While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him. He just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said,“Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It is the least I could do. Please, I insist.” Jimmy agreed. Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. To be exact, thoughts of the future have kept me up countless nights and made me worry enough to do poorly on more than one test. Because of this, words of wisdom are a source of comfort. Steve Jobs gave a speech to Stanford’s graduating class in 2005 and his words resound repeatedly in my mind whenever I think about my future. It wasn’t always like that, though. It started when I became a junior, when college came into view. It’s the first big step to making your life your own. So when Jobs discussed his life as a student, some fears were eased. He, too, felt the need to attend college to make something of himself. He faced what many are extremely afraid of: uncertainty. His lack of understanding caused him to stop attending college and focus on what he felt was important. His story had a happy ending, of course, since he certainly turned out well. This doesn’t mean that students shouldn’t attend college, but rather that they shouldn’t worry so much. You’ll get where you need to go, even if your path is a bit more winding(蜿蜒的)than you’d like. Jobs talked about the hardships in his work. His love of his work helped him carry on and he got where he was meant to be, which restates the point: don’t panic. One particular part of his speech stayed with me. Steve Jobs quoted(引用)the saying “Stay hungry, stay foolish” and it has become my motto. Staying foolish is realizing that you are still a fool, no matter how much you’ve learned or experienced. There is always more to explore. Staying hungry is wanting to find those things about which you are still uneducated. Steve Jobs’s level of success is attainable, and I aim to prove that. With the will power to go into the world living every day like it’s my last and allowing the future to take care of itself, I will do great things. In the last moments of my life, I’ll be proud of what I have done and hope to have all the wisdom a person could wish for. 41. The author felt worried when _________. A. he had to take tests at school B. he thought about his future C. he had lots of sleepless nights D. he searched for words of wisdom 42. It is suggested in Paragraphs 1 and 2 that _________. A. Steve Jobs didn’t attend college B. Steve Jobs failed because of his decision C. the author is a college student D. the author cares much about his future 43. What did the author gain from Jobs’s speech? A. Courage to drop out of school. B. Confidence in defeating Jobs. C. Interest in computer industry. D. Bravery to face uncertainties. 44. What did NOT Steve Jobs encourage students to do in his speech? A. Have the desire to learn more. B. Be content with what they know. C. Stay calm in the face of hardships. D. Be modest so as to learn more. 45. The passage is mainly about _________. A. the wisdom drawn from a speech B. the most impressive quotation in life C. a memorable meeting with Jobs D. an experience of a speech C In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people. I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied (依赖) on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit ( 追求) of success , the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten . However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try. “What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition. 46. What does this passage mainly talk about? A. Competition helps to set up self-respect. B. Opinions about competition are different among people C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development. D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition 47. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage? A. It pushes society forward. B. It builds up a sense of duty. C. It improves personal abilities. D. It encourages individual efforts. 48. The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means . A. those who try their best to win B. those who value competition most highly C. those who are against competition most strongly D. those who rely on others most for success 49. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”? A. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others’. B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts. C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills. D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried. 50. Which point of view may the author agree to? A. Every effort should be paid back. B. Competition should be encouraged. C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter. D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition. D At sixteen Ron Mackie might have stayed at school, but the future called to him excitedly. "Get out of the classroom into a job," it said, and Ron obeyed. His father, supporting the decision, found a place for him in a supermarket. "You're lucky, Ron," he said. "For every boy with a job these days, there's a dozen without salary. " So Ron joined the working world at twenty pounds a week. For a year he spent his days filling shelves with tins of food. By the end of that time he was looking back on his school days as a time of great variety and satisfaction. He searched for an interest in his work, with little success. One fine day, instead of going to work, Ron got a lift on a train going south. With nine pounds in his pocket, a full heart and a great longing for the sea, he set out to make a better way for himself. That evening, in Bournemouth, he had a sandwich and a drink in a coffee house managed by an elderly man and his wife. Before he had finished the sandwich, the woman had taken him on for the rest of the summer, at twenty pounds a week, a room upstairs and three meals a day. The ease and speed of it rather took Ron's breath away. At quiet sea Ron had to check the old man's account in the records of the business. At the end of the season, he stayed on the coast. He was again surprised how straightforward it was for a boy of seventeen to make a living. He worked in shops mostly, but once he took a job in a hotel for three weeks. Later in October he was taken on by the sick manager of a shoe shop. Ron soon found himself in charge there; he was the only one who could keep the books. 51. Why did Ron Mackie leave school at sixteen? A. He was made to leave by his father. B. He had reached the age when he had to leave. C. He was worried about the future. D. He wanted to start work. 52. What did Ron's father think about his leaving school? A. He thought his son was doing the right thing. B. He didn’t know whether it was right to do that. C. He did not like the idea, but he helped Ron to find work. D. He knew there was a job for every boy who wanted one. 53. It took about a year for Ron to realize that_____. A. he worked well because he was interested in the job B. his work at the supermarket was dull C. being at work was much better than going to school D. the store manager wanted to fire him 54.
