As a little girl, I collected dog toys. At 5 years old, I was ready and willing to run away with the family dog after the threat of giving him away when he chewed up the sofa. Luckily he stayed and my affection for man's best friend continued. As an adult, my reasons for wanting to adopt a dog were purely selfish. I wanted a companion. I wanted a young, energetic dog that would need long walks or runs to help keep me active to stick to an exercise routine. ‎ Little did I know that my four-legged friend and love for dogs would help me feel more at home in and fall in love with my Shanghai community. It seemed to me that being a tall blonde didn't already attract a lot of curious stares; add a 12-kilogram black dog that believes everyone is his best friend to the picture and locals seem even more intrigued. The decision to adopt Xiao Hei definitely fulfilled those early selfish desires, but the experience has also brought me closer to my neighbors and made me feel more at home,.‎ A few months after I first brought Xiao Hei home, I spotted the group of elderly Chinese people who gather at the park. After realizing they go there most weeknights, I decided it would be a good way to help Xiao Hei socialize with other dogs. After a few visits, it was not only an opportunity for him to play but also a chance for me to practice my Chinese. "Most Chinese give their dogs English names, but you've given him a Chinese name. Very interesting," they laughed. With that simple laugh, it seemed that barriers were broken and with each visit I felt more a part of the community.‎ ‎21. The author once left home with her dog.‎ ‎ B. The author gets along well with her neighbors.‎ ‎ C. The author is good at the Chinese language.‎ ‎ D. The author will settle in Shanghai forever.‎ B In 1863, the great novelist Jules Verne wrote a novel called Paris in the Twentieth Century. In the book he used the full power of his great ability to forecast the coming century. Unfortunately, the manuscript (手稿) was lost until his great-grandson happened to discover it lying in a safe where it had been carefully locked away for almost 130 years. Realizing what a treasure he had found, he arranged to have it published (出版) in 1994, and it became a bestseller at once. ‎ Back in 1863, kings still ruled the ancient world in Europe, with so many poor people performing backbreaking work in the fields. And steam power was just beginning to change the world. But Verne predicted that Paris in 1960 would have glass skyscrapers, air conditioning, TV, elevators, high-speed trains, gas-powered vehicles, and even something similar to the Internet. Verne described life in modern Paris almost without any mistakes. ‎ Just two years later Verne made another amazing prediction. He wrote From the Earth to the Moon, in which he predicted the details of the task that sent several astronauts (宇航员) to the moon more than 100 years later in 1969. He correctly predicted the size of the space capsule, the number of astronauts who would carry out the task, the length of time the journey would take, the weightlessness that the astronauts would experience, and the final landing in the ocean.‎ How was Jules Verne able to predict 100 years into the future successfully? Although he was not a scientist himself, Verne often turned to scientists, asking them questions about their opinions of the future. ‎ He collected a vast amount of information about the great scientific discoveries of his time. Verne realized that science would make it possible for many amazing things to appear in the future. The secret of his successful prediction was his belief in the power of science to change society. ‎ ‎25. Paris in the Twentieth Century is a novel that _____.‎ A. people thought little of at first B. took Jules Verne five years to finish C. didn’t sell well when published at first D. was published long after it was finished ‎26. The third paragraph is mainly about _____.‎ A. the requirements of being an astronaut B. what From the Earth to the Moon is about C. how From the Earth to the Moon was created D. the differences between the earth and the moon ‎27. According to the text, Jules Verne _____. ‎ A. showed strong interest in writing and science B. could predict what would happen to someone C. was well-known as both a novelist and a scientist D. had Paris in the Twentieth Century published in 1994‎ ‎28. What would be the best title for the text?‎ A. The early life of Jules Verne B. Jules Verne’s opinions about science C. Jules Verne: A writer ahead of his time D. Jules Verne’s inventions came true C Is cursive writing (草写体) an out-of-date skill in today’s technological society? The new education standards for English do not require cursive. However, schools are still allowed to teach cursive if they choose. Some schools are considering giving up cursive, since it is not on standardized tests. This topic is now being discussed in teacher lunchrooms around the country. We invited some inspired teachers to weigh in. Here’s what one of them, Eldra Avery, has to say. ‎ I failed a handwriting assignment in eighth grade, but my teacher told me that I was well able to have that type of handwriting. So I improved my handwriting and now have beautiful cursive handwriting. I teach English, and at times I ask my students to do assignments in cursive. Since they will be taking timed writing exams throughout their educational career, it is necessary that they practice writing at a speed that will allow them to finish their task. When you have three letters connected in a word, it flows, and when you lift your pen only at the end of a word, it is faster than printing (印刷体), which lifts the pen at the completion of each letter. ‎ Handwriting is a reflection (反映) of our humanity. We dream of a future with more advanced technology and less labor, but truthfully, if technology prevents us from using skills that are essentially human, I wonder if that can be called “progress.” Cursive connects us to our past and our future. If students can’t write cursive, they can’t read cursive. And if they can’t read cursive, how can they read historical papers like the Declaration of Independence? ‎ Writing cursive is a process that helps improve language learning. Copying text by hand does a lot of good to students. My students complete a poetry analysis paper each year. Many of them tell me that they couldn’t begin to understand their poem until they copied it by hand. Handwriting is a valuable communication tool. Communication through handwriting will always be a necessity. To imagine that the whole world communicates by typing would be a rather poor view. ‎ ‎29. According to Paragraph 1, teachers are discussing _____. ‎ A. whether cursive should be taught B. whether students should read cursive C. how to look at handwriting assignments D. how to improve students’ cursive writing ‎30. Why does Ms. Avery mention her students in the last paragraph? ‎ A. To show the positive side of handwriting.‎ B. To introduce an effective learning method.‎ C. To show the importance of copying poems.‎ D. To share her first-hand teaching experience.‎ ‎31. Ms. Avery would probably agree that _____.‎ A. handwriting should be replaced by typing B. there should be fewer standardized tests C. cursive is more effective than printing D. cursive helps us learn about the future D Post Login Register Support Sourcing assistant needed Posted On: Sunday, 28 March, 2010, 17:27‎ Expires On: Monday, 27 September, 2010, 17:27‎ Indian company’s Shanghai office is now looking for a local Chinese girl, who can speak fluent English, and has at least one year experience in trading business. Here are a few tips for memorizing the poem.‎ ‎☆ The first step is to start learning it. Begin by reading the poem line by line at least five times.  36  If you find some word which you do not know, look it up in the dictionary. ‎ ‎☆  37  That’s because the lyrics have a tune (曲调) to them. Though you do not have to set the poem to a tune, reading it more than once will help you in understanding its rhythm (韵律). Here, you will also understand the areas where you have to pause and the exact pronunciation.‎ ‎☆ Then close the book and try to recall the poem.  38  However, you do not have to worry if you are not able to recall anything.‎ ‎☆ The next step is the actual memorization process (过程). Break the poem into several parts and then repeat each one of them line by line. After you do this many times, try to recite the line without looking into the book.  39  ‎ ‎☆ Once you have memorized the poem, keep on practicing till you are able to recite the poem fluently.  40  ‎ Memorizing a poem is not at all difficult if you put your mind and heart into it.‎ A. Let the words of the poem do the work.‎ B. Most of us find it easy to memorize a song.‎ C. A poem will live or die depending on how it is read.‎ D. Try to understand each and every word of the poem.‎ E. Repeat this process till you can repeat the whole poem by heart.‎ F. You may remember some words, lines, or may be nothing at all.‎ G. Practicing in front of your family, friends, or teacher can also be helpful.‎ 第三部分:语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ I hadn’t even wanted the dog in the first place!
