff’s “rainbow apple”, a rainbow-colored silhouette(轮廓) of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow-colored apple was replaced by the one-colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far. Mercedes Benz The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three-pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach’s elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz & Cie and DMG in 1926. Adidas The Adidas logo, which was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. The logo was used for the first time in 1967. 51. What does the author think of the stories of the great logos? A. They are boring. B. They are attractive C. They are out of date. D. They are practical. 52. What does Nike’s logo stand for? A. The wing of the Greek goddess. B. The source of inspiration for soldiers. C. The statue of the Greek goddess. D. The goddess of victory 53. We can learn that Apple’s present logo is ______. A. the religious story of Adam and Eve B. a bitten apple with only one color C. Newton’s sitting under an apple tree D. the rainbow-colored bitten apple 54. ______ stands for the rule of the land, the sea and the air. A. Nike’s logo B. Apple’s logo C. The Mercedes logo D. The Adidas logo 55. Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos? A. Mercedes Benz –McDonald’s – Nike – Apple B. Nike – McDonald’s – Apple – Mercedes Benz C. McDonald’s – Apple – Nike – Mercedes Benz D. Nike – Mercedes Benz – McDonald’s – Apple B Every day, in all kinds of weather, thousands of men and women jog. Why has jogging-running slowly for long distances become so popular? Most joggers begin because they hear it is a very good exercise. Jogging makes the heart stronger and helps people lose weight. It can also help them feel better about themselves. Donald Robbins, who is forty-two years old and works in an office, began jogging a few years ago because he felt he was too fat. At first he could only run about 100 yards. It took him three months to be able to run a mile. But two years later, he ran in a marathon race over twenty-six miles. Many joggers, like Donald Robbins, feel that if they can succeed in jogging, they can succeed at other things also, and quite often this feeling helps them at their jobs. Should you jog too? If you do, be sure to ask your doctor for advice. Jogging may be too much exercise for you. Does jogging cost much? No, it costs almost nothing. But it is very important to have a good pair of shoes that are made especially for jogging. They protect your feet and legs from the shock of running on hard surface. How fast should you go? Jog with a friend and talk to each other as you run. If you have difficulty in talking, you’re going too fast. How far should you jog? Remember not to go too far too soon. In fact, you should walk, not run, the first few times. Then do some short jogs, but no more than what you can do comfortably. After that, increase your distance a quarter or half mile every two weeks or so. Maybe in a few years, you can run in a marathon too. Thousands of people do. 56. The article is mainly about_______. A. jogging as a sport B. jogging as an exercise C. jogging in a safe way D. jogging as a way to marathon. 57. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Many people think that jogging is a set of one’s will power(毅力). B. Jogging should be done in the early morning C. Jogging is time-spending. D. You should not talk while jogging. 58. Which piece of advice is NOT mentioned in the article? A. Have a good pair of shoes. B. Have a sports suit. C. Remember not to go too far too soon at the beginning. D. Ask your doctor for advice. 59. Why is jogging so popular according to the passage? A. It doesn’t cost much. B. One can start jogging at any time and in any place. C. One can talk with one’s friend while jogging. D. It is a very good exercise. 60. The author doesn’t think that everybody is fit for jogging. Which paragraph deals with it? A. Para.1. B. Para.2. C. Para.3. D. Para.4. C What are the biggest problems that society will have to deal with in the new age? There are diseases like AIDS and cancer. There’s climate change, of course. And what about producing enough cheap food and energy for the world’s growing population? Who’s going to solve all these terrible problems? Yes, politicians and world leaders will have a big part to play. Yes, businesses will need to create the economic wealth to pay for some of these things. But who’s going to make a much greater difference to something like AIDS or climate change? It’s going to be a scientist. It is the scientist who can turn some new bit of science into a new technology to solve these problems. If you like thinking about the world around you, why not become a scientist? It doesn’t mean you have to wear a white coat and plastic glasses and spend all your time in a lab as most people often imagine! Scientists do all kinds of amazing things that are actually interesting! Military scientists develop not only new weapons but new military technologies that could help make wars out of date. Forensic(法医的) scientists work with the police to find quite small clues to catch criminals. Scientists work in schools and colleges as the teachers and professors who will train tomorrow’s scientists. Don’t think a scientist is far away! Maybe you like cooking? You could be a food technologist helping to keep fruit and vegetables fresher for longer. Perhaps sport is your thing? Do you know that most top athletes work with sports scientists in order to improve their performance? You could even be the science writer who gets to spend the life studying the latest advances and sharing them with the world. Looking for something to do for the rest of your life? My advice? Take a long and hard look at science. It is interesting and ever. 61. Many problems are mentioned in the first paragraph to ____. A. suggest they are impossible to be solved B. introduce the causes of these problems C. show the writer’s worry about the future world D. show scientists play an important part in solving them 62. Here are some wise lessons that I wish I knew when I was younger: Don’t wait until tomorrow. Enjoy every moment of today, because you are not guaranteed a tomorrow. Don’t put off your dreams. Don’t wait to do. If it’s important to you, then do it today. Pay attention to what is happening now, to the people around you, to the task at hand and to all of the choices you make today. It’s called work for a reason. Success at anything takes work. When you hear about an overnight success story, don’t forget about all of the work that came before. You may have to do work you do not enjoy before you get success. Keep going. Don’t burn your bridges. You never know when a former boss, colleague, business partner or acquaintance may come in handy. Try to part on good terms, stay on good terms and never gossip(说长道短)about former connections. A wide pool of friends, coworkers and connections of all kinds will provide a wealthy resource of ideas and support as you go forward in life. It’s not a race. You have so much to do and it feels as though you have to be in a hurry to get there. But in fact, you do not have to do it all at once. If you try to do it all at once, you will at best not have time to enjoy it and at worst burn out and damage your health and relationships. Slow down and take one thing at a time, one day at a time. Look for the good in everything. Stay positive. Look for the good in people. Celebrate the happy moments. Give helpful encouragement rather than negative criticism. If you view the world around you and life’s challenges through goodness, then you will find life much more enjoyable. 66. What’s the author’s attitude towards success? As far as I am concerned, we should ride to and from school. Firstly, riding a bicycle to and from school is very common among the students, for buying or repairing a bicycle doesn’t cost a lot. Next, parking a bicycle is easy and convenient in our school, no matter how busy the traffic could be. Actually, bicycle-riding is also a practical way to do exercise and protect the environment. What you should do carefully is just to keep an appropriate speed while riding and lock it after you are off it. In this way, you feel it simple and relaxing to ride a bicycle. Don’t hesitate, everybody. Let’s ride to school. Li Jin From Class 1 Grade 1查看更多
